N-Acetyl-Cysteine Use During Pregnancy



N-Acetyl-Cysteine, also known as NAC has been used in a number of contexts involving women’s health. This over-the-counter supplement has been used with great success to improve fertility in women who are having trouble becoming pregnant. It has also been used to naturally treat unexplained recurrent miscarriage in women who have trouble carrying their pregnancy beyond 20 weeks. NAC has been shown to protect babies from intra-amniotic infections and it has been used successfully as a treatment by women who are experiencing postpartum depression, NAC can significantly and naturally improve mood. If you’re pregnant, it pays to have NAC in your medicine cabinet, but this supplement can also be taken throughout pregnancy to prevent COVID or infection with a cold or the flu. It can be used as a natural home remedy for headaches during pregnancy as well. NAC has beneficial health effects for both mother and infant.

Though NAC has been studied scientifically in great detail, L-Cysteine is an alternative to NAC that works just as well and that may even be more beneficial in terms of improving health during pregnancy. Both NAC and L-Cysteine provide a source of sulfur to the body and both also promote the production of glutathione, the body’s most important detoxifying substance. NAC is a bit more familiar to the general public, but technically NAC is synthetically derived from L-Cysteine. As such, L-Cysteine would be the preferred supplement to use during pregnancy unless you are the type of person who prefers to follow the scientific literature in a dogmatic way. NAC is something that was produced by Big Pharma, which is why it has been studied so extensively. L-Cysteine, the natural amino acid that our body uses to detoxify and fight infection, has not been scientifically funded for research to the same extent, though it likely functions even better than NAC in treating the various health issues that we talk about below.  

Nonetheless, it’s up to you to decide whether you prefer to use NAC or L-Cysteine during pregnancy. Both are safe and both produce valuable medicinal effects during pregnancy.

NAC: Unexplained Recurrent Miscarriage Natural Treatment

Scientific studies have shown that N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) can be used as a natural treatment for unexplained recurrent miscarriage. One study, which was performed at the Women’s Health Centre at Assiut University in Egypt involved one group of 80 women with a history of unexplained recurrent miscarriage who were given a combination of 600 mg of NAC plus 500 mcg of folic acid daily. These women were compared to a group of 86 women who were given just 500 mcg of folic acid daily without NAC. The NAC + folic acid group of women had a significantly increased success rate at carrying their pregnancies beyond 20 weeks. And the combination of NAC + folic acid in the group of 80 women also significantly increased the number of live births in comparison with the group of women who were given only folic acid.

NAC as a Natural Treatment for Infection and Inflammation of the Amniotic Sac or Fluids During Pregnancy

Infection or inflammation in the amniotic sac or fluids that surround a fetus can lead to preterm delivery with a higher than average risk of complications for the baby. Researchers at the University of Illinois and Yale have found that NAC can be used to cure intraamiotic infection as well as intraamniotic inflammation during pregnancy. This is a treatment that doctors may not think to use for prevention of intraamniotic infection or inflammation, but you can safely use it at home by taking 600 mg daily. 

In a study published by the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 68 women were diagnosed with intraamniotic infection or intraamniotic inflammation. These women were separated randomly into two groups. One group received NAC for 10 weeks prior to preterm delivery. The other group received a placebo. The women who were given NAC had significantly fewer negative outcomes than women who did not receive the NAC. In total only 12% of women who were given NAC had negative outcomes as a result of the intraamniotic infection or inflammation in comparison with 32% of women who did not receive NAC treatments. 

One of the benefits of NAC during pregnancy is the fact that it is a safe medicine that doesn’t increase the risk of sepsis or other health issues in infants.

NAC: COVID During Pregnancy Home Remedies

N-acetylcysteine or NAC has been used successfully as a safe treatment for COVID during pregnancy. NAC works as a treatment for COVID via its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulating characteristics. It can be taken both to prevent COVID infection naturally during pregnancy as well as to treat COVID naturally during pregnancy. 

COVID infection often involves copious mucus secretion and the formation of a hyaline membrane that can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. In pregnancy, acute respiratory distress syndrome and mucus secretion can be harder to treat and to prevent using conventional medicine because many COVID treatments are toxic to the fetus. But NAC is an exception. NAC is safe for both mother and infant and indeed, it can be taken throughout pregnancy to prevent COVID and other health problems. 

NAC is an over-the-counter supplement that supplies the body with the precursor ingredients to produce glutathione, the body’s primary detoxifying agent. So this supplement helps to remove toxins that can buildup in the body to worsen COVID and other health issues that involve the detoxification process. The multi-organ injuries caused by COVID are associated with a cytokine storm that can be mitigated to some extent by NAC. NAC decreases TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-17 during a cytokine storm which might explain why this supplement is so useful as a home remedy for COVID during pregnancy. In addition to its ability to reduce the impact of a cytokine storm, NAC also improves the flow of mucus to relieve bronchitis and improve breathing during COVID. And finally, NAC has an antiviral effect that makes it ideal as a home remedy for COVID during pregnancy. 

