Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Traditional Chinese Medicine

PREFACE: This is one of the main articles that I've written about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It was originally written as a chapter in a book about neurological diseases, but because it represents a personal experience with becoming very sick and then getting well again, the article is multi-faceted. I won't apologize for the narrative, the dream content, or our methods. Our methods work for Lydi and me and most of our readers end up here at AlivenHealthy.com in this day-and-age of AI-generated crap (that's the right word for it), because they have completely given up hope in conventional medicine. For me and for Lydian, the illness that we'll discuss below and the solutions to the problems that we encountered with this illness challenged us a lot (it was very scary), but we learned (through our sacred medicine work) in a very definitive way that for as long as we continued to be apologetic or...in-the-service-of science that we would be stuck in a state of serious debilitation and frankly, one of us might die. This was a foreboding message to get on a mushroom trip. The warning was, "Learn Traditional Chinese Medicine / TCM or else". We weren't sick at the time of the trip yet and as it turned out, we didn't have to "learn TCM"...we needed TCM to understand HBOT and a general concept for healing that was always eluding us when we were stitching together scientific research as frankenstein-like explanations for healing disease.
For many years, Lydi and I have found the bulk of the data about healing diseases, particularly the afflictions that we've had to solve within our own family, through dreams or through the sacred medicines. We had to search inside of ourselves to find ways to heal our family members. Some of the dream content is directly relevant for readers. Some of it is nuanced and specific for our family only. Neither Lydi or I were born with this faculty. We developed it out of necessity because it wasn't possible to find answers to questions about serious health problems through an Internet search or by asking a doctor or any health practitioner how to solve our issues.
I feel like the dream-content may alienate some of our readers, but as AI looms more and more over the Internet, it seems like its time to reveal this fact. Lydi and I find our information through dreams and then we have "substantiated it" using scientific research. But the scientific research is slowly being watered down in a very bad way. The literature is even less trustworthy than it was before AI become a big thing. So the article below about HBOT and TCM provides just a few vital nodal points from our dreams out of many notebooks of notes taken in the dark of night about ways to heal ourselves. Many of the dreams were like one-word notes slipped to us by Guides (sometimes in a foreign language that we don't know). In the morning, we wake and we research what was given to us. Often, Lydi and I have dreams that support each other. Regularly, we are blown away by the material. We don't claim to know the solutions to problems for everyone. But this is how we find solutions to problems for our own family members -- the ones who wish to know about them, that is. And we counsel our readers to never trust our material fully, but rather, to use it as a template of how normal people can find ways to heal themselves using fairly simple and accessible medicines and treatments. Love heals and families can use what exists in nature for healing and apply some love and Intention to the problem to find answers inside of themselves that may not be possible to find by searching outside of themselves. Wisdom about healing the body comes from the ancestors...our family lineage and it is often very specific to a particular patient, but if you arrived here, it's likely that an ancestor who was once a healer themselves is looking over your shoulder, trying to get you to really pay attention to certain parts of this article that pertain to you or your loved one.

There is a theory that all dementia is vascular dementia. In other words, this theory says that all types of dementia and movement disorders (which could, in theory, also include schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders / ASD and certain other types of mental or cognitive illness) involve a lack of oxygen to the brain and nervous system. In this section, I’m mostly focused on nervous system disorders, but hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) works to treat a large array of health problems when properly applied. HBOT is a tightly controlled, corporate industry so be aware of this as you explore HBOT chambers or HBOT clinics. There is a tremendous amount of research that’s gone into proving that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a valuable treatment modality for many health issues, but this information is not easy to find on the Internet because corporate information has infected the field with sales information instead.
The Cunningham Sanitarium was a giant spherical HBOT hospital that was built in Cleveland, OH in 1928. The whole facility was pressurized. But unfortunately, Orval J. Cunningham believed that cancer was caused by an infection (a mycobacterium that has been observed by many doctors and scientists over the past century as the underlying cause of cancer). His project ran into “financial difficulties” similar to many of the other cancer cures that were discovered at that time. Our book series The Cancer Cure Catalog discusses how each of the various cancer cures have been covered up throughout history, how the cures work, etc. if you wish to know more about this topic. In any case, Cunningham’s HBOT hospital was disassembled within a very short period of time and the idea of a pressurized hospital was lost to history.

If you’re new to this type of treatment, HBOT is all about air pressure. Air pressure, in turn, is something that varies with altitude. Gamow bags (which are basically just airtight bags that are big enough for a human to crawl into) are used by climbers at very high altitudes to save lives if altitude sickness grips them at a time when a 1000 foot descent is not possible (a big snow storm, for example). Gamow bags produce very mild hyperbaric conditions using a handpump to increase pressure around the person’s body. The increase in air pressure around the body as a whole, in turn, translates into an increase in the “partial pressure” of oxygen that facilitates the movement of oxygen from the lungs to the blood supply and from the blood supply to the tissues. Too little air pressure at high altitudes makes it hard for oxygen to successfully move through the endothelial junctions of the blood vessels to feed oxygen-starved tissues.
