Coenzyme Q10, also known as "ubiquinone", is a quinone that's related to vitamin K2 / menaquinone. GMO plants, which include staple food products like corn, soy, and wheat do not produce coenzyme Q10 as natural, non-GMO plant products do. So women may not get enough coenzyme Q10 or menaquinone-7 / vitamin K2. A deficiency of either of these nutrients can lead to blood vessel abnormalities in the placenta.

Preeclampsia Prevention

Preeclampsia is a complication in 5 to 10% of all pregnancies. Preeclampsia occurs as a result of placental dysfunction which tends to occur as a result of mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria are rather like the batteries inside human cells that produce electricity that ultimately supplies the cell with the energy that it needs to survive. If the mitochondria malfunction during pregnancy and fail to produce the proper amount of electricity needed for cellular survival, preeclampsia can develop.

The placenta is an organ of pregnancy that requires a lot of energy in order to function properly. Over the past 30 years or so, mitochondrial abnormalities have been a focus in the scientific research as a major contributor of placental dysfunction. Coenzyme Q10 is an electron donator that can provide a nutritional source of electricity to mitochondria that are malfunctioning in pregnant women with preeclampsia symptoms.

Coenzyme Q10 Safety During Pregnancy

Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10,  ubiquinol,  or ubiquinone, is a substance that the human body needs in order to produce energy. It is present throughout the body, thus the name “ubiquinone” (due to its ubiquitous presence), but it is found at the highest concentrations in the heart, the kidneys, and in the liver.

Recently, studies have shown that Coenzyme Q10 can be used to prevent preeclampsia as well as to treat this disorder. Scientists have noted that CoQ10 supplementation is not only helpful in the prevention and treatment of preeclampsia but also to prevent threatened miscarriage as well. So this is a supplement that has a lot of potential to be beneficial during pregnancy for both mother and child.

High Risk Preeclampsia: Home Remedy

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-related disorder that’s characterized by the sudden onset of high blood pressure and high levels of protein in the urine. Preeclampsia usually begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy and in severe cases, red blood cells may be broken down, the platelet count may be lowered, and the liver and kidneys may begging to malfunction. Pregnant women with preeclampsia may experience inflammation, shortness of breath due to fluid in the lungs, and visual disturbances. If preeclampsia is left untreated, it progresses to eclampsia, which is an emergency situation that may involve seizures or even death.

High blood pressure during pregnancy is one of the main causes of death in both mothers and infants. Some scientists have theorized that abnormal placentation may cause blood vessel dysfunction that’s responsible for the symptoms of preeclampsia. The mitochondria in trophoblast cells, in particular, have been cited as an important focus in normal placentation because mitochondria produce energy in these trophoblast cells. If mitochondria malfunction and produce higher levels of damaging free radicals than energy, preeclampsia symptoms may develop. Coenzyme Q10 plays an important role in the electron transport chain and energy production in the mitochondria. Thus, this supplement has become a focus for a number of scientists who are looking for a cure for preeclampsia.

CoQ10: How to Prevent Preeclampsia

Women who are at an increased risk of preeclampsia or eclampsia should consider taking 200 mg of Coenzyme Q10 daily after 20 weeks of pregnancy until the birth of their baby. Studies have observed women at high risk of preeclampsia to observe the effects of coenzyme Q10 on the final outcome of their pregnancy. In one study, 235 women with high risk of preeclampsia were assigned to either a placebo group or a group that would receive 200 mg per day of coenzyme Q10. In the group of high-risk women who received a placebo, 25.6% developed preeclampsia. In the group of high-risk women who received coenzyme Q10 supplements at 200 mg per day, only 14.4% of women developed preeclampsia.

Animal studies have also examined the role of CoQ10 as natural treatment for preeclampsia. These studies, like the human studies noted above, showed that coenzyme Q10 was able successfully treat preeclampsia symptoms while improving the function of mitochondria in the placenta.

Coenzyme Q10 to Prevent Preeclampsia and Promote Liver Health During Pregnancy

Animal studies have shown that CoQ10 has a protective effect on the liver in pregnant animals. Coenzyme Q10 supplementation exerts its protective effect against preeclampsia liver symptoms by decreasing liver cell death and by reducing the oxidative stress in liver tissues.

Coenzyme Q10 and the Vitamin K2 / Menaquinone-7 / MK-7 Connection

If you're at high risk of developing preeclampsia, consider taking a vitamin K2 / MK-7 supplement. Both coenzyme Q10 and vitamin K2 have been removed to a great extent from the food supply in countries growing genetically modified plants. Both CoQ10 and Menaquinone are "quinones" that are produced through the Shikimate Pathway in normal, healthy, non-GMO plants. GMO plants are specifically modified genetically to go through the Basic Shikimate Pathway that produces CoQ10 and Menaquinone-7 / Vitamin K2. A deficiency of vitamin K2 has been strongly correlated with all forms of vascular disease in non-pregnant humans so it stands to reason that a lack of vitamin K2 would play a strong role in the development of preeclampsia as well via its role in ensuring that calcium is placed in the bones and teeth rather than clogging up the arteries and blood vessels. Note that vitamin K2 deficiency also plays a role in cancer and administration of vitamin K2 can cure leukemia, lymphoma, and bone cancers as well as reproductive organ cancers via its role in promoting the healthy absorption of iodine. Vitamin K2 is a quinone that can reduce preeclampsia naturally by moving calcium to its proper location in the body. Calcium clogs up blood vessels when the body is vitamin K2 deficiency. This causes problems like high blood pressure as well as varicose veins or even vascular dementia. But it only takes 6 weeks of vitamin K2 supplementation to move calcium out of the blood vessels and into bones and teeth. Combine coenzyme Q10 200 mg, vitamin K2 (at 200 mcg per day) with regular sunlight exposure (sans the sunscreen) and iodine supplementation (take Lugol's iodine 2% at 50 mg per day or 20 drops) to experience the full healing benefits for these nutrients.

The AlivenHealthy Living Database is the tool that Lydian and I use to organize the data that we find while researching cures for diseases each day. Big Pharma, Big Food, and Big Ag work hard to hide the cures for diseases as well as the underlying causes of major diseases to maintain their profits. So it's hard for the average person to find scientific data about cures for disease even though the data exists! So, when Lydi and I find a cure for disease in the scientific literature or if we find anecdotal reports of disease cures that have worked for other people, we compile this information in our Living Database. Recently, we made this database available to the public via subscription so that more people could find links to studies and reports of cures for major as well as minor and even rare diseases.
