How to Take Lithium Orotate Supplements Before, During, and After Pregnancy

Lithium orotate is a natural salt that's found in the food supply or in drinking water. However, as soils have become depleted of essential trace minerals and more and more people are required to filter their water using reverse osmosis in order to prevent exposure to toxic elements like bromine and fluorine, it’s become more difficult to obtain lithium simply by eating well and drinking clean water from the tap.

It can be helpful to look at where lithium is located on the Periodic Table of the Elements, since indeed, lithium gets a lot of bad press. Lithium is in the same column and family with sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium, all of which are safe and essential minerals for the body (with rubidium and cesium being trace minerals and sodium and potassium being major minerals, or electrolytes). In terms of medicine, all of these elements share in common that they can alkalize the body, hence the term “alkali metals”. Baking soda / sodium bicarbonate, cesium, and rubidium are all used therapeutically to treat cancer and other diseases that thrive in acidic environments. This is just a bit out of the scope of our conversation here about lithium, but still worth noting. Click on the links to read more about baking soda therapy and cesium therapy. I do want to mention, however, that baking soda therapy can be extremely useful as a non-toxic, natural treatment for cancer during pregnancy. Indeed, baking soda was the very first natural cure for cancer that I worked with to treat my husband’s melanoma many years ago and this gentle, non-toxic cure gave me faith that cancer could, in fact, be cured naturally. Indeed, this has been proven to me over and over again by clients with severe forms of cancer who work first with baking soda and prove it to themselves too. During pregnancy, baking soda therapy can literally save your life.

Lithium orotate, like baking soda, is a non-toxic alkalizing mineral that helps the body overcome major disease, as well as pain

Back to our discussion of lithium…

Lithium orotate is the nutritional form of lithium that can be taken as a supplement. It is very different from lithium carbonate or lithium chloride the pharmaceutical forms of lithium. Lithium orotate is more bioavailable, and can therefore be taken at much smaller, safer doses in order to achieve the same effects as lithium carbonate in the treatment of bipolar disorder and other mental health issues. Lithium carbonate and lithium chloride (the pharmaceutical forms of lithium) are less bioavailable, which makes it so patients have to take significantly higher doses of this type of lithium; these higher doses make it easier to overdose.

While lithium forms lithium orotate salts in nature, lithium does not naturally bind to carbonate or chloride. This is why lithium carbonate and lithium chloride were able to be patented by Big Pharma and sold to the public at a profit. Big Pharma cannot patent something that occurs in nature, but they were able to combine lithium with carbonate and with chloride to produce unnatural salts of lithium that are toxic to the human body, though still able to work a bit like the natural lithium orotate salt that cannot be patented.

(For reference, lithium orotate is usually given at a dose of 5-100mg per day (most people only take a dose of 5-20mg per day, however). Lithium carbonate, the pharmaceutical drug form of lithium, is given at doses of between 300-2000mg (or more) per day.)

There aren’t many studies on lithium orotate during pregnancy, however there are studies on lithium carbonate (generally, with rare exceptions, when a study refers to “lithium”, it’s referring to lithium carbonate or lithium chloride, which makes it difficult for the average woman to research this subject with confidence). Given that lithium carbonate has been approved for use in some cases of bipolar disorder during pregnancy, it’s reasonable to assume that lithium orotate, a much safer and nontoxic, nutritional form of lithium, is safe when taken at reasonable doses. Lithium carbonate and lithium chloride are both known for their toxicity because they are an unnatural, synthetic salt of lithium. The natural salt of lithium, on the other hand, lithium orotate, is not only non-toxic in relatively high doses, but it helps prevent a variety of disease states, pain, and mental health issues.   In cities where the natural municipal water supply naturally contains lithium orotate in higher than average quantities, the suicide rate, homicide rate, and rate of social violence tends to be considerably lower. In cities where lithium orotate in the water supply is non-existent, social issues, violence, suicide, depression, and homicide rates tend to be much higher. This is compelling and it’s a reason why women should consider having lithium orotate on hand to treat prenatal depression, pain during pregnancy, cancer during pregnancy, and to generally increase immune resistance during gestation.

