The Pineal Gland and the Autonomic Nervous System in Autism and ASD

Suramin is a substance that is found naturally in pine needles, particularly in the Pinus strobus pine tree but also in the Pinus palustris or Pinus elliottii and to a lesser extent in Pinus sylvestris. Suramin has been used to cure autism or at least get rid of symptoms for discreet periods of time in clinical trials administered by Dr. Naviaux.
Scientists have found that melatonin plays a protective role on the brain and nervous system. Of particular interest here is the fact that melatonin helps the autonomic nervous system regulate itself while balancing the effects of its two branches: the sympathetic fight-or-flight system and the parasympathetic rest-and-digest system. Unfortunately, a lot of the mainstream “pop” information out there in regard to the autonomic nervous system right now isn’t up to date in regard to the science regarding this part of the human nervous system. There are not just two, but three branches of the autonomic nervous system, for example. This is important in regard to autism as well as to vaccine syndromes, cancer, and autoimmune diseases and more because by understanding each of the three branches of the autonomic nervous system we become privy to a model by which we can treat or even cure some of these health problems.

Polyvagal Theory and the Three Branches of the Autonomic Nervous System

Dr. Stephen Porges is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist who developed an important theory known as Polyvagal Theory. This theory asserts that there are more than two branches to the autonomic nervous system. According to his theory, the third branch of the autonomic nervous system is actually a second branch of the parasympathetic nervous system.

The autonomic nervous system is the unconscious part of our human existence that becomes accessible to the conscious mind and to conscious control through healing trance states, hypnotic states, lucid dreaming, alpha brain wave states, sudden insights, or during sleep. In conventional medicine, the autonomic nervous system is often overlooked and doctors are taught that there are only two branches to this system. According to conventional medicine, the two branches of the autonomic nervous system include:
  • The Sympathetic Nervous System (which deals with fight-or-flight situations)
  • The Parasympathetic Nervous System (which deals with rest-and-digest situations)
But craniotherapy specialists, trauma-informed therapists, and other bodyworkers and alternative healers are taught that there are three branches to this system:
  1. The Sympathetic Nervous System (fight-or-flight response)
  2. The Parasympathetic Nervous System (freeze or play-dead response)
  3. The Parasympathetic Nervous System (socialization / rest-and-digest response)
According to the Polyvagal Theory, the third branch of the autonomic nervous system involves a specific response to extreme danger or perceived danger. This response involves a "freeze" or "play-dead" response that causes total or partial shut-down of the body and/or the mind. The appearance of this play-dead response might resemble autism sometimes or it might look like a comatose state (as in resignation syndrome). But it can also look like the various vaccine syndromes that have been described, as fibromyalgia, or as any number of autoimmune diseases or chronic fatigue syndrome depending on the part of the body that responds most forcefully to the real or perceived danger.

The “freeze” response is what happens automatically when the real or perceived danger seems so overwhelming that a “fight-or-flight” sympathetic nervous system response will not suffice to protect the person’s life or body.

The Sympathetic Nervous System

The sympathetic nervous system is the part of us that regulates the fight-or-flight response as well as alert states of mind. It is made up of a switchboard of “ganglia” or nerve bundles that line up on either side of the vertebrae going down the spine. The sympathetic nerves travel alongside every single blood vessel in the body to regulate whether the blood vessels are dilated and flowing or constricted. As such, the sympathetic nervous system plays a powerful role in the development of pain-related issues like trigger point tension in muscles. By shutting down the blood supply or microcirculation to certain small or large areas of the body in response to stress, the Sympathetic Nervous System is able to communicate with the conscious mind about the “felt sense” or some form of “intuition” about the environment. A number of bodyworkers view these painful trigger points as a form of communication from the unconscious mind (which is roughly equivalent, physically, to the autonomic nervous system).

Interestingly, the vocabulary of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, one of the most well-known mental health issues caused by trauma exposure, includes the word “trigger” to describe some object, experience, or situation that activates the “remembering” of the trauma as the feelings associated with the traumatic event. While the actual memory of the trauma remains buried and separate from the feelings associated with the memory, people who are triggered automatically experience the present-tense situation as a blow-by-blow replay of the trauma in the past except without any conscious memory-input to ground the feelings. This blow-by-blow replay is experienced as feelings that are alien and strange and worst of all, completely lacking in any meaning.