Water pressure is also relevant to a discussion of HBOT. Indeed HBOT was originally developed to treat scuba divers who had gone into the high-pressure environment underwater for long periods of time. Water, especially deep water, exerts more pressure on the body than air and when divers are underwater for lengthy periods of time breathing air that contains nitrogen in addition to oxygen can lead to “the bends” (also known as “decompression sickness”). The nitrogen can easily get forced through the endothelial junctions of blood vessels and build up in tissues to cause bruising, and painful symptoms associated with the “bends”.
To understand the importance of nitrogen, it might be helpful for readers to understand that when a person pops their knuckles, they’re creating localized negative pressure that moves nitrogen out of the joint tissues creating a “pop”. The “pop” is nitrogen that’s escaping from the joint into other tissues. Within 20 minutes or so, the nitrogen moves back into the joints.
Chiropractic often involves this same type of “pop” that involves nitrogen that builds up in tissues. In some cases, the “pop” moves nitrogen and the nitrogen can escape from the body as a whole through the lungs, but sometimes the nitrogen simply moves back into joint tissues to cause the same problems that existed before the chiropractic session. Chiropractic has a higher-than-usual risk of causing strokes perhaps in part because of the problem of nitrogen that is improperly dealt with using this system of medicine. My father had a stroke immediately following a chiropractic appointment though at the time, I did not realize that nitrogen may have played a role in this health event.
Air pressure and water pressure is not something that I had thoroughly considered or worked with until I was in a position of great need myself. And I wouldn’t have been compelled to look closely at HBOT if I had not been compelled to study the 5 shu points in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in depth as a result of a prior illness that didn’t fully resolve in my granddaughter. Both Lydi’s and my family got sick one autumn and, because we live at high altitude (8700 feet), our recovery stalled. We don’t get sick often, but this sickness lingered. Lydi and I know about many things, but we were at a loss to get our family back on their feet. We couldn’t get our energy back because, once anemia develops at high altitude, recovery requires descent to a lower altitude. I did not know this. Lydi did not know this. I’d never encountered this information, but as I studied the 5 shu points that sit between the fingers and elbows and also the toes and the knees, I noted that these points represent the movement of water / qi down a mountain, following a stream of water that pools in flattened areas (they are named for these water-flowing, water-pooling qualities of qi at each point). At the elbows and knees, the life force, qi, courses deep into the sea of the body.
Once the air-pressure issue came up on my radar, I suddenly realized that some of the most persistent, major illnesses that I’d experienced in my life happened after I moved to a much high altitude from a much lower altitude.
On the basis of this thought about the 5 shu points, I remembered hyperbaric oxygen therapy and its ability to mimic sea level or even below-sea-level states of air pressure in order to promote better oxygen absorption and release throughout the body. HBOT and the 5 shu points were oddly connected in my mind at first. I didn’t understand the connection, honestly. It was presented to me in a dream and I had to flesh out the idea by checking in with the logic and what’s known in the scientific literature about oxygen and air pressure.
HBOT is like a whole-body (versus oral, topical, or enema-based) blast-administration of chlorine dioxide solution or hydrogen peroxide that can kill pathogens located in areas that might normally be hard to treat. It administers reactive oxygen species medicines that can kill pathogens while simultaneously releasing molecular oxygen that feeds tissues with life-saving gases that are absolutely necessary in order for tissues to survive and thrive. Pressurized oxygen therapy can be used to kill pathogens that cause gangrene even though gangrene and necrotizing fasciitis is often “oxygen loving”. The higher pressure creates a different dynamic with pathogens such that they become vulnerable to reactive oxygen species that would not otherwise be able to treat them.

When we got sick, we became anemic. In fact, I would say that the anemia developed first and the illness developed after we were very low on blood, oxygen, and energy. Around this time, we had to go to Spain and we were blessed to end up accidentally at sea level there. Getting into an airplane was lucky for us. We didn’t know that the plane might be medicinal (long flights rarely feel medicinal). Airplanes are pressurized environments. Though travel across time zones was hard on our bodies, when we took up residence at sea level, we were healing finally. At that time, I did not know that sea level would be like getting into a hyperbaric chamber at about 1.1-1.3 ATA at the altitude where we normally live. I didn’t know we were healing from the anemia that had afflicted us for months at that point. Later, when we looked back at my husband’s SmartWatch (he never checked in on his oxygen levels – it wasn’t until 3 months after we’d returned home from Spain that he felt compelled to look for this data), we could see how we’d been starved for oxygen (most days we were below 89% oxygen according to the watch oximeter) and then, we went to Spain, and we had days toward the end of our 3 months stay when our blood oxygen levels were up to 99% again.
