The Budwig smoothie is a fundamental piece of any healing protocol. Fats and oils, after all, are meant to be electrical in the body.
Healthy fats and oils do transmit electricity. This is important because each cell in our body must be able to use electricity to send signals and messages to other cells in the body. But without plenty of healthy oils in the diet, cells shut down, they become depressed, and they stop communicating with other cells. If a lot of our cells get sick and depressed, our bodies begin to feel sick and depressed. But what constitutes a “healthy oil”?
Healthy Oils vs. Unhealthy Oils
Healthy oils are oils that have not been heated or exposed to a lot of light. Healthy oils are usually not packaged in plastic as the food oils can degrade the petroleum oils that are used to make the plastic leading to an intermingling of the two. Oils that are packaged in plastic should thus be avoided. And oils that are packaged in transparent materials should also be avoided. Choose oils that are cold-pressed and that are packaged in darkly colored bottles that are made of glass. And then, when you use these oils in the diet, do not heat them. Consume these cold-pressed, unheated oils in their pure form to rebuild your cellular membranes and to make sure that your baby has plenty of healthy fatty acids to build its brain and body too.Fats / Oils and Proteins
Dr. Budwig developed her smoothie recipe to optimize the body’s ability to digest fats / oils and proteins. Fats and proteins are extremely important during pregnancy. Fats and oils contain the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K1 and K2. Proteins contain the essential amino acids that our body and our baby’s body needs to be able to produce every structure, every enzyme, and every neurotransmitter and hormone that will make the body work properly. The B vitamins and vitamin C are present in many fruits that can be added to the smoothie. Raw honey contains a wealth of health-promoting nutrients. All that’s left are minerals which can be obtained by drinking sea water supplements or humic / fulvic acid added to drinking water. Below we talk a bit about sunlight and sea water exposure as a valuable way to naturally treat liver disease during pregnancy, but drinking sea water supplements or taking a shilajit supplement provides the body with a wealth of trace minerals too.Many of the most serious health issues that occur during pregnancy start from congestion in the liver and gallbladder. And congestion in the liver and gallbladder is always intimately tied to fat consumption and digestion. The consumption of heated oils or fried foods, for example, can cause pregnant women a lot of grief through the production of bile sludge. Bile sludge or gallstones (another consequence of eating fried foods and heated oils) can, in turn, clog up the common bile duct that connects the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas in 91% of women. If the common bile duct becomes partially clogged, pancreatic enzymes may get backed up into the pancreas, causing the beta cells in the islets of Langerhans to become damaged. This can then cause gestational diabetes. Damage to the beta cells is something that can be repaired, despite the fact that doctors claim otherwise, using herbal medicines like Melissa officinalis or Passiflora incarnata. Nonetheless, unhealthy fats can have significantly negative effects on the health of pregnant women and often, women have no idea that heated oils are causing a lot of their grief and discomfort.

The Budwig Smoothie Basics
Ingredients:
- High lignan flaxseed Oil
- Cottage cheese or quark with 2% fat content or less / Queso Fresco in France OR Ricotta cheese
- Low fat, organic milk (ideally goat’s milk or sheep’s milk)
- Raw honey
Tools:
- Electric Blender
- Coffee Grinder
How to Prepare the Budwig Smoothie:
- Put 2 tablespoons of low fat milk with 3 tablespoons of linseed oil in an electric bledner.
- Blend this mixture until it is smooth and fully incorporated. Do not skip this step. Do not go on to the next step until this step has been completed.
- Add 1 teaspoon of raw honey to the mixture
- Mix all ingredients again until they are fully incorporated.
- Slowly add 6 tablespoons of low-fat quark / cottage cheese/ or Ricotta cheese. Add 2 tablespoons at a time and keep mixing until the ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Pour the mixture into a bowl and add fruit such as blueberries, raspberries, bananas, or mangos.
- Eat the smoothie while sitting in the sun.
