Methylene blue is the oldest synthetic pharmaceutical medicine on the market and it’s an amazing medicine that can accomplish amazing things if you know how to use it. Once you understand this medicine, I’m sure that you’ll want to keep a bottle of methylene blue in your medicine cabinet to treat major diseases like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or serious infections like Ebola or COVID-19 as well as metabolic diseases like autism or cancer. This is a medicine that’s extremely useful and travel-friendly. It can be stored as a liquid or as a powder to make it easy for you to take it anywhere you want to go.

Methylene blue is most powerful when it is given at lower doses. At higher doses, its physiological effects on the body are the opposite end of what it does when given at low doses. Dosing for Methylene Blue 1% Solution

Body Weight: 50 kg/110 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 50 mg/day or 100 drops/day

Body Weight: 55 kg/121 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 55 mg/day or 110 drops/day

Body Weight: 60 kg/132 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 60 mg/day or 120 drops/day

Body Weight: 65 kg/143 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 65 mg/day or 130 drops/day

Body Weight: 70 kg/154 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 70 mg/day or 140 drops/day

Body Weight: 75 kg/165 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 75 mg/day or 150 drops/day

Body Weight: 80 kg/176 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 80 mg/day or 160 drops

Body Weight: 85 kg/187 lbs:  1 mg/kg dose = 85 mg/day or 170 drops/day

Methylene Blue Plus Supplemental Oxygen and Molecular Hydrogen Water

Methylene blue works well in combination with supplemental oxygen, especially in situations involving respiratory distress, high nitric oxide levels, or any kind of degenerative disease including neurological or dementia-related issues. In emergency medicine, methylene blue is used with supplemental oxygen to treat methemoglobinemia, a situation in which the hemoglobin in red blood cells can’ efficiently carry oxygen to cells and tissues. 

In situations involving poor oxygenation of tissues, respiratory distress, degeneration of tissues in the body, cyanosis, (where skin tissues turn bluish or very pale colored), or shock, methylene blue can be used in combination with supplemental oxygen for more enhanced outcomes. Methylene blue improves the oxygen-carrying-capacity of red blood cells. When you combine this enhanced oxygen-carrying capacity that’s produced by methylene blue with oxygen supplementation, this combination strengthens tissues and can help people overcome breathing and respiratory issues.

If possible, combine supplemental oxygen treatments with molecular hydrogen water to balance your physiological pH and to allow the molecular hydrogen to repair damaged DNA. While supplemental oxygen will work with the methylene blue to improve oxygenation of tissues, oxygen can also increase the acidity of the body. The molecular hydrogen water will supply hydrogen ions to increase pH and alkalinity in the body for a balancing effect in diseases like dementia, cancer, or infection.

Methylene Blue Plus Red Light Therapy

In addition to the combination of methylene blue and supplemental oxygen and molecular hydrogen, the use of methylene blue with red light therapy is also an important treatment combo to understand. Methylene blue is naturally electrical in terms of its electron-donating capacity inside human cells. When combined with red light photons to energize those electrons and make them “go”, methylene blue can rev up human cells to give them enough energy to heal themselves. This is true whether you’re battling an infection or battling dementia, autoimmunity, cancer, or a neurological disorder.

Red light by itself is able to kill any pathogen that it touches. The tricky part is to get red light into areas of the body that are weakened by infection. When cells are “stained” with the blue color of methylene blue, their red-light-capturing power is enhanced. While the mitochondria in cells pick up red light photons to recharge themselves, pathogens that do not belong in or around our healthy human cells can be killed by red light then the pathogens are dyed with the blue color of the methylene blue. As such, red light therapy, when administered along with the proper dose of methylene blue, can improve the medicinal effects of methylene blue.

The Role of Methylene Blue in Controlling Nitric Oxide

Nitric oxide is a toxic molecule in the human body. It is a free radical that exists both as a byproduct of environmental pollution and also as a byproduct of human metabolism. Unfortunately, nitric oxide causes certain short-term desirable effects such as dilating blood vessels and as such, it has gotten a positive reputation in modern medicine as a beneficial substance that can be used without caution. Because conventional medicine treatments for disease tend to focus on band-aid effects and short-term results, nitric oxide is currently being used as a medicine in many contexts where it would more accurately be labeled as a toxic substance. 