When we returned home from Spain, we felt like new. Three months is often the amount of time it takes to get back to close-to-normal levels of red blood cells following severe anemia. Six months is what’s required for a full recovery. But we decided then, without realizing that sea level had healed our anemia, to change to a ketogenic diet because Maya, Lydian’s then 2 year old daughter, was such a finicky eater. Lydi was concerned about her. Maya often gravitated toward keto-foods and she’d had hand, foot, and mouth disease the year before which can lead to diabetes later down the road if the underlying, colonizing infection goes untreated. Keto made sense. When we all switched to keto, we went through the usual metabolic acidosis stage and bam! We inflicted another round of anemia on ourselves inadvertently without having fully recovered from the first bout. But this time, I was laid out on the couch. I stared at the wall. I couldn’t walk very far without losing my breath.
All of us had this problem, so I wasn’t alone, but the fact that my granddaughter lacked energy and focus was a major concern. I could barely think and barely move. I could barely worry…which worried me. I didn’t want for us to go to a doctor because I knew from experience that the doctor would scare us off any kind of healing path and I felt strongly, I hoped, that we were being guided toward some important discoveries. I didn’t want my baby granddaughter to be exposed to other illnesses at the doctor’s office where we were unlikely to receive real help (I no longer believe in conventional medicine except in very obvious emergencies). I usually couldn’t sleep and I wasn’t dreaming, but I had recently worked with some psilocybin mushrooms on a trip (before becoming anemic) and I came back knowing that I needed to study TCM for some reason. I had luckily, already done my intensive study of those 25 shu points on the body and as I lay inert on the couch, ill, I realized that those points represented the movement of water down a mountain. I started looking more closely at hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the first time in my life as I recognized that the shu points might actually represent changes in air pressure and the effects of air pressure on qi, the life force (oxygen and oxygenation might be regarded as being related to qi). John and I started researching hyperbaric therapy together. We contacted a number of companies in Mexico that offer the therapy, but no one contacted us back. So we turned to the idea of buying our own chamber.
At this point, we became privy to the controversy around mild vs. high hyperbaric oxygen therapy which has to do with the amount of air pressure (in absolute atmospheres or ATAs) along with the percentage of oxygen being administered during a session. The material around mild vs. high hyperbaric therapy was not extremely clear or believable.
Let me tell you why.
John and I found a mild hyperbaric oxygen chamber that we were able to get to our address within 5 days of ordering it. This was an absolute miracle in Mexico and we were very grateful for this. In the 5 days leading up to its arrival though, we decided to pile into our van (all of us) and go down the mountain to the lowest altitude we could arrive at within 90 minutes of our home. As it turned out, this path followed a river down the hill. Of course it did. The rivers and lakes that existed on this path were similar to the metaphorical representation of the shu points. The water naturally traveled most quickly down the most precipitous path. We drove past numerous lakes, following a river the whole way.
On that first day as we wound down the mountain, I felt so irritable and angry at everything that got in our way on the road. I recognized the irrationality of how I felt about the drive, but I was at a loss to control it. John said he felt the same way. I was too tired to be able to stop my own anger. It was easy to kindle it and the anger persisted.
Within 90 minutes of our home, we were able to go down more than 2000 feet in altitude. This was enough to make it possible for our bodies to re-oxygenate and also spur the kidneys to begin producing erythropoiein, the bone-marrow triggering substance that causes the body to produce more red blood cells. When we went down the mountain to a lower altitude, we were “loading” with oxygen and reactive oxygen species in the bloodstream at that higher air pressure. When we went back home, all of the oxygen and reactive oxygen species were then released into our tissues. And at the same time, our Nebraskan and Myanmar kidneys were now triggered to begin producing red blood cells again.
This was a very mild hyperbaric oxygen treatment. By the second day, I was noticeably less irritable on the trip down the mountain. I could predict where we had to get to on our drive in order for me to begin feeling better. After five days of this very mild hyperbaric drive, I could tell that something positive was happening. Indeed, my body was making more blood again. There was hope.
Maya is high-altitude Mexican. She was born here, but if you live at high altitude, but your ancestors for tens of thousands of years are not from a high altitude, the body does not know how to breathe properly or how to manage the low air pressure when the body becomes anemic. So she was struggling along with her plains-parents and grandparents. Even a few thousand years of an ancestral lineage that lives at high altitude is not enough. Tens of thousands of years are required in order for people to be fully adapted to high altitude living such that they can recover from something like anemia at very high altitudes without treatment or without “going down the mountain”.
