Bitter Kola Nut and Neem for Viral Infection: Herbal Remedy for Measles, Mumps, Polio, Herpes Simplex Virus-1, HIV, Influenza, and Yellow Fever
Azadirachta indica, also known as Neem, and Garcinia kola, also known as the bitter kola nut, are two herbs that have a broad spectrum of action against human disease. Here, we’re going to explore how these herbs work specifically to cure viral infection based on the scientific research.Garcinia kola is an herb that’s widely used in West Africa to solve many health problems including serious viral infection. This is the herb that inspired the famous drink known today as Coca-Cola (though today’s Coke soft-drink is nothing more than just chemicals, sugar, and carbonated water). In an earlier discussion, we talked about how and why Garcinia kola works to overcome Long COVID and post-COVID vax injury but how it can also be used as an herbal remedy to cure Ebola. This might seem too good to be true, we’ll expand on this topic to help readers understand how this herb works as a powerful general antiviral medicine and why you should consider working with it.
Kolaviron, Garcinol, Garcinoic Acid, and More: Antibacterial, Antiviral, Anti-Yeast, and Antiprotozoal
The garcinol in Garcinia kola is antibacterial, antiviral, anti-yeast, and antiprotozoal. The substance garinianin found in the roots of the Garcinia kola plant plays a role in the dental hygiene impact of root-based chewsticks that are used in Africa. Garcinianin is active against Streptococcus mutans, a bacteria. Scientists have found that Garcinia kola can be used to naturally treat Candida resulting from HIV infection. Meanwhile, kolaviron is a substance in the bitter kola nut that has been extensively studied in regard to its powerful medicinal effects on the body, including anti-HIV effects and anti-influenza effects, to name just a few.A wide array of flavonoids and biflavonoids have also been studied for their effect against serious infections such as measles, polio, Ebola, yellow fever, HIV, herpes, and more. Garcinia kola and other plants in the Garcinia species can be helpful in maintaining balance in the immune system to prevent severe cytokine storms and life-threatening reactions to viral infection.

Garcinia kola and Azadirachta indica: Most Powerful Herbs for Virus Infection
In one study, 14 different plants from different families that have an ethnomedical background in Nigeria were screened to see which ones had the highest level of effectiveness against the measles, polio, herpes simplex virus-1, and yellow fever virus. Scientists used high-tech analytics to test the antiviral activity of the various plant extracts to see how each one performed against these four viruses.
Garcinia kola contained four volatile substances that were active against the four viral infections. Azadirachta indica contained five volatile substances with powerful medicinal effects against the four viral infections.
Garcinia kola: Herb for Measles and More…
In Nigeria, the bitter kola nut has been used since ancient times to cure serious diseases and infections. For measles infection, the bitter kola nut can help treat and prevent measles complications like pneumonia, that are often much more serious than the measles infection itself. It is famous for its ability to treat cough and asthma, presumably through its ability to balance reproductive hormone levels, which are often a major part of what causes chronic cough and bronchial constriction.
But in order to really understand viral infection and how herbs like Garcinia kola and Azadirachta indica act to treat these viral infections, it can be helpful to look at the use of bitter kola nuts as an antidote to venomous snakebites. Remember the rumors about COVID and snake venom and the idea that COVID spike proteins could cause symptoms of disease that resemble the symptoms caused by venomous snakebites? Rumors that the COVID vax contained snake venom were based on a real fact that the COVID spike protein had this ability to interact with and block the nicotinic receptors in the cholinergic nervous system similar to what snake venom does in the body. The COVID spike protein is definitely not the only virus that can block nicotinic or muscarinic receptors to cause symptoms of disease though. Indeed, bacterial infections like cholera often release toxins that block either the nicotinic or muscarinic receptors to cause very serious symptoms of disease. Cholera, for example, could cause patients to appear to be dead (when in fact the patient was still alive) as a result of the toxin released by Vibrio cholera. Understanding this model of viral and bacterial infection can make it much easier to find a natural remedy for bacteria and viral infections like measles, polio, COVID, ebola, yellow fever, HIV, herpes, and more. Once you realize that you’re working with nicotinic and muscarinic receptors to keep them “clear” so that chronic, severe symptoms of disease don’t set in, herbal remedies often make a lot more sense.
