The Cowden Protocol: Herbs for Lyme Disease
Uncaria tomentosa and Otoba parvifolia are often used together as an herbal remedy for Lyme disease.The Cowden Protocol for Lyme disease was developed by Dr. William Lee Cowden. It can be used by people who are in early, middle, or late stages of the disease. It is also used for other chronic states of disease.
Dr. Cowden markets 14 different Nutramedix brand products. The product, “Microbial Defense” contains two herbs, Banderol and Samento, that have the ability to eliminate all of the forms of Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria (cysts, biofilms, spirochetes). Banderol and Samento have shown greater effectiveness than doxycycline at killing Lyme cysts and disrupting biofilms.
The Cowden protocol has a 70-80% effectiveness at treating Lyme disease. About 90% of patients show improvements in their blood parameters after laboratory tests.

How to Do the Cowden Protocol as an Herbal Remedy for Lyme Disease
While doing the Cowden protocol, you should endeavor to drink 2-3 liters of water daily as an adult. Children should drink a proportionally appropriate amount of water while doing the protocol. Stress reduction and relaxation is also important. Dr. Cowden requested that his patients sleep from at least 11 PM to 6 AM in the morning – getting plenty of rest is essential for good results from this protocol.While doing the Cowden protocol, it’s important that the diet contains fresh, organic, raw vegetables and fruits. The diet should exclude sugar, processed foods, products containing wheat and gluten, dairy products, and refined oils.
Products including activated carbon, bentonite clay, and cholestyramine / Questran should be taken only if absolutely necessary, such as when a Herxheimer reaction occurs.

Cowden Protocol Components
Banderol Microbial Defense for Lyme Disease
The Banderol Microbial Defense product is one of the most important components of the Cowden protocol. This product offers a broad spectrum of activity against parasites, fungi, bacteria, and viruses, but it also has anti-inflammatory effects.Microbial Defense is non-toxic and it not only reduces symptoms of Lyme disease, but it also works to kill the Lyme bacteria, strengthen the immune system, and get rid of Lyme co-infections (Bartonella, Chlamydia, Babesia, Mycoplasma, Rickettsia including both Coxiella and Erlichia, or Cytomegalovirus). The herb in this product doesn’t cause intestinal dysbiosis and it is safe to use.
Banderol Microbial Defense contains Otoba parvifolia extract which is an herb that has been combined with Uncaria tomentosa / Cat’s Claw extract in different protocols as a powerful herbal remedy for Lyme disease. Uncaria tomentosa is another Lyme herbal remedy from the Amazon. Practitioners who work with Otoba parvifolia have an 85-90% success rate overcoming Lyme disease symptoms using these two herbs specifically. Banderol does not include the herb, cat’s claw / Uncaria tomentosa, but the combination of these two herbs is enough to help some patients overcome Lyme disease symptoms by itself. Rather, the Otoba parvifolia / Banderol extract is used in combination with the list of other herbs below.