We felt the effects of this extremely mild “hyperbaric therapy” after the first day. By day two, I was far less irritable and angry on our way down the mountain. I felt clearer. I honestly couldn’t believe it. It was a such a simple idea. I’d been in a state of hypoxia for so long at that point that I was flabbergasted that a mild altitude change could be medicinal. For 5 days before the arrival of our HBOT chamber, we went down the mountain and back up again. Amazingly, this made a difference for us.
At one point, I woke up in the morning with a dream featuring the Dead Sea and I remembered at that point that the Dead Sea is located below sea level. We’ve been to the Dead Sea and I’ve written about the Dead Sea treatment centers that are particularly famous in the west for their ability to cure psoriasis and fibromyalgia. The Dead Sea contains an exceptionally high level of mineral salts that are healing, but I believe now that one of the other most important healing benefits of the Dead Sea has to do with the altitude and the additional air pressure that would force the mineral salts into the blood and cells.
Psoriasis, for example, appears to be a disease of the skin, but actually, it is a digestive system disease that likely involves a colonizing pathogen that lives in the liver and other solar-plexus organs. The model of TCM that acknowledges things like kidney yin and yang deficiency can help explain why, for some psoriasis patients, kidney dialysis is required to cure their disease (if the patient is working exclusively with conventional medicine). The kidneys and kidney yin and yang deficiencies have featured heavily in my dreams, which returned shortly after we started going up and down the mountain and then doing HBOT therapy. At first, I couldn’t see the relationship between kidney yin deficiency, in particular, and HBOT therapy. Now, I see that HBOT is a very efficient and beneficial kidney yin deficiency treatment.
Before we started going up and down the mountain and doing very mild (1.5 ATA) HBOT treatments, I was mentally unable to write or work. I couldn’t think and my reasoning abilities were beginning to fail me. I felt “foggy”. It was almost a literal experience of fogginess where I felt as though normally, when my mind had fog in it that I could still reach out into the fog to find things with my felt sense. But that was gone. The fog was impenetrable. I could see how my symptoms were causing me problems with my work, but I didn’t believe that I could actually have dementia. Now, I can say with confidence that yes, poor oxygenation can make people seem mentally or cognitively deficient. I had all the symptoms of early dementia, but in fact I was functionally anemic.
Functional anemia (too few red blood cells) can coexist, in theory, with polycythemia vera or erythrocytosis (too many red blood cells), but only if you look at these health issues through the lens of TCM. In TCM, erythrocytosis might be regarded as “blood stasis” where some of the red blood cells are trapped in a sort of “eddy” in some area of the body. These are mostly deoxygenated red blood cells and there may be too many of them in that area of the body creating the appearance that the body has too many red blood cells overall.
Blood-letting throughout history developed in part to resolve this problem of too many red blood cells. In conventional medicine, blood-letting is known as “phlebotomy therapy”.
Though some conventional medicine experts (HBOT doctors, etc.) say that HBOT therapy is not appropriate for someone with erythrocytosis (and they might be right…they also might be wrong), I would argue that the TCM treatments for erythrocytosis are essential: lumbrokinase, nattokinase, and delayed release serrapeptase (taken on an empty stomach with 1 hour on either side of taking these supplements). An eddy of blood stasis in the body needs to be thinned down using safe medicines that can thin the blood, break down biofilm, and release the painful blockages where blood has pooled. As the red blood cells are released into circulation, anemia can be relieved, but also erythrocytosis in some cases depending on the patients other underlying issues.
The goal is to have enough red blood cells to fill out plenty of blood vessels feeding the body. Having plenty of blood vessels allows a person to lose some red blood cells to infection or injury. The body can close down any of the non-essential blood vessels to keep the volume of blood at a satisfactory level while the body tries to restore blood-volume-balance. If you have too many red blood cells (polycythemia vera, for example) then the question would be why? What is triggering the carotid body in the sinus of the common carotid artery to send the wrong signals to the body about how many red blood cells must be produced? Rather than succumbing to a life-sentence with erythrocytosis, which can produce dementia and confusion that looks similar to the dementia and confusion produced by anemia, this question might help restore hope in a cure.