A person who has been traumatized by something that’s normally mundane in daily life like a doctor’s appointment that caused the feeling of extreme fear about health and well-being, or falling asleep at the wheel of a car and then waking in the midst of a dream to find oneself careening toward another car, might not recognize what’s happened to them as something worthy of a “diagnosis” of trauma. But it doesn’t matter how other people might rate the experience. All that matters is whether the body experienced trauma as a feeling of overwhelm and danger that was powerful enough to warrant either the fight-or-flight reflex or a freeze response (or both). If the body experienced the event as traumatic and if the person was not able to run away, fight, or attempt to escape from the perceived danger, that moment is cast into a mold and becomes frozen in time like a feeling-cicle. Though the memory of the event exists and we have access to it, the feelings associated with the event become separated from it. Free-floating feeling of terror can then emerge into our daily life, seemingly from out of nowhere. Children with autism may react suddenly to a “trigger” through a behavior, but they may also react to “triggers” through the production of painful “trigger points” in the fascia and muscle tissue. These painful trigger points can then cause physical symptoms of disease, headaches or migraines, and a variety of other issues that ultimately derive from trauma.

Medical doctors who study the Sympathetic Nervous System use procaine, the first generation anesthetic ever developed to inject areas around the ganglia and certain sympathetic nerve fibers to open microcirculation and release trauma.. This type of medical treatment is known as Neural Therapy and though it is technically a branch of conventional medicine, Neural Therapists are rarely given referrals by other doctors so they are virtually unknown in developed countries. Read more about Neural Therapy for vaccine syndromes, Bell's Palsy and more here. Nonetheless, Neural Therapy has been used to cure diseases like cancer as well as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) through nothing more than the injection of procaine at specific locations on the body that are roughly equivalent to acupuncture points.

That being said, Neural Therapy can release the “trigger points” and the physical manifestations of trauma, but this form of therapy doesn’t allow the patient to rejoin the memory of a trauma with the felt-sense of the traumatic memory. As such, meaning is still lacking in those who have been overwhelmed by trauma (most of us have a number of traumas that we experience throughout any given year). Without a sense of meaning, trauma traps us in a loop that resembles hell in many respects. When a traumatic event becomes meaningful though, the trauma is no longer traumatic but rather an important resource from which we can draw strength and intuition.

Psilocybin is one of the best medicines for trauma because it allows the human body to rebalance, but many macrodoses as well as microdosing is necessary in order to restore balance to the autonomic nervous system. We usually recommend that people do a “psilocybin year” where they take 1 full dose of mushrooms every 3-7 days. Progress begins after the first dose, but as traumatic memories become integrated, new ones come to the surface. It’s important for people to “stay close to the mushrooms” until they reach a plateau with the treatment and begin to feel again. Click here to read more about psilocybin for birth trauma and more

The Parasympathetic Nervous System / The Freeze or Play-Dead Response

Both branches of the parasympathetic nervous system involve the vagus nerve as the transmitting structure that takes information to the organs from the brain and away from the organs back to the brain. In contrast to the nerve fibers of the sympathetic nervous system which travels alongside every blood vessel in the body to feed the organs and every tissue that needs oxygenation and waste removal, and the fact that the sympathetic nervous system involves only the spinal cord and the lower levels of the brain, the vagus nerve travels from the brain into the gut to innervate every organ in the body. The word “vagus” is related to the word “vagabond” because of its wandering nature in the viscera.   According to Polyvagal Theory the dorsal vagus nerve causes vertebrates to “freeze” or “play dead” when they are in danger. As such, this part of the parasympathetic nervous system works in tight unison with the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic nervous system. A gazelle that is captured at the neck by a big cat may instantly and reflexively pretend to be dead. And the big cat may release its prey because of this play-dead response thinking that the gazelle is sick. This freeze response has its place as a life-saving reflex that functions as a part of the parasympathetic nervous system, but it also functions to protect our bodies from feeling the sharp sting of death when death may be imminent. In humans, the freeze response can also look like autism, autoimmunity, or chronic illness that has no explanation.   Dr. Naviaux is a researcher who has worked with Suramin for autism. Suramin is a drug derived from Pinus strobus, one of several pine-tree derived medicines that target microcirculation and the sympathetic nervous system to bring autistic children out of this freeze / play-dead response. The Cell Danger Response is essentially the cellular equivalent to the Play Dead Response of the autonomic nervous system. Below, we discuss the Resignation Syndrome and the sleeping refugee children in Sweden who fall into a coma after learning about their family’s imminent deportation. Serious, life-threatening danger causes a physiological and emotional fear response that can hijack a child’s autonomic nervous system whether they are being exposed to an emotional / psychological danger or a physical / toxicological / pathogenic danger that is too big for them to overcome using the sympathetic fight-or-flight system. The experience of the sleeping refugee in Sweden brings to mind accounts of soul loss in the oldest model of medicine known to man: shamanic medicine. When a person is in a freeze / play-dead state, they are dissociated from their present-tense experience. In those with autism or ASD, imbalances in the autonomic nervous system can cause a chronic “freeze / play-dead” state and an ongoing state of chronic, low-level re-traumatization due to an inability to process daily life. Soul loss can be treated using a soul retrieval by an experienced shamanic healer to restore vital life force to children who have autism.    Just to be clear, we’re not talking about underlying causes or why children have these autonomic nervous system imbalances, but it’s important to note that the following pine tree essential oils work directly with microcirculation and the autonomic nervous system through various mechanisms of action to restore balance:

