Fibromyalgia, Rhabdomyolysis, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Post-Vaccine Side Effects Caused by Nutritional Deficiency
Fibromyalgia has been closely linked to low levels/deficiencies of vitamin B12 and vitamin B9 (folate/folic acid). Myalgic encephalomyelitis, more commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also is connected to deficiencies in these vitamins, regardless of whether or not it presents with symptoms of fibromyalgia. Deficiencies in these vitamins can lead to increased levels of homocysteine in cerebrospinal fluid and the central nervous system, which can ultimately cause problems like those seen in these two disorders. Therefore, supplementation with vitamin B12 and vitamin B9 can be therapeutic in the treatment of fibromyalgia and CFS.Thiamine, vitamin B1, has also been noted as a potentially important nutrient for patients suffering from fibromyalgia, CFS, and other similar myalgias and muscle problems. Some of the symptoms of thiamine deficiency, including irritability, sleep disturbances, muscle pain and weakness, fatigue, and headaches, closely resemble some of the most common symptoms of these syndromes. Another interesting link is the fact that for many fibromyalgia patients, alcohol exacerbates symptoms. Since alcohol inhibits absorption of thiamine, this suggests that an underlying thiamine deficiency may ultimately be a part of the cause of fibromyalgia. Both vitamin B1 and vitamin B2 (riboflavin) may be beneficial for patients with fibromyalgia since these two vitamins are necessary specifically for nerve conduction, tissue health, and communication between cells.
The scientific literature on rhabdomyolysis and nutritional deficiencies is limited, however based on the nature of this disorder, I believe that it’s likely that the B vitamins that would be useful in the treatment of fibromyalgia would also be valuable for the treatment of rhabdomyolysis. Other myalgias and related muscle problems will likely also benefit from these treatments.