In TCM, the kidneys and the bone marrow are directly related to the brain and its Sea of Marrow (which is viewed in TCM as the jelly-like material below the cerebral cortex). One of the requirements for successful HBOT treatment is the body’s ability to equalize the ears. Even newborn babies can do this, but ear equalization was a bit of a concern for John during his initial sessions because he’d had to have his eardrum replaced about 12 years ago (he didn’t end up having any ear issues in the HBOT chamber though). In TCM, the ears are also related to the kidneys (ears and kidneys even look similar). When an embryo is developing in the womb, the kidney fascia buds or “blooms” into what later becomes the ears, establishing the permanent relationship between ears and kidneys. The kidneys, like the ears, respond to changes in air pressure. While the ears “pop” when we yawn in an HBOT chamber, the kidneys produce erythropoietin to alert the bones to produce more red blood cells if more red blood cells are needed (there are feedback loops to prevent the body from producing too many red blood cells most of the time). Over the course of time, HBOT also spurs the body to produce more blood vessels in an effort to produce a more efficient and adaptive system by which the tissues may be oxygenated.
The body becomes a body that is failing to adapt to a particular air pressure and it turns into a body that can open and close blood vessels to ensure that there is plenty of blood and oxygen for tissues throughout the body, even when air pressure gets lower and oxygen becomes more scarce.
If a person becomes functionally anemic as a result of a low-level, underlying infection in the body, the anemia may not always show up in lab results. Red blood cell levels may not be accurately depicted by lab results. This is not to say that red blood cell count is entirely incorrect, but just that when lab results don’t match up with a person’s lived experience inside their own body, the lab results should perhaps be disregarded. Again, in TCM, there is a concept known as “blood stasis” that doesn’t really have a useful equivalent in conventional medicine. Blood stasis happens when a part of the body becomes infected with a pathogen that has set up shop in a piece of human real estate that’s already weak. This pathogen may not produce an infection in the proper sense of the term. Rather, it might quietly colonize this piece of real estate and change the polarity of that area of the body to make it slightly more acidic in terms of pH. Usually, pathogens exist in pairs. One member of the pair produces a negative polarity in the body while others produce a positive polarity.
This information about paired pathogens comes from Dr. Isaac Goiz’s biomagnetism which was developed on the basis of Goiz’s studies through NASA. Pathogens may do something called “molecular mimicry” that can involve mimicking human tissues in terms of their form and appearance. It’s very sci-fi and conventional medicine has created multiple definitions of molecular mimicry to try to cover it up in the Internet age. Nonetheless, this definition of molecular mimicry is mind-blowing. It directly challenges the idea of autoimmune disease by suggesting that pathogens can mimic human tissues and the immune system is not just “attacking itself”.
Streptococcus pyogenes can pretend to be the myosin in muscle tissue while Coxsackievirus can pretend to be the actin, for example. When these two example pathogens mimic human tissues, the immune system gets hijacked and it can appear as though the body / immune system is attacking itself (this self-attack behavior of the immune system is diagnosed by conventional medicine doctors as a type of autoimmunity, a concept that was once regarded as totally idiotic before Big Pharma changed the narrative). Molecular mimicry allows pathogens to evade some types of medication and continue to steal ATP or iron (which is like gold for pathogens in the human body). Multiple sclerosis is a disease, for example, that may often involve molecular mimicry of the myelin sheaths surrounding the nerves. Of course, in some MS patients, toxins may be an issue in the nervous system tissue, but molecular mimicry is worth considering in any case. When molecular mimicry is an issue, we have to think outside of the conventional medicine box to solve the problem because conventional medicine is both funding research into molecular mimicry and trying to hide the true nature of molecular mimicry from the public. As an industry giant, it has the funding to both quietly fund studies to try to harness molecular mimicry for profits somehow while simultaneously sending patients on autoimmunity-witch-hunts with well-funded marketing to produce compelling propaganda.
But let’s not get stuck in the politics or we risk not being able to solve the actual health problems that started us down this path in the first place. Blood stasis is a situation where the autonomic nervous system (in particular the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system) will constrict blood vessels that lead to and from an area that has been infected or injured in some way. Blood vessel constriction to and from these areas of the body is adaptive in that it prevents infection from spreading to other areas of the body, but constriction is also maladaptive in that it restricts blood and oxygen flow to areas of the body in need. Blood vessel constriction can sometimes persist beyond infection or injury to create a sort of “imprint” of infectious-states or injured-states in the autonomic nervous system even if the body does not have an infection or an injury anymore. This might manifest as a dull pain in the area that’s been somewhat cut off from the blood supply or it might even look like dementia (if an area of the brain or another organ like the bladder has been cut off from the blood supply). Blood stasis might be imagined as an area or areas of the body where some of the blood that comes into the area is fully oxygenated, but where some of the blood gets trapped in a sort of eddy as a result of infection or sudden injury. The trapped blood turns a dark, chocolate color that means that it lacks oxygen. In other words, the dark blood looks like a liquid scab. It gets muddy and viscous and the eddy (which might be very small or rather large) is experienced as a dull pain somewhere in the body. Frozen shoulder might involve this kind of blood stasis in an organ with a meridian that passes through the shoulder or arm. I have had frozen shoulder twice in my life and though the first frozen shoulder even was resolved with modified, at-home neural therapy injections, my second bout was resolved using HBOT and TCM blood thinners that I mentioned above. I eventually traced the pain to small intestinal inflammation though other organs can also sometimes be involved. HBOT and urine therapy was absolutely essential to the release of this chronic pain.