One of the most difficult things for people to understand about the idea of trauma and autism is the fact that trauma is not something caused by the mind. Trauma is not something that’s “all in one’s head”. It is also not entirely a physical phenomenon though either. You might be able to treat the physical manifestations of autism and the physical experience of being triggered using a pill, an essential oil, Neural Therapy, or any number of medicines, but the important thing that has to happen in order for symptoms to disappear completely is meaning

We can look at the idea of “meaning” as something that we experience mentally as a thought, but in fact, meaning is something that we “feel” in the body in relation to something. Meaning is derived from a back-and-forth dialogue between the right side of the brain and the left side of the brain. But meaning is more than just a physical, material event involving the brain. Meaning is a complex human experience that involves the human body and brain as just one ingredient in the recipe.

If, as a parent, you’ve lived for a period of time with your child’s diagnosis of autism and little to no hope for a cure, it’s likely that you’ve experienced many traumas that have caused you to dissociate from your core self. As your vital force is fractured and sent into other realms of consciousness, it becomes more and more difficult to experience meaning. So the experience of being alive as the parent of an autistic child becomes something that might seem meaningful in a cerebral way – it might be a thought that you discipline yourself to have, but in the felt-sense of bodily sensations, it is extremely difficult to experience a powerful sense of meaningfulness without having a way to process trauma. Thus, the concept of “meaning” is literally “meaningless” until a parent works with a type of trauma treatment such as one of the sacred indigenous medicines to overcome painful blocks that stand in the way of day-to-day life and the experience of meaning. If the parent can’t access meaning, autistic children will have difficulty finding meaning by themselves. The feeling of randomness and meaningless transforming into a meaningful, important token of wisdom is powerful and life-changing for most people.

