How to Choose a CBD Oil for Children with ADHD

Cannabis can be an important adjunct herbal treatment for ADHD. Though some parents have had success treating ADHD with only cannabis, Mucuna pruriens is definitely the core herbal cure for ADHD that works very reliably when it is combined with the right vitamins and minerals. But as a natural herbal remedy for ADHD, CBD can be applied to the skin which can be a useful tool in the initial treatment stages.

I usually recommend that parents with ADHD children find a CBD product that contains grapeseed oil at approximately 250 mg per dose or more. Grapeseed oil can be combined with CBD oil to make the medicine healthier for kids and adults in terms of cardiovascular health. And grapeseed oil also contains some obscure vitamins that play a vital role in preventing cancer.

Not all CBD oils are created the same. It’s important that you choose a product that contains 0% THC. THC is the substance in cannabis that causes people to feel “high”. The concentration of the CBD oil doesn’t matter as much as the type of carrier oil that’s been combined with the CBD. If you buy a product that contains 250 mg per dose and you wish to give your child 250 mg in the morning and in the evening as part of their natural ADHD treatment, you would apply that dose to your child’s skin, or give them the CBD oil orally. On the other hand, if you wish to use a higher concentration of CBD to treat ADHD, you would simply administer a lower dose of the high-concentration CBD to the child’s skin or as drops under the tongue to achieve the same effects as the 250 mg concentration.

In other words, if you purchase a 1000 mg high-concentration CBD product to treat ADHD, you may only give your child 1 drop of that product. But if you purchase a product that contains 500 mg of CBD per dose, you will have to give your child twice as much to achieve the same effects (2 drops). A product that contains 250 mg of CBD would require a higher dose even still (4 drops).

Though CBD gummies or other CBD products could theoretically be used to treat ADHD, many of these products contain corn syrup or other refined sugars that can make ADHD symptoms worse. I recommend that parents use CBD oil that contains grapeseed oil as the carrier oil because of the health benefits of grapeseed oil, which contains vitamin B17, an essential nutrient that has strong anti-cancer benefits.

How does CBD relieve symptoms of ADHD?

CBD oil activates the endocannabinoid system in the brain and body. This system in our body was literally programmed to respond to natural cannabinoids that are found in plants like Echinacea purpurea, black pepper, broccoli, carrots, ginseng, and Cannabis. The endocannabinoid system or endocannabinoid system is a system that plays an important role in the functioning of the central nervous system. It plays an important role in synaptic plasticity.

The cannabinoid system is made up of cannabinoid receptors that respond to the presence of endogenous cannabinoids (cannabinoids that exist naturally in the body) and enzymes that either create cannabinoids from foods or that degrade cannabinoids into other substances in the brain and body.

CB1 cannabinoid receptors are the most abundant in the body, but CB2 receptors also interact in important ways with the cannabinoids in CBD oil. The cannabinoid receptors are present even in the earliest stages of embryo development and in human development, they play vital roles. Indeed, endocannabinoids are present in human breast milk which has led scientists to recognize the importance of cannabinoids in proper infant development as well as in the development of young children. Scientists believe that cannabinoids, like the ones found in CBD oil, may play the following roles in healthy human development:

  • Promotes embryonal implantation
  • Promotes suckling in newborn babies
  • Activation of CB1 receptors in newborns is vital for their survival
  • Promotes healthy neural development
  • Acts to protect the brain from neuron loss due to trauma
  • Some scientists believe that dysfunctional CB1 receptors in infants may be the underlying cause of “non-organic failure to thrive” syndrome.

The endocannabinoid system plays an important regulatory role in central nervous system activity that is most obvious in schizophrenic patients. In schizophrenia, the endocannabinoid system is disordered.

CBD Oil Treatment for ADHD: What to Expect

Some children won’t need to use CBD oil as part of their ADHD treatment if they are taking amino acids and/or Mucuna pruriens treatments with the appropriate supportive vitamins and minerals. Many children can benefit from being given CBD oil during the initial stages of treatment however. During the first week or two, CBD oil can be administered to the skin in small doses whenever the child feels like they need it. Using low-dose CBD oil in this way, allows children to express the need for something that may otherwise be hard for them to describe.

A child with ADHD will, in the initial stages of healing during the first week or two of treatment with herbs, go through a period of detoxification from the prescription medications they’ve been taking. When they are experiencing symptoms of detox, they may feel odd and have a difficult expressing the physical, mental, or emotional experience of detox from prescription medications. When a child is going through this detox period, they can benefit from having a medicine like CBD that can make them feel more calm.

After about a month of treatment, most children don’t need CBD oil if they are taking high-dose Mucuna pruriens or L-Tyrosine or L-Phenylalanine along with the requisite supporting supplements.

CBD Oil Dosing for ADHD Treatment:

Children ages 3-5 years of age can be given 1-2 drop of 250 mg CBD oil via the skin for the first 2 weeks of treatment. Children can administer 1-2 drop of 250 mg CBD oil 2 to 4 times per day.

Children ages 6 to 8 years of age can be given 2-4 drops of 250 mg CBD oil via the skin or as drops under the tongue. Administer CBD on an as-needed basis up to 4 times per day.

Children ages 9 to 11 years can be given 4-5 drops of 250 mg CBD oil via the skin or as drops under the tongue. Administer the CBD on an as-needed basis up to 4 times daily.

Children over 12 years of age can be given 6 -7 drops of 250 mg CBD oil topically or as sublingual drops. Administer the CBD oil on an as-needed basis up to 4 times daily.
