Immune Modulation Effects / Cytokine Storm Treatment Effects

It’s important to have medicines on hand that can help you get a cytokine storm under control during an infection. Most people really became aware of the phrase “cytokine storm” during the COVID pandemic, but few people knew what to do to prevent a cytokine storm. It was, at that time, fairly widely known and understood that the cytokine storm was the thing that was killing people. But COVID is not the only infectious disease that can involve a potentially deadly cytokine storm.

At the time of this writing, Ebola is raging in central Africa. Like COVID, the cytokine storm that causes profuse bleeding and organ failure is the most important thing that doctors try to manage and control during the infection. An Ebola cytokine storm produces different symptoms than those that became famous during COVID, but the importance of being able to control the body’s over-reaction to the infection is something that should be on everybody’s radar during a major infection.

But in addition to infection treatment, autoimmunity is another health problem that can benefit from Mitragyna speciosa. We’ve already talked a bit about kratom for diabetes (a so-called autoimmune disease) and its usefulness as a blood sugar lowering agent and diabetic neuropathy treatment, but kratom also has the ability to modulate the immune system’s reactivity to colonizing pathogens that cause autoimmune disease by modulating cytokine production and macrophage activation. In other words, kratom can reduce immune system reactivity and act as an anti-inflammatory agent through its ability to calm the immune system.

Kratom contains a number of healing alkaloids that act to modulate or inhibit the following molecules that play a role in cytokine storms and the severity of infections:
  • Nitric oxide
  • Reactive oxygen species
  • MCP-1 inhibition
  • Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha
  • Interleukin-6 / IL-6
  • Toll-Like Receptor-4 / TLR-4
  • Enzyme pathways such as:

  • Kep 1-Nrf2 pathway
  • Superoxide Dismutase / SOD
  • Catalase / CAT
  • Glutathione-S-Transferase / GST
  • Cyclooxygenase-2
  • 5-lipoxygenase

Kratom has powerful antioxidant effects and it inhibits enzymes and inflammation through various mechanisms of action, but it also stimulates the following to support tissue repair and regeneration after infection:

  • Cell migration
  • Endothelial migration
  • Angiogenesis
  • Interleukin-10 production (which support an anti-inflammatory response)

Finally, kratom can suppress the macrophage inflammatory response in the body to further support a balanced reaction to infection or tissue damage. So when you or your child gets a fever at the onset of infection, kratom can be beneficial in lowering the fever, reducing body aches, treating the underlying infection, and also lowering the risk of developing a cytokine storm.