The Parasympathetic Nervous System / Socialization / Rest-and Digest Response

This second branch of the parasympathetic nervous system is activated when we socialize with others in enjoyable, non-stressful ways. This part of the parasympathetic nervous system is deactivated or imbalanced in regard to the other two branches of the autonomic nervous system in those with autism or autism spectrum disorder. The socialization / rest-and-digest state of being involves relaxation and engagement in the present-tense as well as a sense of openness and feelings of safety. It is associated with things like high heart-rate variability, good digestion, and the ability to use logic as well as symbolism to think and communicate.  That being said, the more traumatized the social milieu within which we interact with people, the harder it is to experience pleasurable socialization / rest-and-digest situations. This problem contributes to general malaise especially in general who self-regulate via the energy-dynamic within which they are placed. Social media and situations like driving in heavy traffic cause people to dehumanize others and inflict their trauma on others. Essentially, we pass the trauma around like an infectious disease. Because there are no rites of passage or situations that regularly give us permission to release trauma, we are quickly overburdened by trauma as parents and children become enmeshed in this web through the rest-and-digest system which is specifically attuned to the social environment. Conventional medicine asserts that our physical bodies are not whole. Conventional medicine divides the body into organs and systems. And conventional medicine certainly does not espouse the idea that we are connected to other human beings in any meaningful way. We are self-enclosed units who are entirely at the whim of the universe regarding the connections that we make with other people. Yet science has actually proven otherwise. And today, it’s possible for people to experience their connection to the Universe using a variety of techniques.  Most people have been so brainwashed to believe that they are disconnected and alone that there’s no need to even discuss it. We need to heal ourselves before we can make meaningful connections with other people. But what if the meaningful connections that we have to other human beings are one of the most powerful sources of healing?  People who are in a state of imbalance in regard to the autonomic nervous system may find it hard to go into this rest-and-digest / socialization state. Socialization, after all, helps engage this system, but only the type of socialization that feels safe and fun. Autistic children struggle to find this state of being. Parents of autistic children also struggle to find this state. Parents and autistic children then reinforce each other’s sense of aloneness. Socialization is one of the biggest challenges that ASD children face. Nonetheless, there are other ways to activate this branch of the autonomic nervous system that don’t involve socialization and we discuss those methods and treatments here. Above, we list pine tree essential oils that have a strong impact on the autonomic nervous system. While Dr. Naviaux has worked extensively with the Pinus strobus-derived Suramin as a substance that helps cells that have shut down or gone into the “freeze response” due to high levels of toxins, heavy metals, or pathogen exposure, Russian scientists have worked extensively with Pinus palustris and Pinus elliottii essential oil (also known as medicinal turpentine) as an effective treatment for sexual dysfunction and infertility. In this article, we explain how to use medicinal turpentine in the form of emulsion baths as a treatment for sexual dysfunction, but this bath-immersion treatment could be modified as a natural treatment for autism to enhance microcirculation by balancing the activity of the three branches of the autonomic nervous system. Turpentine emulsion baths should not be superheated in the same way in children with autism, for example. Instead, do an emulsion bath at a comfortably warm temperature for children.   Though sexual dysfunction may not seem to be related in any way to autism, proper sexual function requires a special state of mind---the socialization-rest-and-digest state of mind. Proper sexual function usually requires a proper context and it is undeniably a social activity (though it is an intimate activity, it is still social). Most men and women won't get sexually aroused if you say, "Become aroused now." Rather sexual arousal requires adults to release our normal daily state of consciousness, go into a state of relaxation, and we often use context (a dark room, candles, music etc.) to make that happen. So, while it may seem strange to compare sexual dysfunction to autism, the relationship between these two ideas has to do one one level with state of mind and physical relaxation – the healing trance state. Also, the idea that certain natural treatments for sexual dysfunction overlap with certain natural treatments for autism is thought provoking and validating.  The sacral chakra is associated with the reproductive organs and reproductive hormone balance. Reproductive hormones control a number of surprising functions in the body that are not remotely sexual including bronchial tube dilation and constriction, for example. In other words, reproductive hormone levels alter breath and breathing. Breath and breathing is the bodily function that is most directly related to our experience of emotions. Every emotion, however complex, has a breath pattern that causes the emotion to manifest as a physical sensation in our bodies.

The Pineal Gland and Pine Tree Medicines

Those who have some knowledge of synchronicity in nature might get a shiver when they realize that the pineal gland resembles the shape of a pine cone, from which it gets its name. The resemblance of the pineal gland to pine cones echoes the resemblance of the almond-shaped amygdala and its need for and use of amygdalin, a natural substance that was discovered by Dr. Sugiura (the creator of chemotherapy) as a cure for cancer many years ago. Dr. Sugiura’s studies and his results at curing cancer in lab animals (cancer cure rate - 100%) were covered up while Big Pharma seized the opportunity to market chemotherapy (cancer cure rate - 2-3%) to the masses instead as a much more profitable medicine. Amygdalin containing-seeds are almond-shaped.   Amygdalin (also known as vitamin B17 or sometimes “Laetrile”) has been scandalized and generally shunned by the scientific community, but our team has done quite a lot of research to find that this substance is present in many of the same plants that regulate the endocrine system and neurotransmitters. These plants include:
  • Plants in the Rosaceae family (especially the Prunus genus)
  • Plants in the Poaceae family (grasses like wheat)
  • Plants in the Fabaceae family (legumes such as fava beans, soy, Mucuna pruriens, Pueraria mirifica, and more)
  • Apple Seeds
  • Watermelon Seeds
  • Grape seeds
  • Flaxseed
  • Manioc
Most of the seeds or fruit “kernels” that contain high levels of amygdalin are almond shaped as we mentioned above. And the amygdala in the brain is also almond-shaped. The amygdala regulates how we express and process fear and anger. It does not manufacture these emotions, but rather this structure helps us decide what to do in response to them.

The shape of the amygdala and the shape of the food-items or natural herbs that can be used to heal the amygdala resemble each other which is a definition of “synchronicity” in nature.

Interestingly, the pineal gland is a pine-cone shaped gland and, as it turns out, it is responsive to pine needle essential oils like Pinus strobus, Pinus palustris, and Pinus elliottii to name just a few. The pineal gland produces melatonin, a substance that is dysregulated or imbalanced in patients with autism and so, it shouldn’t be surprising that pine needle essential oils can help regulate melatonin levels. But this is where we’re going to tie the discussion regarding soul loss more tightly into this narrative.