As an herbal remedy for measles, Garcinia kola functions to reduce constriction of the bronchial tubes while also dilating alveolar ducts, sacs, and the alveoli themselves to generally improve respiratory activity. This helps to prevent measles complications like pneumonia, for example, but Garcinia kola is also used to manage dysentery (severe diarrhea) and chest colds too. This herb helps to keep both the nicotinic and the muscarinic receptors clear from viral or bacterial toxin blockages during infection.
Studies have shown that it has a detoxifying effect on the gallbladder, an organ where viruses can easily colonize and replicate. Indeed, Long COVID often develops as a result of COVID virus colonization of the gallbladder. As a gallbladder cleanser, Garcinia kola prevents colonization by viruses like the measles, mumps, polio, and more. Meanwhile, this herb is also antimicrobial, which means that it can kill not just viruses but also parasites, bacteria, and even fungi.
Garcinia kola has antimicrobial effects against the following diseases:
- Measles
- Mumps
- Polio
- HIV
- Ebola
- Yellow Fever
- COVID
- Long COVID
- Post-COVID vax injury
- Influenza (various types)
- Herpes Virus
- Malaria (different strains)
- Yellow fever
- Hepatitis
- Toxoplasmosis
- Monkeypox
- Smallpox
- Lassa fever
- Meningitis
- Parasite infection
Garcinia kola: Herbal Remedy for HIV
Garcinia kola has been studied for its effects against HIV. Bitter kola nuts contain a substance known as garcinol that has antiviral activity against HIV. It appears to exert its effects by inhibiting histone acetyltransferase of the HIV-infected cells. However, though this one substance, garcinol, has specific anti-HIV effects, there are other medicinal substances in Garcinia kola that can act to help patients overcome HIV naturally.Garcinia speciosa ethyl acetate extracts contain prostatanes, garcisaterpenes A and C that can suppress HIV-1 reverse transcriptase activity in the body. Another plant in the Garcinia genus, Garcinia multiflora has also been studied for its effects as a natural cure for HIV. In one study, scientists were able to show that a number of substances in Garcinia multiflora have anti-HIV effects, but one substance specifically had significant antiviral activity against HIV-1: morelloflavone. Morelloflavone is found in all of the Garcinia species including Garcinia kola, which explains why the bitter kola nut can be used as an herbal remedy for HIV.
Robusaflavone and Hinokiflavone (which is found in both Rhus succedanea and Garcinia multiflora have anti-HIV-1 activity that works against HIV reverse transcriptase. Other biflavonoids in the Garcinia multiflora and Rhus succedanea are weakly active, but potentially important as medicinal agents that can be used as a natural treatment for HIV-1.
Yet another scientific study evaluated alcohol extracts of 9 different Garcinia plant species in Tanzania to evaluate their effects on cancer as well as HIV. The following Garcinia plant species had moderate activity as an herbal remedy for HIV-1:
- Garcinia livingstoneii
- Garcinia semseii
It should be noted, however, that this study did not examine the effects of Garcinia kola or Garcinia cambogia, for example. The only Garcinia plant species included in this study were gathered in Tanzania and they included:
- Garcinia livingstoneii
- Garcinia semseii
- Garcinia ferrea
- Garcinia bifasciculata
- Garcinia edulis
- Garcinia buchananni
- Garcinia volkensis
- Garcinia kingaensis
- Garcinia huillensis
It is possible that Garcinia kola or Garcinia cambogia would have more noteworthy effects against HIV.
