Pimpinella anisum Essential Oil for Genital Infections During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, scientists have demostrated that the use of Pimpinella anisum essential oil can be indispensable in the treatment of genital infections. Pimpinella anisum is able to:- Increase the overall effectiveness of treatment
- Improve the ecology of the vagina
- Normalize the activity of the Kallikrein Kinin System (KKS) enzymes to reduce the incidence of premature births by 2.6 times
- Prevent prenatal rupture of membranes by 8 times
- Reduce the frequency of inflammatory complications that occur in the postpartum period by 2.9 times
- Reduce the frequency with which a genital infection reoccurs by 4.5 times
In one study, scientists administered standard treatment to a group of pregnant women which included antibacterial medication and probiotics. In the same study, another group of pregnant women received the same antibacterial medication and probiotics followed by the use of Pimpinella anisum essential oil intravaginally for 4 days. The women in the second group who received the anise essential oil following standard treatment were less likely to have an infection that persisted and they were also less likely to have a normalization of the bacterial ecology in the vagina. The scientists noted that this was one reason why Pimpinella anisum essential oil should be used during pregnancy to treat vulvar or vaginal infections because a normalization of the vaginal bacterial flora at the time of delivery is important. Pregnant patients did not experience allergic reactions or adverse effects.
Vulvar or vaginal infections that commonly develop in pregnant women that can be treated with Pimpinella anisum essential oil include:
- Vaginosis
- Vulvovaginal candidiasis / Yeast Infection
- Aerobic vaginitis
- Combinations of any of the above
In the studies noted above, the Pimpinella anisum essential oil was administered with a carrier oil, in this case sunflower oil at a ratio of 100 mL of sunflower oil with 0.5 mL Pimpinella anisum essential oil.
