Carthamus tinctorius is a good choice as a carrier oil for other essential oils for hair loss because it has the ability to boost hair growth through several mechanisms of action in androgenic alopecia.

Carthamus tinctorius: Natural Treatment for Androgenic Alopecia

Carthamus tinctorius L. / Safflower Seed Oil is a Thai herbal remedy for androgenic alopecia that works by inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase in the scalp. Scientific studies have looked at extracts of this herbal remedy both in test tubes and in the living body to see how they work to regrow hair.

Carthamus tinctorius: Mechanism of Action

Carthamus tinctorius works through a variety of different hair growth-boosting actions. It works primarily by promoting the proliferation of Dermal Papilla Cells and the production of keratinocytes. But it also stimulates the hair-growth promoting genes such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and keratinocyte growth factor. And at the same time, it suppresses the expression of growth factor beta-1, a hair loss-related gene. As such, Carthamus tinctorius might be useful as a natural treatment for hair loss caused by genetics.

Safflower oil / Carthamus tinctorius contains fibroblast growth factor (FGF9), a substance that participates in the regeneration of hair follicles and that also plays an important role in wound healing and bone development. In scientific studies, Carthamus tinctorius-derived FGF9 produced thicker hair after only 15 days of treatment in animal models of alopecia. In this experiment, Carthamus tinctorius was able to spur new hair growth by upregulating beta-catenin expression.