Rene Descartes, of course, believed that the pineal gland was the seat of the soul. The pineal gland is the part of the body that allows us to receive and understand environmental inputs about space and time.

Autism and Old Souls / Autism and Soul Loss

In tribal culture, the shaman or medicine man or woman is often chosen because of an illness that he or she manifests as a child. Epilepsy is a common disease that triggers the tribe to identify a child as a shaman or rather as a traveler between worlds in many tribal societies. But I believe that autism may be another disease that would look very different in a tribal context than it does in the modern industrial world. Autistic individuals in tribal societies would very likely be identified as travelers between worlds—those who, with training, would be worthy of acting as shaman or medicine men/women. Needless to say, there's a link between autism and epilepsy and we're going to expand on that here.  Some people believe that autism is a disease that comes to old souls who arrive on earth to teach younger souls about important things like patience, for example. Certainly, I ascribe to the idea that anyone who comes to this planet and who develops a disease that they confront in order to heal from it, is teaching the rest of us something we all need to know. Children who are born with a disease or who develop a disease like cancer or autism shortly after birth are particularly special though. And since the rhetoric exists regarding autism and old souls, and since I ascribe to this possibility, I have to mention it here. But I also need to mention the idea of autism and soul loss as another soul-related concept that should definitely be linked tightly to autism.  The pineal gland is associated with a mystical structure in humans known as the third eye. In other words, many people believe that the pineal gland is the third eye. Indeed, some scientists believe that the pineal gland was once a light-sensing structure like our two eyeballs are now. So, there are some great thinkers who have acknowledged that the pineal gland is associated with the soul and our spiritual experience of being human. Soul loss is a state of dis-ease according to shamanism, a legitimate system of medicine that has been used since antiquity in all cultures and all societies at one time or another. As a dis-ease state, soul loss has the following symptoms:
  • Dissociation
  • A feeling of being disengaged
  • Feelings of emptiness
  • Chronic depression
  • Suicidal tendencies
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Immune system dysfunction (autism, autoimmunity, etc.)
  • A complicated grief response
  • Addictions
In soul loss, the person who has lost a part of the soul, spends an inordinate amount of energy looking for that part of themselves on an unconscious level. If we regard the autonomic nervous system as a part of our bodies that connects us to the collective unconscious or other states of existence beyond the material state and if we regard the pineal gland as the seat or throne upon which the soul is seated, then it might make sense to treat a person with autism by targeting the pineal gland using natural substances that heal this structure. As we’ve already discussed though, in order to fully heal, a person who has experienced soul loss and trauma must find meaning in what they’ve experienced. The process of finding meaning requires “soul searching” in one form or another. Usually, someone other than the patient who has experienced soul loss does the shamanic soul retrieval ceremony to find the lost soul parts.  I could go into an extremely subjective discussion at this point and expand on shamanism as a model of medicine and how to seek out a shamanic medicine practitioner to do soul retrievals on autistic patients, but I think that many autistic patients need medicinal agents for their bodies as well as for their souls. So, having noted this important model of medicine– shamanism –I’m going to return now to our discussion regarding autism in terms of its physical manifestations. I have witnessed miraculous results from using shamanic medicine so it’s easy for me to appreciate the value of this system, but I know that most of our readers are coming directly from their doctor’s offices after going through a difficult set of experiences that led them to question the status quo and they aren't quite ready to jump onto the crazy wagon and start working with something as strange and seemingly foreign as shamanic medicine. So let’s not wander to far into the idea of shamanism but let’s still acknowledge the possibility that this model could be helpful to some readers and go ahead and tie it into the science that exists at the relevant points so that we can make a bridge between what we know through observation and what seems to be true based on anecdotal reports of healing.

Pineal Production of Melatonin in ASD

Let’s say that the pineal gland is the seat of the soul. And an ailing pineal gland that is small or that is somehow physiologically dysregulated plays a role in causing the diseases known as autism or ASD. The pineal gland plays a vital role in circadian rhythms. It helps us stay connected to the world in terms of time and space.

Autism and the Pineal Gland Blood Supply

The pineal gland, unlike other parts of the brain, is not separated from the rest of the body via the blood brain barrier. In fact, the only other organ structure that receives a more prolific blood supply is the kidneys. So, if there are toxins in the blood or pathogens, heavy metals, or any other physical pathogen in the blood that is toxic to the pineal gland, it will inevitably reach the “seat of the soul”. It makes sense that the pineal gland would want to have this direct connection to the blood supply what with the role it plays in the body of making the connection between our spiritual selves and our physical selves. This direct-connection to the bloodstream allows the pineal gland to be in-the-know about what's happening in this river of life that feeds every cell in our bodies.

