Schistosomiasis Alternative Treatment

Schistosomiasis is caused by several Schistosoma species that reside in the veins draining the hollow viscera. Infection occurs through contact with contaminated water. The lifecycle is complex, involving a tropical aquatic snail as an intermediate host. Cercariae released by infected snails penetrate human skin, migrate to the lungs, and ultimately settle in the mesenteric venules, where they mature and begin depositing eggs intravascularly. Acute symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and malaise though a variety of symptoms are possible. One client that we had experienced extreme cystitis or bladder irritation, for example, as a part of his symptom picture. Chronic disease arises from the local inflammatory response to eggs trapped in surrounding tissue. In the intestine, trapped eggs can cause granulomatous inflammation, bleeding, or pseudopolyps that, in turn, lead to general gut inflammation. In the liver, eggs lodged in presinusoidal vessels can cause presinusoidal fibrosis, noncirrhotic portal hypertension, and esophageal varices that cause downstream inflammation and digestive issues.

In conventional medicine, diagnosis typically relies on detecting eggs in feces, supplemented by serology and characteristic radiologic findings though as with all of the parasite diagnostic procedures, misdiagnosis is common.

Praziquantel for Schistosomiasis

Treatment in conventional medicine is praziquantel, 40 mg/kg, as a single dose. Unfortunately, drug resistance is common so patients don’t always respond to this treatment predictably.

Carnivore Diet and Lugol’s Iodine for Schistosomiasis

We’ve worked with more than one client with schistosomiasis. Iodine supplementation with Lugol’s iodine was extremely important for overcoming his infection as well as vitamin B17 / amygdalin. Our clients have generally had success at overcoming schistosomiasis by following a carnivore diet as well.

Artemisia annua for Schistosomiasis

Artemisia annua, also known as Wormwood or Qing Hao (in Traditional Chinese Medicine) was used by one client who had noteworthy success after years of not having any success at treating his disease. He administered 5 grams of Artemisia annua in 2.5 gram doses twice daily as a tea at first but later switched to capsules that contained Artemisia annua instead.

Myrrh Essential Oil and Guggul for Schistosomiasis

Myrrh essential oil, myrrh extract, or myrrh in the form of Guggul, an Ayurvedic remedy, has been successfully used to cure schistosomiasis that’s resistant to praziquantel. Myrrh is an oleo-gum resin from the plant known as Commiphora molmol and it is very effective at treating schistosomiasis. It is administered at a dose of 10 mg per kilogram of the patient’s body weight and after just 3 days of treatment it has a cure rate of 91.7%. The 8.3% of patients who do not respond within the first 3 days of treatment can be given another 10 mg per kilogram course of treatment for six days. These patients, according to studies, should have a cure rate, in turn, of 76.5%. In other words, the vast majority of patients who work with myrrh or Guggul should respond to treatment within about a week. Note that myrrh is a substance that assists the body in its use of iodine, so we recommend that patients always include Lugol’s iodine as a part of their treatment protocol in addition to dosing with myrrh or Guggul according to the dose recommended here.
