Ayurvedic Herbs for Pregnancy: Tinospora Cordifolia / Guduchi / Giloy

Guduchi is an Ayurvedic herb that's safe for use during pregnancy at less than 500 mg per day.
Tinospora cordifolia, also known as Guduchi or Giloy in Ayurvedic medicine, is a broad spectrum herb that can be used to treat a number of diseases and disorders during pregnancy. It must be administered in smaller doses of less than 500 mg during pregnancy which limits to some extent which diseases can be cured using Tinospora cordifolia as a stand-alone treatment. In non-pregnant patients, the doses of this herb are much higher. In any case, during pregnancy, women can take up to 500 mg of Tinospora cordifolia daily. Often, at the lower dose, this herb will need to be combined with other herbs to treat more serious diseases during pregnancy.

In the Ayurvedic medical texts, Guduchi is also referred to as “Amrita”. It is held in high regard as an essential remedy that improves immunity, restores vitality, and supports longevity. The word “guduchi” itself means “herb that protects the entire body”. In practice, this herb targets the kidneys, liver, and spleen.

Guduchi as a Nutritive Herb

Guduchi has a high nutritional content which makes it a nutritive herb. Nutritive herbs tend to be valuable during pregnancy especially as medicinal agents that provide nutrients to women who may be struggling to eat well due to morning sickness or other problems. Nutritive herbs also tend to do a lot of multi-tasking in terms of healing. Guduchi is no exception. It generally strengthens tissues while detoxifying the body.

Guduchi as an Herbal Remedy for Autoimmunity During Pregnancy

Guduchi acts as an adaptogen. It works to help the body balance stress. This herb strengthens and balances the immune system. At 500 mg per day during pregnancy, Guduchi can be used as a mild adaptogen that keeps the body’s response to stress balanced.

Guduchi as an Herbal Remedy for Liver Congestion

During pregnancy, the kidneys grow significantly and the body must work especially hard to remove toxins. Meanwhile the liver and gallbladder are burdened by the extra reproductive hormones circulating in the body which often leads to gallbladder problems such as gallstones during pregnancy. Guduchi is an herb that keeps bile flowing which means that it also keeps toxins moving out of the body during pregnancy. As such, it can help prevent gallstones and it can also be useful in women who develop urinary tract infection during pregnancy.

Guduchi as an Herbal Remedy for Urinary Tract Infection During Pregnancy

Though the treatment of UTIs during pregnancy may not be at the top of the list for Guduchi’s medicinal benefits, this herb can be extremely beneficial to women who develop kidney infection during pregnancy. The kidneys are burdened with a lot of extra toxins to remove during gestation, but Guduchi can support the kidneys in part by supporting the liver’s natural ability to remove toxins from the body. If the liver is working well, the kidneys will have an extra bit of support that can make or break one’s efforts to treat UTI with herbs during pregnancy.

Guduchi as an Herbal Remedy for Joint Pain

Through its detoxifying effects on the body, Guduchi is able to clear toxins from the joint tissues to make joints less painful.

Guduchi as an Herbal Remedy for Acne During Pregnancy

Some women develop severe acne as a result of pregnancy. This is often due to liver congestion and kidney congestion. As we’ve discussed above, Guduchi can support detoxification of the body. Thus, it can be useful in the treatment of acne during pregnancy.

Guduchi has the ability to balance the intestinal flora. And it strengthens the digestive system and stimulates peristalsis. This herb also helps control blood sugar levels. As such, it is another potential herbal remedy for gestational diabetes. It is not as powerful as a blood sugar regulator as Baobab or Melissa officinalis, but Guduchi can support the effects of these other gold-star gestational diabetes herbal cures.

Guduchi as an Herbal Remedy for Anxiety During Pregnancy

Via its effects on gastrointestinal health and liver health, Guduchi promotes a sense of relaxation and calm in the body.

Other Medicinal Effects of Tinospora cordifolia:

During pregnancy, women are typically given relatively small doses of Guduchi. At this dose, Guduchi can keep certain health issues like gestational diabetes under control, but the herb should be given at much higher doses after pregnancy to treat more serious health problems. Essentially, the low recommended dose of this herb can limit its medicinal action to some extent during pregnancy. Nonetheless, Guduchi can be extremely valuable even at a small dose in the treatment of UTI, fever, digestive upsets, skin problems, and gestational diabetes.