Note that if you are using Chlorine Dioxide Solution as a COVID cure during pregnancy, that NAC can cancel out the effects of Chlorine Dioxide Solution. NAC for Respiratory Infection During Pregnancy

If you catch a cold or the flu during pregnancy, NAC can be used not only to treat respiratory infection, but also makes it easier to breathe when the sinuses or bronchial tubes get blocked. NAC thins mucus which makes the mucus flow more easily out of infected sinuses. In a respiratory infection, thin, flowing mucus is a key to getting rid of infection. Mucus in the human body, after all, was designed to grab onto and carry infectious pathogens out of the body. When mucus clogs the sinuses and stops flowing, pathogens get trapped in the body. NAC keeps that mucus flowing smoothing, which means that it can naturally unblock sinuses and bronchial tubes during pregnancy without harming the growing fetus. 

As a natural treatment for respiratory infection during pregnancy, NAC is comparable to guaifenesin (an over-the-counter drug) in terms of its ability to unclog sinuses and get rid of chest congestion. But NAC isn’t toxic the way that guaifenesin is toxic to the body. Indeed, NAC is not only safe for use during pregnancy, it can actually protect the growing baby during pregnancy. NAC: Natural Treatment for Sinus Infection During Pregnancy

NAC has the following relevant health effects on the body that can help you safely treat a sinus infection during pregnancy:

  • It is anti-inflammatory. NAC can reduce inflammation in the sinuses to make it easier for the immune system to naturally overcome a sinus infection during pregnancy. 
  • It is antiviral. NAC can kill pathogens living in the sinuses without harming the fetus or causing health issues in the mother.
  • It is mucolytic. In other words, NAC thins mucus to allow the sinuses to clear naturally during pregnancy.

NAC, vitamin E, and vitamin C: Headache Treatment During Pregnancy

Headaches during pregnancy are common and many women try to avoid taking drugs like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and aspirin while gestating. One study showed that the combination of NAC, vitamin E, and vitamin C were able to reduce brain inflammation and oxidative stress to prevent migraine during pregnancy and also treat pregnancy headaches.

Study participants included adults who experienced 2 to 8 migraines each month. Participants who received the NAC, vitamin E, and vitamin C treatment experienced, on average, 3 fewer migraine headaches per month as a result of treatment. The length of the migraine headaches was also reduced in those where given the NAC, vitamin E, and vitamin C treatments. NAC: Detoxification During Pregnancy

NAC is transformed into glutathione, the primary substance that our bodies use to remove toxins. Glutathione cannot be taken orally as a supplement because it breaks down too easily in the stomach before achieving the target tasks in the body. Though there are glutathione products on the market, there are a number of studies showing that these products aren’t able to achieve the same level of detoxification as NAC or L-Cysteine. And because NAC has been studied in terms of effectiveness at safely treating pregnancy-related health issues affecting both mother and infant, we also recommend the use of NAC for detoxification following exposure to pathogens, toxic mold, toxic chemicals, or toxic drugs. 

NAC, after all, has been used as an antidote against poisoning in emergency settings. It has particularly been used as an antidote against acetaminophen poisoning and amatoxin-containing mushroom poisoning.

NAC: Natural Depression Treatment During Pregnancy

As a detoxifying agent, NAC is able to reduce symptoms of depression safely during pregnancy. It works by removing ammonia-based toxins that irritate brain tissues. Through this mechanism of action, NAC is able to reduce the frequency and strength of toxic, nagging thoughts that can plague pregnant women with depression. 

NAC or L-Cysteine can be used as a natural home remedy for depression during pregnancy along with L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan, other amino acids that promote the production of dopamine and serotonin in the body. These amino acids are naturally present in foods like meats and milks, but some women need to supplement with L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan to ensure that they get enough of these aminos to build plenty of the necessary neurotransmitters that prevent depression. Taking L-tyrosine with L-tryptophan and a B-100 supplement (take 1 pill daily), magnesium glycinate (480-600 mg per day), zinc/copper (15 mg / 2 mg), vitamin D3/K2 (125 mcg / 90 mcg), and 50 mg of Lugol’s iodine 2% daily (20 drops on the skin or in drinking water) is recommended for best results.

NAC: Natural Anxiety Treatment During Pregnancy

Women who experience anxiety during pregnancy should consider taking NAC. NAC: Natural Treatment for Postpartum Depression

Some of our clients with postpartum depression have had success combining NAC with an over-the-counter pharmaceutical known as “Methylene Blue”. Methylene Blue should not be taken during pregnancy and you should also avoid Methylene Blue if you’re trying to conceive. But, if you’ve recently given birth and you’re looking for a natural treatment for postpartum depression, consider combining NAC with Methylene Blue. 

Note that you should not take Methylene Blue if you are already taking a prescription anti-depressant medication. Wait for at least 2 weeks after taking the last dose of a prescription antidepressant before beginning to take Methylene Blue. Methylene Blue is a powerful MAOI that is available over-the-counter. 

Note, however, that while Methylene Blue should be avoided during pregnancy and prior to conception, NAC improves fertility levels and it can be taken throughout pregnancy and during lactation. NAC promotes general detoxification of the body. In terms of mental health, NAC has been shown to reduce the frequency and strength of negative, nagging thoughts. It can be used to treat obsessive and compulsive behaviors, but it also helps reduce feelings of panic and anxiety. When used in combination with Methylene Blue, the effects of both NAC and Methylene Blue synergize.
