Kratom for Allergies / Antihistamine Effects of Kratom

WARNING: DO NOT COMBINE KRATOM WITH OTHER ANTIHISTAMINES AND / OR MOTION SICKNESS MEDICATIONS.

There are a number of anecdotal reports that indicate that kratom is useful as an antihistamine herb. My son-in-law suffered for many years with severe allergies at times that were almost incapacitating. He’s had success using kratom, particularly the green and white veins for his allergies. Other people have reported the same effect. Kratom strains that are energizing (such as white vein) may have the most pronounced anti-allergy effect.

There is scientific evidence, in fact, to support the use of kratom for allergies. Though kratom has not been studied directly in regard to its anti-allergy effects and search results online querying the use of kratom for allergies comes up with information steering people away from it, in fact, there are Reddit groups documenting its anti-allergy effects anecdotally. But also, kratom downregulates TRPV1 channels to reduce the expression of histaminic responses in the body.

Histamine plays a role in pain-production, inflammation, and allergic reactions, but the TRPV1 channels can modify how histaminic reactions are expressed. Indeed, TRPV1 channel blockers like mitragynine (the main bio-active alkaloid found in kratom), can reduce pain, inflammation, and allergy symptoms without changing histamine levels. This is important because antihistamine medications tend to cause drowsiness which is an undesirable side effect. The white vein kratom that seems to be most effective as a treatment for allergy symptoms does not produce drowsiness despite the fact that it can reduce allergy symptoms. In fact, white vein kratom is a stimulant that causes wakefulness rather than sleepiness.

Histamine is a neurohormone that can produce itching and inflammation. Histamine can also excite pain-producing C-fibers in the nervous system. The TRPV1 receptors typically sense heat and inflammation and they work downstream from histamine. While histamine modification can cause negative side effects, modifying TRPV1 receptors using a plant medicine like kratom can produce fewer side effects and more powerful anti-allergy effects in the body. Studies have shown, for example, that in mice that lack TRPV1 receptors, histamine-induced scratching and itching due to allergic reaction is markedly reduced. Scientists have reasons through these studies that TRPV1 plays a key role in the itchiness that happens with histamine release.

Studies have shown that mitragynine in combination with cannabinoids (CBD products) can enhance the pain-relieving and allergy-reducing effects of both in some cases. Kratom has some cannabinoid effects on the body that are enhanced by the simultaneous administration of CBD products.

Studies have shown that mitragynine at a dose of 15 to 30 mg per kilogram body weight significantly reduces TRPV1 expression in animal models. Kratom leaves typically contain 0.5 to 1.5% mitragynine which means that 1 gram of kratom as whole plant material would contain 50 to 150 mg of mitragynine. For those with allergies, white vein kratom may work best for allergies at a dose around 0.5 to 1 gram every 6 hours.