Though you may have plenty of red blood cells according to your lab results, if your red blood cells are trapped in this kind of eddy where they are not properly circulating back to the lungs for re-oxygenation on a regular basis, it is like these trapped red blood cells are not functioning, thus creating a functional anemia (though you might also be diagnosed with erythrocytosis depending on the location of the eddy and how the eddy connects back into the blood supply). TCM medicines like lumbrokinase, delayed-release serrapeptase, and nattokinase, as we mentioned above can help thin the blood (while also getting rid of biofilm throughout the body) so as to release these areas of blood stasis, but acupuncture, TCM herbs, and HBOT can also help with this problem. Urine therapy (though it is regarded as really gross by most people) is a vital and also very simple way to treat gut dysbiosis (which is normally an extremely complex problem that is very hard to treat).

So a person can have an infection and appear to not have an infection, at least in conventional medicine. And a person can be anemic and appear to be not-anemic according to lab results in doctor’s offices. In TCM, practitioners do not send their sick patients home claiming that the patient is, in fact, healthy per lab results when the patient says, “I’m sick”. Also, diagnoses in TCM do not presuppose that a sick patient will never get well. The goal of TCM is to heal the body over time. But be aware that all TCM practitioners in the states are licensed by Big Pharma. So TCM in the U.S., at least, is no longer operating as the amazing system that it once was before the Chinese Revolution. In China, TCM practitioners took a major hit during the Chinese Revolution, but today, the Guang’anmen Hospital in Beijing still features doctors who can heal the body while standing 5 feet away from the patient doing hand gestures and no other form of treatment.
One day, during my HBOT session, I was reading a scientific article that had been funded by Big Pharma to study TCM herbs that might be re-synthesized in the laboratory and I remembered a dream that I’d had recently where my main medicine-Guide was showing me that conventional medicine was like all of these disconnected cardboard boxes filled with…trash. My primary footing has been in conventional medicine since the beginning of my existence, so I had some negative feelings about this idea – yet I also felt at the time that I was not going to be able to use the conventional model this time to heal myself. I had been able to hobble things together from conventional medicine and “scientific” research for most of my life, but…at the time when I had that dream, I woke up every morning with the feeling that I was dying. I felt like I might not survive this condition.
In the HBOT, as I read the Big-Pharma-funded article that was written to steal TCM herbal remedies from traditional healers, I realized for the first time that conventional medicine is this mess of materials that have been stolen unjustly from other, ancient, and established models of medicine. Big Pharma studies traditional and folk healers and their methods so Big PHarma can steal what’s been painstakingly gathered by these people and the systems they follow so as to make a profit from disease and pain. It makes fun of these models of medicine and these healers that were designed to actually heal patients, but it then steals their material and takes it to a lab to create medicines that are designed to make a profit, not to heal. Once I could see this fact, I couldn’t unsee it. It was everywhere and it shocked me. Conventional medicine began to be represented, in my Inner Reality, as this natural path through a very diverse meadow of natural medicines (the path includes trees, plants, and mushrooms, as well as animals and venoms… it rises and falls in elevation, with heat and cold, lightness and darkness – yin and yang –and other very natural elements for healing) where rotten cardboard boxes had been deposited, disrupting the beauty of nature-based systems of medicine. The cardboard boxes hold things that can make money, not medicines that can heal. They disrupt people’s access and focus on natural ways to heal the body.
Now, when I say, “natural ways to heal the body” I’m not saying that there can’t be technology involved. Vibrational medicine like Rife machines can be really effective when properly applied, but the vibrations are natural. They have not been modified in some toxic way. They’re produced by a machine, the vibrations exist in nature and cannot be patented. Air pressure changes and altitude variations exist in different environments on the planet. There are natural places on earth where healing happens in part because air pressure aligns with other aspects of the environment (like very salty pools of water). There places where it is very dark in the winter and very light in the summer. The yin and yang – the opposites – are key to healing and medicine. The ancient Chinese people noted this. The Yellow Emperor saw the yin and yang of the dark side and the light side of the slender Zhangjiajie National Forest Park mountains in China. These mountains were the inspiration for the Hallelujah Mountains in the movie, Avatar (a movie that essentially lays out of the idea that our western “systems” ignore meaning and instead focus entirely on profits).
