Studies show that Pueraria thomsonii (which is also known as Pueraria montana var. chinensis), works through a similar mechanism of action as Minoxidil 2%, but Pueraria thomsonii has an advantage in that this Minoxidil substitute works without causing serious side effects.This plant-based medicine, Pueraria thomsonii has a potent inhibitory activity against 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion from testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In one scientific study, a 50% extract of Pueraria Flos / Pueraria thomsonii was able to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase by 50%. It was more potent than the roots of Pueraria lobata, though both plant extracts are able to inhibit the negative effects of DHT on hair follicles.
Scientists determined that saponins such as soyasaponin I and kaikasaponin III were the active components that reduced hair follicle shrinkage through inhibition of DHT.
Pueraria thomsoni is a medicinal herb for androgenic alopecia can also be used as an herbal remedy for epilepsy. It can be used as a fever reducer, as an anti-diarrheal, and as an expectorant.
