Cure Cancer During Pregnancy as well as Gestational Diabetes: Medicago sativa / Alfalfa / Lucerne

Alfalfa is truly a miracle herb and during pregnancy, it can be used to treat serious diseases naturally like gestational diabetes and cancer.

"The Natural Women's Health Guide... to Pregnancy - BUY HERE!"

Alfalfa is a plant in the legume or Fabaceae family. Though alfalfa (also known as Medicago sativa or “lucerne”) has not been studied in terms of its safety during pregnancy, it is a nutritive, food-like herb. As such, many experts regard alfalfa as safe during pregnancy based on anecdotal evidence. Farmers and ranchers don’t restrict their livestock from consuming alfalfa during pregnancy or lactation as it is believed to be beneficial during gestation.

This herb has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine and it has also been administered as a homeopathic remedy in some cases as well. Drinking a daily tea made from Medicago sativa during pregnancy can help keep the digestive system functioning properly while balancing nutrition, reducing cholesterol, preventing osteoporosis and the weakening of bone tissues, preventing arteriosclerosis, and generally slowing the aging process.

One study found that Medicago sativa was able to increase milk production in dairy cows which seems to indicate that alfalfa could be an herbal remedy for low breast milk production in humans too.

Nutritional Value of Alfalfa

Alfalfa has an excellent nutrient profile. Alfalfa can be administered as an herbal multivitamin during pregnancy along with other nutrient herbs and supplements (with special attention to methyl-folate, iron, and choline dosing). It can be taken to gain weight during pregnancy. It can also be taken by those with protein allergies to improve one’s general nutrition.

Alfalfa Phytoestrogens to Prevent Miscarriage Naturally

Alfalfa has the ability to modify hormone levels in the body. It works to increase estrogen if there is too little estrogen present in the body, but it also has the ability to reduce estrogen levels if estrogen levels are too high. This plant is high in both phytosterols and phytoestrogens including:

  • Genistein
  • Daidzein
  • Coumestans / Coumestrol
  • Quercetin

All of these substances have estrogen-modulating effects on the body. As an herbal treatment for night sweats and hot flashes during menopause, alfalfa has been studied alongside treatment with Sage (Salvia officinalis). The use of Salvia officinalis and Medicago sativa together was able to successfully get rid of night sweats and hot flashes in 20 out of 30 menopausal women. This study demonstrates the estrogen-modulating effects of alfalfa on the body.

The combination of Salvia officinalis and Medicago sativa has a slight anti-dopamine effect on the body. During pregnancy, the estrogenic effects of alfalfa can help to prevent miscarriage by keeping estrogen levels high throughout the gestation process. This herb is a gentle plant that likely contains the powerful anticancer nutrient known as “amygdalin” or vitamin B17 along with vitamin K2 and nutrients like Manganese, Zinc, and Selenium that support the absorption and proper metabolism of iodine in the body. It also supports the action of the pancreas, an organ that, when diseased, plays a major role in the development of cancer. So alfalfa can be regarded as an herbal remedy for cancer during pregnancy (see below). It should be taken in higher doses (20 grams per day) as a treatment for cancer during pregnancy along with Lugol’s iodine 2% (50 mg per day or 20 drops), and baking soda therapy to treat cancer naturally during pregnancy.

Also note that red clover is another Fabaceae plant that has powerful anticancer effects and red clover is another pregnancy-friendly herb. Lydi took red clover every day when she was pregnant to keep her estrogen levels high (to prevent miscarriage).  Click here to read more about the medicinal effects of red clover.

Alfalfa as a Cure for Cancer During Pregnancy

Phytoestrogens of Medicago sativa have strong estrogenic activity and this herb can be used in the treatment of hormone-related cancers. Alfalfa has an alkalizing effect on the body. Alkalizing the body is one of the most powerful ways to safely treat cancer during pregnancy. Though baking soda therapy is arguably the most important natural treatment for cancer during pregnancy, alfalfa contains both vitamin B17 and vitamin K2, two of the most important nutrients to treat cancer as well. Indeed, alfalfa supports iodine absorption and metabolism as well as pancreatic function, the other two cancer treatments that are vital to overcome the disease permanently.