HBOT is a way to “go down the mountain” without leaving home. Full-spectrum light therapy devices are a way to endure winter if your body is not able to fully adapt to the darkness and the cold, but my experience is that full-spectrum light only works in a warm environment to get rid of Seasonal Affective Disorder. If we’re talking about neurological diseases and disorders, we’re talking not just about the brain, but the body. Our bodies are wired to respond to the environment, but this wiring can get hijacked or disrupted by a number of different things. If you’re stuck trying to find a cure for a neurological disease, look at the patient and look at the patient’s environment through the lens of yin and yang (opposites). Then consider the idea that humans adapt successfully (or sometimes pathologically) to opposite environmental conditions: high and low, starvation or plenty, light and dark, hot and cold, etc. Look at the environment and also consider emotional trauma (emotional toxins) that you may or may not be privy to, physical toxins that you may or may not be privy to.
There are spiritual tools like sacred medicines that release an internal pressure within the body that’s caused by posture, tension, and ways that we breathe (or don’t breathe). Emotions can create physical illness. The bandhas are a type of breath-pattern for example that creates pressure within the abdomen and thorax of the body, theoretically to increase the partial pressure of oxygen such that the same type of effects as HBOT can be produced. Bandhas, unfortunately, are very hard to do if you’re anemic or sick (I tried bandhas when we were severely anemic, but failed again and again), but if you’re reasonably healthy, bandhas are a type of breathwork that can help your body stay healthy through similar mechanisms of action as HBOT therapy.
The word “natural” seems to imply that we should work with herbs all the time (per the propaganda of conventional medicine), but tech has a lot to offer if we know how to use it to heal the body ourselves within the context of people who love us (doctors are generally, but not always, excluded from this group).
My sense is that mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy may actually be a better choice than higher ATAs of HBOT therapy. I say this because the risk of eye damage and ear damage is far less with lower ATAs. When you work with mild HBOT, you’re working mostly with a natural level of elevation change that could happen if you were walking through the deserts of Israel, Jordan, or Egypt (if you are located at sea level already). If you live at high altitude, mild HBOT therapy can be a bit like delivering packages by car at sea level and then returning to your high-altitude home. Mild HBOT therapy is financially more accessible and people can do it in their own homes in most areas of the world.
I do believe, however, that it can be valuable to have an oxygen mask with very high (above 93%) oxygen levels that can be put on the face and then removed. As patients progress through treatment, oxygen therapy like this can spur the production of new blood vessels after red blood cell count is normalized.
All of that being said though, on a practical note, it’s important to be able to physically handle getting in and out of the HBOT chamber that you plan to buy or use if you have movement disorder or if the patient is very ill. It is vital for another person to be able to sit with a sick person inside the chamber during treatment to make sure that the patient feels okay and wishes to continue. HBOT detoxification symptoms can be tricky because they’re different than the detoxification symptoms that people experience with other natural treatments like chlorine dioxide solution or ozone therapy that are aimed to heal the body and purge what’s causing the illness. HBOT treats the entire body all at once and the administration of the medicine is holistic versus digestive or topical. HBOT therapy produces results one iota at a time and often, people experience detox in one part of their body with shifting concerns as the body prioritizes and deprioritizes the tissues that have degraded as a result of poor oxygenation and blood flow. When blood stasis begins to resolve, oxygenation levels on an oximeter may fluctuate in odd ways to create the sense that you’re moving backward instead of forward healthwise.
Urine therapy can be important for people who have gut dysbiosis. Many people who have neurological disorders also have gut dysbiosis as a central cause of the problem. Urine therapy is not popular, but it is effective. It tends to sell itself when people work with it. That’s really saying something because urine therapy is free-to-all.
Some people might benefit from working with HBOT in a facility. If you have a fairly good grasp of health-related issues and a tendency not to be easily swayed by propaganda, mild HBOT at home can be overwhelmingly beneficial though and much easier to deal with in regard to schedules. Just be aware that panic attacks can happen in HBOT chamber if the patient takes an NSAID prior to treatment (NSAIDS make people susceptible to panic and anxiety or even depression sometimes during the 24 to 72 hours after the last NSAID is taken).. At first, HBOT often produces very noticeably positive results, but after the initial week, it’s important to have a journal that details your starting symptoms to remind yourself where you started. Effects are general and holistic. It can be beneficial to talk to someone who knows a bit about HBOT to get through the most intense parts of the detoxification process. A lot of people are scared away by the detoxification symptoms which require attention (tingly hands and feet or numbness can be very scary for someone who is trying to recover from MS or other types of paralysis).
