Home Remedies for Liver Flukes

Liver flukes reside in the bile ducts and are acquired by eating metacercariae encysted on freshwater plants (Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica) or in raw or undercooked fish (Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis viverrini, and O. felineus). These are long-lived parasites, some surviving for decades, and they cause no symptoms in most people. When symptomatic, they produce recurrent cholangitis (inflammation of the bile ducts), biliary duct dilation or obstruction, and occasionally pancreatitis or eosinophilic liver abscess. They can also be misdiagnosed as cancer.

The most worrisome complication from C. sinensis and O. viverrini is cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), a risk serious enough to drive recommendations that individuals from endemic areas be screened for liver flukes. But let me rephrase this issue so that readers can think about it critically. Is cholangiocarcinoma really cancer or is it a liver fluke infection? If it is a liver fluke infection, treatment is much different and patients should be optimistic about health outcomes. Doctors are unlikely to acknowledge that cholangiocarcinoma is a liver flukes infection even if it is plainly visible that this is the issue. They will still push conventional cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery even though these things are likely to weaken the body’s immune defenses in a way that could lead to death as a result of the parasite infection as the actual liver issue.

Albendazole or Triclabendazole for Liver Flukes Infection

Treatment for fascioliasis is triclabendazole (10 mg/kg, single dose) or albendazole. Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis species is treated with praziquantel (25 mg/kg every 8 hours for 3 doses) in conventional medicine.

Commiphora myrrha / Myrrh for Liver Flukes Infection

As with schistosomiasis, liver flukes are also very responsive to treatment with Guggul / myrrh. Administer Guggul or a myrrh extract at a dose of 10  mg / kg of the patient’s body weight for 6 days. Thereafter, administer 1 gram of myrrh three times daily.

Areca catechu / Betel Nut for Liver Flukes Infection

Betel nut extracts are an effective natural treatment for a liver flukes infection when administered in the proper context. Betel nuts, of course, are chewed recreationally in some areas of the world and in this context, they can produce cancer and destroy dental health. But in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), treatment with betel nut extract is carried out at a dose of  3 to 10 grams daily (in divided doses). Seek out a TCM practitioner to ensure that you get the proper dose to overcome liver flukes.

Nicotiana rustica for Liver Flukes Infection

Nicotiana rustica, also known as wild tobacco, is a natural treatment and prevention agent for liver flukes. Administration of Ambil, an Amazonian sacred medicine made with wild tobacco and salts is a good method of administration of this herb that preserves lung health and promotes healing of the liver and the thyroid gland. Nicotiana rustica administration and dosing in the form of Ambil requires just a bit of learning to do it correctly.
