Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatments for PCOS

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese therapy that works by stimulating different energy points on the body using either needles, electricity, or cupping to encourage proper energy flow. According to this system of medicine, improper energetic flow leads to disease, and correction of this flow can lead to healing.
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat literally all kinds of health conditions, including fertility problems, PCOS-related symptoms, and other women’s health complaints. As a fertility treatment, this therapy has been highly effective for many women. Some women have to go to multiple acupuncture sessions before they see results, while other women only need one session before they notice a difference. Either way, one of the unique things about acupuncture is that it works holistically to treat not only the symptoms of disease, but the cause of the disease itself.

One study into the use of acupuncture on PCOS-caused infertility administered treatment once every two days for a total of three treatments per week over the course of 2 “sessions” (one menstrual cycle = one session). In the women who received acupuncture, lower BMI was noted, as well as reduced estradiol levels and reduced testosterone levels. The rates of clinical pregnancy were also higher among the group receiving treatment than in the control group.

Women who wish to try acupuncture as a treatment option for infertility and/or polycystic ovarian syndrome should seek out an experienced, licensed practitioner.