The Autonomic Nervous System, the Pineal Gland and Autism

The pineal gland is connected by nerve tissues to the autonomic nervous system, the part of our bodies that works with “unconscious” tasks that are vital to keeping us alive. The Superior Cervical Ganglion is the name of the structure that connects the pineal gland to the sympathetic, fight-or-flight branch of the autonomic nervous system. It is this sympathetic fight-or-flight system that allows us to sense danger. It is this part of the nervous system that allows us to feel when someone is staring at us from behind without looking. And the Superior Cervical Ganglion is basically just a bulge of nerve tissues that are attached to the sympathetic nerves that come out of the Thoracic 1, Thoracic 2, and/or Thoracic 3 vertebrae at the base of the neck. The words ganglion and ganglia essentially just mean an area of a nerve that's a bit bigger than the rest of the nerve because it serves a special physiological function. A ganglia is a bit bigger usually because it serves as a sort of an "on-off switch" for the sympathetic nervous system nerves. So the Superior Cervical Ganglion is the only ganglion in the sympathetic nervous system that innervates the head and the neck as a sympathetic nervous system switch. It should be noted that this humble little nerve ganglion is the primary connection between the pineal gland and the sympathetic nervous system.

The pineal gland is also connected to the parasympathetic nervous system and to the vagus nerve via the pterygopalatine ganglia and the otic ganglia. The pterygopalatine ganglion (also known as the sphenopalatine ganglion) is one of only four small parasympathetic ganglia that are found in the head. It is located behind the cheekbone and though it is mostly identified as a parasympathetic ganglion it also carries some sympathetic and sensory nerve fibers to the nose, the mouth, and the pharynx. It is vital to the normal functioning of the face. Patients with pterygopalatine ganglion issues may experience severe facial pain, hypertension, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), or migraine headaches that can be treated through stimulation of the pterygopalatine nerve using things like red light or low-voltage electrical stimulation among other things. A number of electrical devices have been devised to produce electrical stimulation of this nerve at ultra-low frequencies and some of these might benefit autistic patients too.

The otic ganglion plays a role in salivary gland secretion (which impacts first-stage digestion) and chewing.

Tying It All Together: The Pineal Autonomic Nerves, Blood Vessels, and Melatonin Secretion

