WARNING: Pregnant/lactating women and children and infants should not take Amanita muscaria.
Amanita muscaria, a medicinal mushroom otherwise known as fly agaric, is well-known for its mind-altering effects. But, beyond this, Amanita is also an important and powerful medicine for the treatment of chronic pain, digestive problems, hormone imbalances, and much, much more.
When I first encountered Amanita muscaria as a therapeutic medicine, I was (to be honest) scared of it. This mushroom has an exaggerated reputation and I’d heard a lot about it that was bad, so I was hesitant about working with it and I started with an extremely low dose. The more that I’ve worked with fly agaric though, the less scared I became, but I’ve also gained more respect for Amanita as the potent and unique sacred medicine that it is. This is NOT a mushroom to play with – indeed, many people use fly agaric flippantly in the same way that they’d use psilocybin flippantly (neither mushroom should be used flippantly), but fly agaric is a MUCH different medicine than psilocybin. But while I talk about how fly agaric mushrooms have a bad reputation, this isn’t a medicine to be scared of – rather, it’s a medicine to be respected and learned about because it can do so many amazing things.

Before working with Amanita for real, I recommend that you read this first section of this book, and the last section about dosing, so that you have a working knowledge of how this mushroom medicine works. I also recommend that you read the chapter(s) focused on the way that this mushroom works to treat trauma and spiritual problems, since a lot of the “negative” experiences that people have with this mushroom come largely as a result of having unresolved trauma. Working with other sacred medicines, like psilocybin, Ayahuasca, or others, in addition to or before using Amanita muscaria, can help promote a positive experience with fly agaric.Like the other sacred medicines, it’s important to remember that Amanita muscaria works on all levels – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. The mushroom contains a healing plant spirit that has lessons to teach and things that it specializes in to produce healing effect – however, the physical mushroom also contains physical compounds that work on the physical layer of disease. Technically, all plant medicines work in this way, but some medicines, like Amanita muscaria, are really powerful in the sense that they work on all levels to treat all of the different aspects of a particular health problem. Chances are, if you’re reading this book, you’re willing to peel away at the layers of your health problems in order to resolve them in a permanent and enduring way.

If you are investigating Amanita muscaria as a medicine that will treat or cure a particular disease, take time first to learn how to use it properly. Also take some time to learn more about trauma and how trauma (including emotional trauma) can produce physical disease and chronic pain conditions.Shaman in tribal cultures have used Amanita muscaria to learn more about the bridge between life and death. Indeed, medicine is a practice in all cultures that negotiates with and sometimes (in non-conventional models of medicine) helps with navigating the crossroads between life and death. In developed nations, life and death are regarded as very black-and-white states of existence, but Amanita can teach us about the gray-areas. Medicine, as a practice, is administered within the gray-areas between life and death to negotiate with death (usually) and to bring back our own vital energies if they’re willing to return and if we’re willing to accept them back. Amanita is a sacred medicine that helps us understand life-and-death through a different lens when it is administered at higher doses. As a microdose though, Amanita can help us get rid of symptoms of disease and remove toxins such as organophosphates. It makes sense, given its profile of medicinal effects while Amanita inspired Santa’s red and white coat and hat as the icon of gift-giving. This is a simple medicine with a lot of gifts. If you know how to work with Amanita muscaria for healing, all kinds of miracles are possible.
