Paw Paw: A South American Cancer Cure

Only newly diagnosed patients who have not received chemotherapy or radiation should use paw paw as a cancer treatment. It can take longer to see results when using paw paw instead of chemotherapy, but although the process is slower, the side effects of treatment are also minimal and the results are often lasting [1].

While many cancer treatments are best integrated into a full cancer cure protocol, paw paw is best used alone or in tandem only with graviola (Annona muricata), another important herbal remedy for cancer. This is because some other powerful cancer cures may actually work against the action of paw paw and/or graviola [2]. As such, if you plan to use paw paw as a cancer cure, plan ahead accordingly and avoid using other potent cancer cure medicines at the exact same time as paw paw (you may, however, take other medicines either before or after working exclusively with paw paw).

Paw Paw Research and Acetogenins

Dr. Jerry McLaughlin at Purdue University and scientists at the Tepic Institute of Technology (Instituto Technológico de Tepic) in Mexico discovered that the paw paw tree is a source of acetogenins. These acetogenins can be found throughout the paw paw tree in the fruit and seeds, but most prolifically in the twigs. Acetogenins are unique polyketides found only in plants in the Annonaceae family of plants, which includes not only Asimina triloba, but also Annona muricata (graviola). While both of these Annonaceae family plants naturally contain acetogenins, paw paw produces more acetogenins than Annona muriacata. Thus, graviola (also known as Brazilian paw paw) is generally thought to be less potent than paw paw [1][2]. However, it’s also worth noting that although some people believe that the acetogenins in paw paw are similar to those found in graviola, Dr. Laughlin found through his research that the acetogenins produced by these two plants are actually very different. Therefore, the acetogenin-related medicinal actions of these two herbal remedies may ultimately be similarly powerful, but different.

Acetogenins cause cells to produce less energy (or ATP) in the mitochondria. So, when a person takes paw paw for cancer, these acetogenins enter the bloodstream. Most of the acetogenins end up in the cancer cells, but a few may end up in healthy cells. The healthy cells that receive the acetogenins also lower their energy production. This doesn’t permanently harm the healthy cells, but the cancer cells have a huge energy requirement. The acetogenins cause the energy production of cancer cells to decrease precipitously. Ultimately, the cancer cells starve [1].

Researchers in Mexico have also found that certain compounds found in paw paw may be able to encapsulate and “suffocate” cancerous tumors depending on the amount of paw paw that is consumed [2].

Because paw paw may lower ATP production in the mitochondria of healthy cells, people who choose to work with paw paw medicinally may want to consider taking other natural medicines afterwards in order to restore mitochondrial health and energy production. Some examples of specific medicines and nutrients that work to support mitochondrial health include methylene blue with red light therapy, CoQ10, L-carnitine, vitamin K2 (this nutrient can eliminate damaging calcifications even at a cellular level), and Suramin / pine needle extracts, among others.

Other Medicinal Uses of Paw Paw

Paw paw (Asimina triloba) has also been used to treat the following health problems, in addition to acting as a cancer cure:

  • Lice (extracts of paw paw are sometimes included in anti-lice shampoos)
  • Bacterial infections
    • Corynebacterium xerosis
    • Clostridium perfringens
  • Bone loss
  • Constipation
  • Skin problems
    • Boils
    • Ulcers
    • Abscesses

The bark of the paw paw tree is a bitter and has traditionally been used as a tonic; the alkaloid analobine is responsible for the bark’s bitter tonic medicinal actions. Scientific research has found that an alkaloid from the seeds of paw paw, asiminine, is emetic (induced vomiting) and narcotic.

The pawpaw fruit is rich in antioxidants, and contains notable antioxidants like epigallocatechin and p-coumaric acid, among others. The fruit is also rich in both iron and vitamin C, making it a good choice for managing iron-deficiency anemia and health problems that may cause anemia. Pawpaw fruit is also rich in other minerals, including manganese, zinc, copper, and calcium. Its high manganese levels may contribute to possible effects in managing type 2 diabetes and problems with blood sugar control.

How to Take Paw Paw

Paw Paw Dosing and Administration Methods

Paw paw is taken 3 to 4 times a day with food, generally in the form of an herbal extract.

Always take paw paw with food. If you choose to take paw paw on an empty stomach, be aware that it can cause nausea and vomiting. For this reason, it’s always recommended to take paw paw at the same time as a snack or meal.

While most experts recommend taking paw paw only on its own or in combination with Annona muricata, another acetogenin-based cancer treatment, some patients take Asimina triloba in conjunction with beta-glucans as well. Patients who have successfully combined paw paw with beta-glucan therapy typically take the beta-glucans in between the times when the paw paw is taken to avoid overlapping the two medicines.

Paw Paw Contraindications

Paw paw is not a recommended treatment with patients who have lung cancer or brain cancer except under the guidance of a knowledgeable health practitioner [2].