Garcinia kola: Herbal Remedy for Candida due to HIV
Scientists have looked specifically at chewing Garcinia kola nuts as an herbal remedy for Candida caused by HIV. Studies have shown that chewing bitter kola nuts are a reliable remedy for Candida in immunocompromised individuals. It’s effectiveness has been compared to chlorhexidine except Garcinia kola also is also used as a holistic remedy for HIV, not just as a way to get rid of oral Candida symptoms. Candida symptoms generally clear within 3 weeks of treatment using Garcinia kola.Garcinia kola: Herbal Remedy for Influenza
Influenza viruses cause a cytokine storm which can cause a redox imbalance in patients. This redox imbalance can be helpful as a way to kill the flu virus, but it can also lead to death if a cytokine storm is too extreme. Scientists have studied Garcinia kola as an herbal remedy for influenza because the prevalence of amantadane-resistant viruses created a need to find herbal remedies for the flu and anti-influenza agents that Big Pharma could try to develop synthetically in a lab.Rather than waiting for Big Pharma to develop a toxic form of the medicinal substances in bitter kola nut, why not just get some natural Garcinia kola?
As with HIV, Garcinia kola inhibits histone acetyltransferase of influenza-infected cells. Garcinol regulates viral polymerase function as a mechanism of action to naturally treat influenza. But kolaviron is another medicinal substance that’s found in Garcinia kola that has a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect on the body to prevent cytokine storms and maintain a redox balance in favor of healing after severe influenza infection.
In studies involving animals, mice infected with influenza that were treated with kolaviron from the bitter kola nut progressively increased in weight with minimal deaths during infection with the influenza virus. Oxygenation in the lungs was enhanced with pretreatment with bitter kola nut prior to developing symptoms. The kolaviron in bitter kola nut balances myeloperoxidase activity and nitric oxide production by increasing glutathione levels. The increase in glutathione, a detoxifying substance in the body, promotes optimal functioning of the lung and the liver during influenza infection.
Studies into the use of kolaviron by itself (not as a whole-plant herbal remedy for influenza) was administered at a dose of 400 mg/kg, but readers should note that the whole bitter kola nut contains many medicinal substances, not just kolaviron. For a severe influenza infection, consider taking 1000 mg / kg body weight of the whole bitter kola nut / Garcinia kola daily starting as soon as symptoms appear and continuing for at least 1 week after the influenza symptoms have passed.
Garcinia kola: Herbal Remedy for Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplasmosis gondii is an opportunistic infection that has become more virulent recently due to mutant strains. Drug resistance is a problem with toxoplasmosis infection. Studies have shown that ethyl acetate forms of Garcinia kola can be used as a natural treatment for toxoplasmosis.Bitter Kola Nut: Herbal Remedy for Malaria and Parasite Infection
The bitter kola nut is used to treat a variety of parasite infections in West Africa including malaria and Trypanosoma infection.Bitter Kola Nut as an Herbal Remedy for Malaria
Garcinia kola is used traditionally to treat malaria, a blood parasite infection. Studies have shown that kolaviron is able to suppress Plasmodium bergheii in malaria-infected mice. Garcinia kola has an almost identical antimalarial effect on Plasmodium falciparum as quinine and, indeed, studies have shown that kola nut should not be taken in tandem with quinine as these two plant-based medicines interact in a negative way and cancel each other out.
Bitter Kola Nut as an Herbal Remedy for Trypanosoma Parasite Infections
Additionally, kolaviron has been shown to be effective against Trypanosoma parasite infections. Scientists believe that kolaviron works by interfering with trypanothione reductase, an enzyme that helps Trypanosoma parasites maintain homeostasis.

Garcinia kola Dose:
Garcinia kola is a relatively non-toxic herb that produces no serious side effects. It does however, impact Cytochrome P and should be used with caution when taking other drugs or herbs. Grapefruit is a food that impacts Cytochrome P and drugs or herbs that are impacted by grapefruit should also not be combined at the same time with Garcinia kola. The LD50 of bitter kola is believed to around 5000 mg/kg body weight. The primary health risk associated with consuming too high of a dose of bitter kola is fertility issues. Most studies recommend a dose between 100-500 mg/kg body weight administered in divided doses throughout the day. For reproductive hormone balancing, this herb must be taken for 6-24 weeks.
Garcinia Kola Dose for Children:
Garcinia kola should be administered according to a child’s approximate body weight at a dose of 100-1000 mg/kg body weight. Choose lower doses for chronic conditions and raise the dose slowly. Choose higher doses for more severe or acute health issues in children.