In this article, we started out by talking about melatonin and the pineal gland and we meandered into a forest of pine trees and pine needle essential oils in a discussion of the autonomic nervous system in autism. There, in that forest, we discovered a relationship between the medicine men / shaman of tribal societies from our distant past to consider the connection between autism and old souls, by reflecting on the position of Rene Descartes on the pineal gland as the seat of the soul. But while we believe that autistic children are old souls, and that many of them might have been destined to become shaman if society were organized in a different way, the real test of a shaman is to overcome his or her own disease. In other words, if an autistic child is truly a traveler between worlds, the goal is for the physician to heal thyself. Parents often act as an autistic child’s greatest advocate and most important resource for healing. Parents act as shaman and healers for children with ASD. As such, parent often have to begin the journey to healing ASD by healing themselves using things like sacred indigenous medicines And so we’ve presented the idea that autism is a situation involving soul loss. Indeed, Dr. Naviaux, the doctor who has studied Suramin for autism, a natural component found in many types of pine trees, has made a connection on a cellular level between resignation syndrome in the refugee children of Sweden who face deportation and autistic children. This pine-tree derived substance, Suramin, is one of the only substances that has been able to get autistic children to snap out of their state of disconnection from the rest of the world, their state of soul loss, so we should talk a bit more about that.   Though parents have had success treating autism with Suramin in clinical trials, there is no guarantee that this medicine will ever actually become available to the public. But parents can use natural Suramin in pine needle essential oils as a safe alternative.  Pine trees, by the way, contain other substances too, such as shikhimic acid that was once used to cure the plague and that inhibits the replication of viruses. Shikhimic acid was the natural substance upon which the synthetic drug Tamiflu was modeled after. It’s very possible that there are other important substances found in a simple pine tree that can be used to cure autism too. And it’s possible the work of the pine tree happens in the pineal gland at the seat of the soul, a tiny rice-sized structure that is shaped roughly like a pine cone.  The pineal gland is connected to our endocrine system, which is rather like a sophisticated liquid-state nervous system that flows in the bloodstream. The pineal gland is also connected to the three branches of the autonomic nervous system, the part of our physical body that deals with unconscious activity such as the functioning of organs as well as unconscious perceptions and the “felt-sense” as we discussed earlier. The pineal helps make the connection between the autonomic nervous system's sensing abilities that make our bodies unconsciously aware of danger even before our minds are consciously aware of danger. So now, we’re going to connect this information about the pineal gland, pine tree essential oils (Suramin and shikhimic acid), and melatonin so that readers can better understand why and how to use pine needle essential oil to heal the pineal gland and encourage the return of soul parts to the body.  Autonomic nerves from the pineal gland terminate on the blood vessels. Visualize, if you will, the pineal gland as a tiny pine-cone in the brain with tiny nerve fibers that come out of the structure to meet with the blood vessels. Inside the blood vessels flow hormones from the endocrine glands that can communicate with the pineal gland via these nerve fibers, creating a circuit with the autonomic nervous system. Messages from organs and glands that are flowing in the blood via hormones and neurotransmitter secretions are translated and communicated to the brain and body by the pineal gland via the autonomic nervous system and vice versa. The pineal gland thus, allows us to sense the world unconsciously. Our bodies know that it’s day or night even if we're consciously not aware of the time.   Scientists have found that autonomic nerves don’t actually enter the human pineal gland, but rather they enter the meningeal tissues of the pineal gland. Nerves emanating from the pineal are both myelinated and unmyelinated and they form terminals around small arteries, veins, and capillaries. Scientists don’t yet understand why the pineal gland, as the regulator of our circadian rhythms plays such an important role in blood supply in terms of constriction or dilation of blood vessels, but Neural Therapists, those doctors who work on the fringes of conventional medical, know that constriction and dilation of blood vessels determines which organs are strong and which ones are weak. And cranial therapists and other bodyworkers know that constriction of blood vessels can cause pain in the form of trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points can cause fibromyalgia-type pain, for example, that might be diagnosed by doctors as an “autoimmune” phenomena. So it isn’t hard to appreciate the fact that a malfunctioning pineal gland can cause a variety of different symptoms of disease from generalized, inexplicable pain to odd secretions of body fluids, cognitive dysfunction, insomnia, and mental and mood disorders including autism.   Pine tree essential oils can be used to heal the pineal gland through the interaction of substances such as suramin and shikhimic acid and microvessels and capillaries in the skin. Pine tree essential oils including Pinus palustris or Pinus elliottii (also known as pure gum spirits of turpentine) have a demonstrable effect on microcirculation in the body and through emulsion baths (that are usually administered daily over the course of 12 to 15 days) to permanently restore microcirculation to blood vessels that are under the governance of the pineal gland and the autonomic nervous system.   Melatonin levels are at the crux of determining circadian rhythms in humans. Melatonin is a substance that the pineal gland emits to let our bodies know that it's nighttime. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) is the daytime counterpart to melatonin that let’s our bodies know that it's daytime.  Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methhydroxytryptamine) is related to a number of other neurotransmitters through a common molecule of tryptamine. Tryptamine is the substance that inspired the word “tripping” by hippies in regard to psychedelic substances that interact with serotonin receptors, but all of us need tryptamine molecules in the form of melatonin and serotonin in order to understand our position in space and time.  Tryptamine hallucinogens like psilocybin help us gain full access to other worlds and other planes of reality. Tryptamines allow us to connect to other human beings in meaningful ways such that we can empathize and feel what other people feel. But melatonin and serotonin help us gain our footing here on earth by providing our bodies with information regarding the time of day and our location in space. Without proper levels of melatonin and serotonin to keep us oriented, we may literally lose our souls.  Melatonin and serotonin and the proper functioning of the pineal gland helps us achieve trance states as well as those physiological-socialization-and-rest-and-digest states of existence that happen when we are socializing with people we enjoy. Without proper functioning of the pineal gland, our minds and bodies have trouble processing trauma and stressful events. And we know now through studies into trauma that stress can dissociate into two component parts: memories that have been divorced from their emotional “felt-sense” content. Our traumatic thoughts/memories are placed in the mind while our feelings lodge themselves somewhere in the autonomic nervous system According to this current discussion regarding the pineal gland, melatonin, serotonin, trance states, and autism spectrum disorders, we might view autism and ASD as a situation in which a person can’t process any form of stress because said person cannot go into a trance state or an alpha brain wave state on a regular basis. And the inability to achieve a trance state has to do with a malfunctioning pineal gland and dysregulated melatonin production among other things.

