Brahmi / Bacopa monnieri for Opioid Toxicity Treatment
Brahmi is an important herbal remedy for opioid toxicity.
At 40 mg/kg, B. monnieri can help morphine or heroin addicts overcome kidney and liver toxicity associated with their addiction. Some studies have found that pretreatment with Bacopa monnieri and/or ascorbic acid (vitamin C), administered before taking street opiates like heroin, can specifically help maintain and restore elevated serum levels of AST, ALT, and creatinine (these are indicators of hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity). Thus, Brahmi may be valuable as a way to relieve toxicity caused by chronic or acute opiate drug use, which may also help prevent or manage some withdrawal symptoms or other accompanying health problems.
It may also be a helpful herbal medicine for opiate addicts who are “weaning” themselves off of opiates slowly. For people who are working to slowly stop taking opiates, Brahmi may not only help specifically prevent further damage to the kidneys and liver, but may in fact speed up the process of quitting opiates by reducing drug tolerance levels. In one animal study, butanol extracts of Bacopa monnieri, administered at a daily dose of 5, 10, or 15mg/kg for 7 days, both reduced and prevented the development of morphine tolerance in mice that had been given morphine at a dose of 20mg/kg, twice daily, for 5 days prior to treatment with Brahmi.
Also worth noting is that this study found that Bacopa monnieri increased the pain-relieving qualities of morphine in morphine-intolerant animals. This suggests that Brahmi may be a valuable herbal medicine to combine, perhaps, with certain other pain-relieving treatments or treatments for opiate addiction in order to increase their efficacy.
Finally, an animal study done on mice found that Bacoside A3 and other compounds found in Brahmi can also help prevent morphine withdrawal induced depression (and other similar, opiate-induced withdrawal depressions as well). In this study, mice were given a daily dose of 10, 20, or 30 mg/kg of bodyweight of methanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri, which contained approximately 4mcg of Bacoside A3 per milligram of extract. Consistent treatment with any of these doses of Brahmi extract were found to be effective in treating morphine withdrawal induced depression in the animal subjects.

Brahmi Dosing for Opioid Withdrawals
Brahmi can be administered to humans at a dose of 500 mg, given twice daily (for a total daily dose of 1 gram per day). It can be given in capsule/tablet form or as a powder that can be mixed into smoothies or teas; if you choose to take a powder of Brahmi, make sure to use a small kitchen scale to measure the powder before taking it.Ideally, Brahmi should be taken consistently for at least a few weeks in order to see results and maximum benefits. Using Brahmi this way can help not only minimize opioid withdrawal symptoms, but can also help reset the body and encourage improvements in focus, memory, general cognitive function, mood balance, stress management, sleep, and more.