Though nitric oxide is able to dilate blood vessels in the body, it does NOT enhance oxygenation of cells. On the contrary, nitric oxide blocks the body’s ability to use oxygen, so high levels of nitric oxide cause blood vessel dilation that imitates shock. In other words, nitric oxide, when given as a “medicine” functions in the body in a manner similar to cyanide or carbon monoxide. So when people take medicines that increase nitric oxide levels, such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and more, they are actually reducing their overall cellular energy production. 

Nitric oxide is perhaps most famous as a molecule that treats Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra all work by elevating levels of nitric oxide in the body for this purpose. Nitric oxide is produced when the body is under stress. But when the body is not under stress, carbon dioxide, a natural byproduct of breath and breathing, is the best blood vessel relaxant and general health enhancer that exists. When the body is stressed either by emotional or physical assaults (such as by a disease or an infection), nitric oxide is released to keep the blood flowing even though oxygen levels in the blood may be compromised.. 

Of course, if the body isn’t under stress to begin with, adding nitric oxide to the mix will create physical stress. It’s the increase in nitric oxide levels that makes a number of drugs like Cialis or Levitra work. The short-term effects of nitric oxide, after all, causes blood vessel dilation which helps men achieve erections more easily in the short-term. But in the long-term, nitric oxide decreases testosterone and fertility levels. Few men realize that Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis are causing their testosterone levels to drop precipitously as a result of the increase in nitric oxide content. Low testosterone levels due to iodine deficiency, organophosphate exposure, and vitamin K2 / Menaquinone-7 / MK-7 deficiency, in fact, are a major contributor to the problem of erectile dysfunction / ED.

As with many pharmaceuticals on the market today, the goal of drugs like Cialis or Viagra is not to cure disease, but rather to keep customers returning again and again to doctor’s offices as their health spirals ever downward.

While Viagra has become a household name and while this is a toxic free radical, nitric oxide has been awarded as the “Molecule of the Year”. Few people are aware of the serious problems that nitric oxide can cause those who try to use it for erectile dysfunction / ED, namely priapism (prolonged erections), penile gangrene, and even penile amputation. For general health, nitric oxide can be very toxic, causing cells to become de-energized and sicker and sicker over time.

And don’t forget: though the initial effects of nitric oxide is blood vessel dilation (along with the irreversible binding of nitric oxide to cytochrome C oxidase, a vital respiratory enzyme found in the mitochondria of cells that once blocked, reduces the overall energy production of the cell), the long-term effect eventually is for blood vessels to constrict as a result of excess nitric oxide production, reducing overall blood flow to the organs (which leads to a general decline in health as well as increasing problems with high blood pressure and diseases associated with cardiovascular issues including erectile dysfunction / ED).

Luckily, methylene blue is one of the most potent nitric oxide inhibitors known. Methylene blue is is available over-the-counter and as long as you aren’t pregnant, nursing, suffering from liver or kidney disease, taking an MAOI or SSRI, methotrexate and certain other prescription drugs, and as long as you don’t have a G6PD deficiency, you can use this medicine safely. Though we don’t recommend the use of methylene blue during pregnancy, we have seen a case study where a woman took methylene blue at high doses during pregnancy and this woman gave birth to a very health and active baby. In fact, this makes sense because methylene blue acts, in a way, to recharge a person’s cellular batteries…the mitochondria. Thus, it may not be dangerous or bad to take methylene blue during pregnancy, but if you’re pregnant or nursing, be aware that methylene blue has not been well-studied in these contexts.

When to Use Methylene Blue as a Nitric Oxide Inhibitor:

In small amounts, nitric oxide works to increase blood flow in the body to provide oxygen to areas that are really in need. In large amounts or over the long-term, however, nitric oxide has the opposite effect on the body. It causes cells to stop being able to use oxygen properly and it therefore contributes to health decline overall. 