Lithium Orotate for Prenatal Depression

In regard to depression specifically, studies have shown that, in populations where the drinking water contains trace amounts of lithium, the rates of suicide, genocide, and violence are lower than in populations where the water supply is deficient or completely devoid of this nutrient. Other research indicates that supplementation with nutritional lithium can be a powerful treatment for anxiety, depression, mood disorders, chronic pain, and much more. And, best of all, nutritional lithium supplements have an excellent safety profile for people of all ages and life situations (including pregnant women).    We all know that lithium carbonate or lithium chloride, both toxic salts, are regularly prescribed by doctors to treat manic depression / bipolar disorder. But lithium orotate can also be used as a natural, less toxic, treatment for bipolar disorder during pregnancy as well as when a woman is not pregnant. Lithium orotate is cheaper and it’s far less toxic – in fact it promotes good health. As such, lithium orotate is a valuable tool that women can use to overcome depression during pregnancy while simultaneously promoting the health of their baby.

Lithium Orotate for Fetal Development

Besides being valuable for balancing a mother-to-be’s mood, nutritional lithium is an extremely important for fetal and infant development. In fact, a high lithium content has been observed during the embryo stage of fetal development, which suggests that lithium is particularly important during these beginning stages of pregnancy. Other trace elements, along with lithium, are also present in the embryo in comparatively higher quantities during the first trimester of pregnancy. In addition, lithium deficiency (which can be present even at birth, if the mother didn’t consume enough lithium during her pregnancy) in infants and children has been correlated with behavioral defects and abnormalities.

Further, it’s interesting to note that some research indicates that blood levels of lithium decrease significantly throughout pregnancy. This suggests that pregnant women may actually have an increased need for this trace mineral, and that occasional lithium orotate supplementation may be wise, especially for women who have a history of depression or anxiety. Indeed, lithium is required for the metabolism of vitamin B9 / folate and vitamin B12, two vitamins that are not only essential for fetal development, but also for the physical and emotional well-being of the mother. If a person doesn’t consume enough lithium, their body may therefore struggle to metabolize these two important vitamins.

Lithium Orotate: Natural Pain Treatment During Pregnancy

If you suffer from pain during pregnancy and you want to avoid taking NSAIDs like aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, etc., consider using lithium orotate as an alternative. Lithium orotate has the ability to quell pain, even pain that’s usually unresponsive to pharmaceuticals. Pain that’s caused by autoimmune disease such as fibromyalgia is particularly responsive to lithium orotate.

Take 5-100 mg per day of lithium orotate per day to treat pain. Start with a low dose of 5 mg every 6-8 hours and increase the dose by 5 mg until you feel pain relief or you reach the maximum dose of 100 mg per day.

How to Take Lithium Orotate Supplements

Lithium orotate can be taken daily or on an as-needed basis depending on your needs. If you suffer from a more severe or persistent form of depression, a daily dose of 5-100 mg can be used (take 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg in the evening, increase the dose by 5 mg per day until you feel the desired effect). If you experience depression or anxiety during your pregnancy intermittently, take 5 mg of lithium orotate per day when you feel “low” until your mood starts to level back out again. Some women get drowsy after taking lithium orotate, and others don’t experience this effect. If you notice that lithium orotate makes you feel sleepy, plan to take it in the evening or before sleeping to improve relaxation and sleep quality as well.

Be sure to incorporate a seawater supplement or shilajit into your daily prenatal supplementation protocol. Seawater supplements and shilajit contain a long list of essential trace minerals, including lithium. This way, even if you choose to only take lithium orotate on an as-needed basis, you can be sure that your body is still getting tiny amounts of this vital trace mineral, as well as a variety of other important trace minerals.