What triggers autism according to this model?

Based on Dr. Naviaux’s studies, the trigger could be a traumatic event. It could also be exposure to pathogens, toxins, heavy metals, or anything that overwhelms the immune system causing the pineal gland to initiate the Cell Danger Response or, in other words, the “Freeze” or “Play Dead” response according to Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory.

Pharmacological Suramin Autism Alternative: Pine Needle Essential Oil

The Suramin used by Dr. Naviaux in his autism trials is derived from pine needles. In other words, natural Suramin is found in pine needle essential oils as well as in teas. The most widely known method for taking pine needle essential oil internally involves the combination of refined sugar with 100% pure gum spirits of turpentine.   This pine needle protocol has been described in depth by Dr. Jennifer Daniels and many people use it to cure Candida infection, cancer, and autoimmune disease. Read more here about the protocols for using pine needle essential oil and diseases that can be treated using pine needle essential oil. For adults and children, administration of pine needle essential oil / turpentine internally should begin with a detoxification session. Administer sea water supplement in water (1 tsp per 8 ounces) for 2 weeks prior to administering medicinal turpentine to an autistic child. Follow the Binzel Diet and administer vitamin B17 to your autistic child to ensure that they receive amygdalin in the proper quantities to feed the amygdala. Read more here about how vitamin B17 / amygdalin can help your child battle against parasites

How to Administer Medicinal Turpentine Orally as an Herbal Cure for Autism

Use a 1cm x 1cm x 1cm sized sugar cube to administer the medicinal turpentine. Though you wouldn’t normally want to give an autistic child refined sugar, administering the turpentine using refined sugars helps the medicinal part of the oil to gain access to the interior of cells. Pour ¼ of a teaspoon over the sugar cube. The child should then eat the sugar cube.    Administer this treatment twice weekly.

How to Administer Medicinal Turpentine as an Emulsion Bath

Emulsion baths are used to treat sexual dysfunction in both men and women and they are very effective as a treatment as you’d expect given their effects on the autonomic nervous system (which is responsible for much or our sexual response or lack thereof). In children with autism emulsion baths can be modified slightly to make them more comfortable and enjoyable.

Below is the recipe for a Yellow Turpentine Emulsion Bath:

Yellow turpentine emulsion baths have a higher concentration of turpentine than white emulsion baths. It contains 49.5% more turpentine than white emulsion baths.  Ingredients:
  • Purified Water - 0.2 L
  • Castor Oil - 0.3 L
  • Sodium Hydroxide - 400 mg
  • Oleic Acid - 0.250 kg
  • Turpentine - 0.750 kg
Bring the castor oil to a boil in a water bath. Dilute the sodium hydroxide with purified water and gently mix them together with the castor oil until the mixtures is homogenous. Stir the mixture continuously and pour the oleic acid and turpentine into the mixture until the solution turns yellow. Then, let it cool.   After the emulsion cools, pour the mixture into glass containers that can be closed tightly.    When you are ready to use the yellow turpentine emulsion bath, pre-prepare 200 L of bathwater at 37 degrees Celsius (or a little less if your child is not comfortable in a bath of this temperature—pour a bath at the warmest temperature this is comfortable for your child). Add 20 mL of the solution to 3 liters of hot water at 50-60 degrees Celsius in a separate container.   Add the hot water mixture to the pre-prepared bathwater.    Note that turpentine emulsion baths increase blood pressure during the bath. Afterward, they lower blood pressure (as such, they are a natural treatment for high blood pressure).    Yellow turpentine emulsion baths are able to dissolve salt deposits in the body to get rid of pain in the muscles and joints. Yellow emulsion baths also have the following health effects on the body:
  • Improved metabolic function
  • Sweat gland activation
  • Hypotensive properties
  • Detoxification
  • Anti-bacterial

Final Words: Treat and Decalcify the Pineal Gland for ASD and Soul Retrieval Work

If you have a loved one who suffers from autism, read more about how to decalcify the pineal gland here. Also make an appointment with Lydian and I as shamanic practitioners who do soul retrievals if you feel like this form of treatment would complement natural therapies for autism. We look at autism as a disorder impacting the entire family system and as such, we teach parents how to do soul retrieval work for their own children. We look closely at the family dynamic, ancestral trauma, and we encourage parents to work with us to do psilocybin therapy online to overcome any trauma that impacts the energetic dynamic between them and their children.