Why You Should Eat the Budwig Smoothie in the Sun
You’ll prepare the Budwig smoothie and consume it immediately while it’s still fresh. Ideally, you should eat the smoothie while sitting in the sun to ensure that your body produces plenty of natural vitamin D and fumaric acid. Sunlight causes the body to produce natural, healthy endorphins, which are roughly equivalent to natural opiates. During pregnancy, these natural endorphins that are produced as a result of sunlight exposure work as natural pain killers. During pregnancy, it’s hard to find safe pain killers that work reliably so tuck this fact about sunlight and endorphins into your back pocket. Sunlight exposure during pregnancy also helps the body tune back into the natural rhythms of nature which is essential to prevent serious problems like preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and gestational diabetes. Though we’ve been taught to avoid sunlight, in reality, sun exposure gives our body a natural way to cope with pain. Sunlight heals the liver and the gallbladder. And our bodies use sunlight to produce fumaric acid, a substance that’s necessary in order for the body to go through the Kreb’s cycle, one of the most important energy-production cycles in the body.
DO NOT WEAR SUNSCREEN DURING PREGNANCY.
If you are suffering from a major illness and you suddenly become pregnant, consider taking a vacation in a beachy location at the ocean to spend time sunbathing with exposure to the alkaline water of the ocean. Choose a location that’s not especially polluted, of course, and start with an hour of sun per day, working up by an hour daily. For example, if you have a treatment resistant kidney infection during pregnancy, you might consider getting some sunlight and seawater to open up the liver and detoxify the body through the liver and through the skin to take the load off your kidneys. Sunlight exposure may help you treat pain from a kidney infection naturally during pregnancy as well. And both sunlight and seawater have a general antibiotic impact on the body through some interesting pathways that are beyond the scope of this discussion.
The reason why I suggest sunlight and seawater exposure to cure liver disease during pregnancy is because as the kidneys increase in size to accommodate the need for increased detoxification, the liver and gallbladder often get clogged up in response to the increase in hormone levels and diet changes. Women suffer greatly as a result of the liver and gallbladder issues. The kidneys get bogged down with the extra work of detoxifying a body that’s building another body. And though the liver is normally responsible for much of the detoxification of the body, pregnancy presents special obstacles to detoxification. As a pregnant woman, if you become ill, medications must be dosed so as not to overtax the liver. The liver must be cleansed and blockages removed in order for a pregnant woman to feel healthy again. The full body detoxification of sunlight and seawater exposure is hard to mimic safely in a spa setting during pregnancy. Detoxifying the liver is often the key to taking the load off kidneys that are often at the crux of diseases like preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, and gestational diabetes. Drinking the Budwig smoothie in the sunlight with as much skin exposed as possible is, at least, a start, in terms of sunlight exposure to heal liver and gallbladder issues that are hijacking blood sugar levels, pancreatic function, and kidney function.
How to Use the Budwig Smoothie During Pregnancy
Drink the Budwig Smoothie up to 3 times per day, if possible. Halve the quantity of ingredients to make a smaller batch if your stomach is too upset to consume a larger amount. Other Nutritional Guidelines to Follow in Order to Heal from Major Illness During Pregnancy
Avoid all heated oils if you’ve been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, kidney infection, or any other serious disease during pregnancy. Drink Budwig smoothies throughout the day with fresh fruit and raw honey and steam vegetables to consume for meals.
Most pregnant women throughout the world today are severely deficient in both molecular iodine (which feeds the thyroid gland) and potassium iodide (which feeds the reproductive organs). My own personal experience with recurrent miscarriages was due to a combination of iodine deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency. In order for iodine to work properly in a woman’s body during pregnancy, it’s vital that she begin by taking the supportive nutrients listed below for 5 days BEFORE beginning to work with Lugol’s iodine. After the first 5 days of treatment with the supportive nutrients, you’ll continue to take these nutrients, but also you’ll start administering the Lugol’s iodine. Start slowly with just 1 drop of Lugol’s iodine 2%. Administer 1 drop for up to 4 days before increasing the dose by another drop. Continue to increase the dose up to a total of at least 50 mg / 20 drops, but note that some women need up to 100 mg of Lugol’s iodine per day, especially during pregnancy. Continue to take Lugol’s iodine indefinitely. It is one of the most important nutrients you’ll need in order to produce healthy breast milk. Children who receive plenty of iodine are a lot healthier, happier, and they’re more intelligent that children who don’t receive iodine during pregnancy and the initial stages of growth.