If you or your loved one has a nervous system issue that you hope to treat using HBOT, be aware that anemic states (including functional anemia) can cause the body to stop producing serotonin. In order for tryptophan to be converted into 5-HTP and then serotonin, oxygen atoms are required by the tryptophan hydroxylase enzyme that catalyzes these conversions. Tryptophan hydroxylase that lacks oxygen cannot cleave the proper molecules to produce serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter. So you can see, at this juncture, how devastating oxygen-related deficiencies can be in the brain and body. Serotonin and insulin work together in the pancreas. Without insulin or if your cells become insulin resistant, your body is no longer able to receive nutrition. Serotonin is vital for proper digestion which means that, once it becomes deficient the “gut-brain” stops functioning properly. Serotonin converts into melatonin at night to ensure that we can sleep and go through the necessary brainwave states that allow us to function as intuitive beings with healthy day-time thoughts. So this problem of low-oxygen and a lack of serotonin can lead to major downstream effects that impact the entire body, mind, and spirit. It’s definitely a downward spiral if you don’t have enough oxygen to fully oxygenate the tryptophan hydroxylase enzyme.
In summary, HBOT has been studied in terms of its ability to heal various neurological issues like dementia as well as schizophrenia or ASD / autism, but patients have to use their critical thinking skills if they’re working with this type of therapy. After years of our own experience working with illness personally and with other families, it is basic to our model to regard major diseases as situations that “imprint” themselves into the family / household environment via the autonomic nervous system all family members. This is not an easy concept to understand. It’s a concept that I resisted many years ago, but that I came to embrace out of necessity. The idea that a severe mental or physical illness in someone I love deeply will imprint itself into my nervous system is a source of hope if you acknowledge and then work with the idea that this imprint from a sick loved one’s nervous system can, first of all, be used to gather information intuitively about the disease, but that also, if you heal the imprint within your own nervous system, this will release and heal some aspect of the disease for your loved one. As families, we carry each other’s pain within this part of the body (the autonomic nervous system and endocrine system). We use psychological tricks to deny this fact and conventional medicine and conventional culture encourages us to deny that this connection exists, but it has been acknowledged by other systems of medicine for centuries.
If you are not willing to do absolutely anything to heal a sick loved one (the sick loved one must be younger or the same age as you, as a rule by the way, or else you turn the family tree on its head in an unnatural way that can harm future generations), how can you expect the sick loved one to take a risk and do something like crawl inside a small tube or capsule to perhaps feel panicky or at times ill as they’re healing. A person who is very ill, like a child, often needs a parent to demonstrate courage and a willingness to release the family-imprint in order to heal completely.
I was not born into a family that ascribed in any way to these ideas. I became someone who believes these things because my family was sick and my children were sick. My grandchild was sick. I knew that my family wouldn’t survive if I didn’t embrace these ideas. Imprints and the ability to heal another person by healing myself did not make sense to me according to my upbringing. It only made sense after I watched it happen and experienced it directly.
So as you consider the idea of HBOT for a loved one, be aware that ideas about “magic bullet cures” can be terribly misleading and disillusioning. We all exist on earth to heal something. We have choices about the healing process. We can ignore the healing task and try to distract ourselves with any number of other things or we can embrace the call to heal. Sometimes people have to heal their finances. Sometimes they have to heal a family tree that’s been turned on its head for centuries (with adult children always looking backward in the Bert Hellinger sense of things, trying to heal their aging parents while their own children are sick and dying). Sometimes people have to heal an illness or a job-situation that makes their life hell. If you have a loved one who suffers from an illness that is literally all encompassing to you (because you love this person), then you can start with yourself and this “imprint” if you want. You can also reject the idea that we have imprints of other people’s nervous systems inside our own nervous system. For me, this imprint is a source of hope. It’s something I might be able to use to help someone I love if that person is sick. But not everyone who reads this will want to take responsibility for another person’s illness. That’s okay. We all start wherever we can start. But now the idea of an imprint is in your mind. You can pull it back up later if it seems to fit and be useful to you. A lot of readers are so down-trodden and stressed out that they can’t take in a new idea that might provide them with a bit of hope. I’ve been that person. Lydian has been that person. HBOT, in that case, is a place to start for people with neurological disease (as well as gut dysbiosis and a wide range of other health issues), but always be aware that, in psychology, the sick patient becomes the “identified patient”. The sick patient becomes burdened with providing the rest of the family with hope…which can make the sick patient sicker. So you always treat yourself as you treat a sick patient so as to release the imprints within the household and the family as a whole and be aware of human nature as a well-studied thing that was not, as it turns out, recently discovered and fleshed out by modern psychology and conventional medicine. What’s known about healing diseases has been known for centuries and you can find it if you choose to look at other systems of medicine like TCM, Ayurveda, Unani, etc.
