The Brain-Brown Fat-Liver Axis

NOTE: This discussion is a part of a larger series of articles about liver health, brown fat cells, brain function, and the body's ability to regulate its own temperature to prevent chronic or intermittent low-grade (or high-grade) fever-states that can be experienced, at times as depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, or other serious health problems that are treatable using natural tools. The brain-brown-fat-liver axis is responsive to alcohol consumption. In order to understand how and why alcohol can be used as a medicine in both children and adults, it’s important to make this connection between the brain, brown fat, and the liver. Alcohol consumption stimulates the hypothalamus and sympathetic nervous system nerves that innervate brown fat tissues to dramatically increase brown adipose tissue uncoupling protein 1 / UCP-1 expression. In other words, alcohol consumption in low doses increases brown fat tissue activity via the sympathetic nervous system. Brown adipose tissue and beige fat (i.e. white fat cells that are in the process of converting to brown fat cells) oxidize fatty acids which fuels the uncoupling protein-1-mediated production of heat by brown fat cells. So, in other words, brown fat burns white fat. And the conversion from white fat to brown fat also releases fat-soluble vitamins into circulation for use (rather than just for storage) in the body. This process prevents trafficking of fats into the liver where they can build up and become toxic – the cause of fatty liver disease.

Uncoupling protein-1 / UCP-1 is a special protein that can move a positively charged proton against a concentration gradient in mitochondria to prevent the use of that proton for the production of ATP and instead use it to produce heat-energy. But in addition to UCP-1, brown fat also produces adipokines such as adiponectin which prevents liver injury and liver-cell death. Essentially, activation of brown fat and the conversion of white fat to brown fat, prevents fatty liver disease from developing. Cold exposure therapy and herbal treatments that activate brown fat can also be useful as a natural cure for fatty liver disease.