In addition to alfalfa’s vitamin and mineral content, this herb also contains L-canavanine, an amino acid that has anti-tumor effects against certain types of leukemia.

Alfalfa as an Herbal Remedy for Gestational Diabetes

Medicago sativa has been studied in animals to demonstrate that it functions as an herbal remedy for high blood sugar and hyperlipidemia. In one study, rats were given Medicago sativa extract for 7 weeks. Their serum lipid levels and cholesterol improved significantly during this time. Scientists believe that alfalfa modulates enzymes that are involved in the production, uptake, and excretion of cholesterol. This is important as cholesterol metabolism plays a role in the production of gallstones and gallbladder attack during pregnancy (a common problem in pregnant women). Alfalfa generally mitigates the risk of gallbladder problems during pregnancy when administered daily throughout gestation. Another study involving an aqueous extract of Medicago sativa in diabetic mice demonstrated that alfalfa can stimulate insulin secretion from pancreatic B-cells. Both water and ethanol extracts of alfalfa had this effect and scientists believe that more than one constituent of this herb is active as a natural treatment for gestational diabetes. Though many herbal remedies for gestational diabetes work through one mechanism of action, for example, to lower blood sugar through insulin-releasing activity, alfalfa has both insulin-releasing activity as well as insulin-like activity in the body. This herb is generally supportive to pancreatic function which, in turn, means that it can reduce the symptoms of gestational diabetes and treat high blood sugar even while providing an array of vital nutrients that can help reverse the condition. As an herb that supports the function of the pancreas during pregnancy, alfalfa thus also plays a role in immune system function and general health. After digestion, excess pancreatic enzymes normally circulate in the body to digest pathogens and infectious microorganisms. Though it isn’t wise for women to take pancreatic enzymes during pregnancy because these enzymes also play a role in softening the cervix when it’s time for a woman to give birth, pancreatic enzyme therapy can be essential in the recovery period after giving birth especially in women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Click here to read about Moringa oleifera, another herbal remedy for gestational diabetes that contains an array of vital nutrients for pregnancy. Note that Moringa oleifera and alfalfa can be taken together during pregnancy.  Also be sure to click here to read about Melissa officinalis, another herbal remedy for gestational diabetes. Melissa officinalis can also be administered with both Moringai and Medicago sativa

Alfalfa: Herbal Antibiotic That’s Safe During Pregnancy

Alfalfa has an antimicrobial effect that’s especially high against Gram-positive bacteria such as:

  • Bacillus cereus

Alfalfa: Herbal Antifungal That’s Safe During Pregnancy

Alfalfa also has an antifungal effect that is particularly active against Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Scientists believe that the antifungal capabilities of alfalfa derive from the root saponin known as medicagenic acid 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside, otherwise known as Compound G2. Compound G2 has antifungal abilities against a variety of medically important yeasts and dermatophytes.

Compound G2 is able to cause ions to leak out of yeast cells which leads to their imminent death. Even amphotericin B-resistant Candida tropicalis is susceptible to Compound G2.

Alfalfa Side Effects for Lupus Patients

Pregnant women who have lupus should know that some studies have shown that large doses of alfalfa seeds and sprouts can promote lupus symptoms. This effect seems to occur because of the amino acid L-canavanine.

If you have lupus, you should avoid alfalfa seeds and sprouts but the alfalfa leaves that are administered as tea, tincture, and pills contain only a trace amount of canavanine (perhaps 25 - 33 micrograms per tablet). As such, women with lupus can still use alfalfa leaves to treat different health problems during pregnancy, but they should avoid alfalfa sprouts and seeds.

Alfalfa Dosing During Pregnancy:

Alfalfa Infusion

Administer alfalfa as a hot tea by first boiling 8 ounces of water. Put 5-6.5 grams of alfalfa powder in a mug. After boiling, pour the hot water over the alfalfa powder. Drink this tea up to 3 times per day (for a total of between 5-20 grams of alfalfa per day).

Alfalfa Extract

Administer 2-20 mL of alfalfa alcohol extract per day.

Alfalfa Pills

Administer 300-1500 mg of alfalfa pills per day.