NOTE: Nitric oxide is released as part of the body’s immune system response. It is produced as a free radical or rather, as a Reactive Nitrogen Species to kill bacteria and other pathogens. Methylene blue has other medicinal actions in the body besides just working as a nitric oxide inhibitor. But nitric oxide can be a big problem in the body. This molecule acts as a signal for a number of disease states, so it plays a role in perpetuating a number of different diseases including the following:

    • Wounds
    • Ebola Infection / Yellow Fever / Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever / Hemorrhagic Fever - Patients with high nitric oxide levels are more likely to die because the nitric oxide causes blood vessels to leak. Methylene blue has antiviral capabilities, but its main function in a disease like Ebola is to quell the cytokine storm. The cytokine storm is ultimately what kills patients and what causes hemorrhaging of the skin, organs, and eyes. Patients with other types of hemorrhagic fever such as dengue and yellow fever may also benefit from methylene blue therapy.
    • Malaria - It was used during World War II and remains, to this day, one of the most effective anti-malarials on the market. In comparison to other malaria medications, methylene blue causes a lot fewer side effects and it is a lot cheaper.
    • Urinary Tract Infection - Though methylene blue turns the urine blue and it can cause bladder irritation, it can be used to cure urinary Infections at home. It is often used with Cystex / methenamine.
    • Depression - Methylene blue quickly makes its way to the brain where it scavenges for pro-inflammatory nitric oxide to relieve depression.

When to Use Methylene Blue to Treat Cytokine Storm Symptoms and Cytokine Inflammatory Conditions

Methylene blue has the ability to treat a cytokine storm and this is no small thing in terms of improving both general health as well as treating major diseases and infections. A cytokine storm happens when the body throws everything it has in its immune arsenal at an infection or stressor. Cytokine storms are often the most deadly aspect of diseases like ebola or COVID-19. As such, methylene blue can be extremely useful as a tool to prevent cytokine storm during the course of serious diseases.

In clinical depression methylene blue works to reduce the number of pro-inflammatory cytokines that are causing brain inflammation (and corresponding depression symptoms). Methylene blue also increases anti-inflammatory cytokines to further that process of reducing inflammation quickly and effectively. Pro-inflammatory cytokines play a role in a number of devastating diseases as well as in mental illness and methylene blue gives us the ability to down-regulate their activities in the body to some extent while up-regulating the activity of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

The cytokine storm that happens in different disease states has been called by various names throughout history, but the cytokine storm is marked by a change in symptoms and a dramatic worsening of a patient’s health condition. But pro-inflammatory cytokines are not always released in a “storm”. Sometimes, for example in major clinical depression, they are released in a more chronic manner to cause ongoing inflammation.

A condition that involves inflammation, whether it is obvious or not, may benefit from methylene blue therapy to reduce inflammation by controlling the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing the release of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

How to Use Methylene Blue: Overview

There are different types of methylene blue. Buy only pharmaceutical grade methylene blue to use as a medication. It may be sold as 1% or 2% pharmaceutical grade methylene blue. Be sure to calibrate your dose according to whether you’re taking 1% or 2% methylene blue. Other, non-pharmaceutical-grade methylene blue products may contain a high proportion of contaminants.

By Mouth: Add methylene blue to water and follow the dosing guidelines above. Take methylene blue in 2 to 4 divided doses daily to avoid an upset stomach which can happen if you take a high dose of methylene blue all at once. 

Via a Nebulizer: Add a drop of methylene blue to filtered water in the nebulizer cup to enhance lung health. 

As Photodynamic Therapy with Red Light or Infrared Light: After ingesting methylene blue by mouth, shine an infrared or red light (of around 640 nm) at areas of the body that have pain or infection. 

Footbath Methylene Blue Administration: Doctors can also prescribe an FDA approved footbath that uses an electric current to administer a methylene blue “electrolyte” treatment topically. Typically this device is prescribed for diabetic neuropathy.

Methylene Blue with Supplemental Oxygen and Molecular Hydrogen: If you have a disease or disorder that involves low oxygen levels or tissue degeneration of any kind, methylene blue can be used with supplemental oxygen. Take the proper dose of methylene blue and administer 5-15 minutes or less of supplemental oxygen at 3 pounds up to 4 times per day. Ideally, if you have an infection or a degenerative disease, you would follow oxygen supplementation with 5-15 minutes of molecular hydrogen administered either via nasal cannula or as drinking water.
