Praziquantel for Intestinal Flukes
If you go to a doctor, treatment for intestinal flukes is a single dose of praziquantel (25 mg/kg). Be aware that sometimes this treatment doesn’t work because of drug-resistance. Also, while praziquantel is effective against larval stages of intestinal flukes, it doesn’t work as well to treat other stages in the life cycle of this parasite. As such, though doctors give just one dose of praziquantel, it is unlikely that this one dose will effectively overcome the disease. Alternative treatments are powerful, however, and these treatments can be used to overcome and prevent fluke infection.Nicotine and Intestinal Flukes
Nicotine is a substance found in natural tobacco plants as well as in other plants including tomatoes and eggplants. While smoking commercial cigarettes (which contain a variety of toxins can lead to poor outcomes in regard to fluke infections, in fact nicotine paralyzes flukes via the interaction between nicotine and the nicotinic receptors in parasites.Click here to subscribe to the Living Database!
Studies indicate that nicotine exposure through commercial cigarette-smoking along with a Schistosoma infection can increase genetic mutations that lead to cancer, pure nicotine administered through plants such as wild tobacco (Nicotiana rustica) can have a protective effect against flukes and also against thyroid cancer.Tobacco leaf extract, which contains pure nicotine without toxic additives that are found in commercial cigarettes, has a natural schistomicidal activity against adult worms.
