What is a Detox Reaction (aka Die-Off Reaction)?
We’ve all been taught to believe that when our bodies feel good, we’re healthy and when our bodies feel bad, we’re sick. But this isn’t always the case. A Healing Crisis, also known as a Detoxification Reaction or Herxheimer Reaction happens when the body begins the natural process of healing itself by removing toxicities and pathogens. When toxins are released into the circulatory system by pathogens that are dying, rather than feeling better, a patient going through a Healing Crisis feels worse (at least at first). That’s because the kidneys, skin, and digestive system can’t rid the body of the toxins fast enough, leaving them in circulation and thus causing nausea, fatigue, headaches, fever, and general malaise.Toxins that are released into circulation can come from a variety of different sources. A successful program designed to kill off invading pathogens in the body can lead to a Herxheimer Reaction when they die in vast numbers and release endotoxins into the body. When the body isn’t used to ridding itself of these endotoxins in large quantities, discomfort results. As the body gets healthier and becomes more accustomed to undertaking this process of detoxification, the Healing Crisis becomes less pronounced.

Most Common Symptoms Associated with the Healing Crisis:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Increased Blood Pressure
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Night Sweats
- Hot or Cold Flashes
- Joint Pain
- General feeling of malaise
Other Healing Crisis Causes:
A number of treatments can set off a Healing Crisis, from Kangen Water / Molecular Hydrogen to the use of MMS (Miracle Mineral Solution). Even sunlight exposure can cause a detoxification reaction because of sunlight's healing effects on the liver. (Note that a detox reaction from sunlight exposure looks a lot like a sunburn; read more about the power of sunlight here). Reiki and acupuncture can both elicit a detox reaction associated with healing. Homeopathy and the act of fasting or juicing can also bring on this kind of reaction. A Herxheimer Reaction can take place in response to physical, emotional, or spiritual healing. Even certain hypnotherapy or psychotherapy treatment methods can cause a Detoxification Reaction brought on by profound emotional healing.

A change to your diet that includes the addition of foods that contain probiotics or coconut, or recently added herbal or vitamin supplements to your daily regime can bring on a Healing Crisis. As an example of this, iodine deficiency, when corrected, often results in a bromine detox. When iodine isn't present in the body in high enough quantities, bromine from the environment is able to take over the iodine receptors and thus cause illness and disease. As iodine replaces the bromine when a person supplements with sufficient amounts of iodine, the bromine has to leave the body, and on its way out, if often causes a detox reaction. You can read more about this particular process here.If you find yourself in the throes of a major Healing Crisis, back off a little bit on the detoxification process. Drink plenty of water, do a coffee enema, and get plenty of rest to facilitate the healing process and move past the Herxheimer Reaction to a healthier you.

What to Expect During a Detoxification Reaction:
The treatments we recommend to clients here typically involve a “tear down” and then a “rebuild” process. In other words, you’ll feel worse before you feel better. Keeping a journal will help you see the pattern and notice how following a detox, you feel better than you did before the detox. Many people get confused when they go through a detoxification reaction and feel like they’re getting sicker without realizing that the process of purging (diarrhea, vomiting, increased urination, and even fevers and achiness) are all part of a process of throwing off toxins and getting rid of pathogens. If your body has been debilitated by a lack of certain nutrients (vitamin B17, for example, or iodine and vitamin K2), your body will try to keep things running smoothly by substituting other nutrients. It’s a bit like trying to build a snow fence using toothpicks and dental floss at times when the body doesn’t have the proper nutrients. It works with what it’s been given. The body uses what it has available at the time, but when the proper nutrients become available, tissues that are not “properly built” or that are weak due to malnutrition may be deconstructed and rebuilt. As old materials are thrown off, patients may experience a detox reaction.
A NOTE ABOUT REVERSE CYCLING - Expect to go through a “tear down” and then “rebuild” process where you revisit disease states that you’ve experienced in the past including a worsening of your disease symptoms. If you experience stronger symptoms or if you experience symptoms of past disease states, this is likely “reverse cycling” that occurs as the body returns to a state of health.

The Liver / Gallbladder / Pancreas: Enzyme Therapy and Detoxification
Though it may not seem like your liver/gallbladder is involved in your disease, many pathogens retreat to the liver when people use prescription antibiotic/antimicrobial therapies because the liver is somewhat immune to these substances by virtue of its detoxification function in the body. The liver is literally responsible for breaking down prescription antibiotics. The gallbladder is the liver’s sidekick and it stores bile from the liver so it is often involved in harboring pathogenic “refugees” too that have migrated from an original site of infection to the safe harbor of liver and gallbladder tissues. The pancreas gets involved via the ductwork which connects the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas such that all of the enzymes from these organs dump through a single duct, the Ampulla of Vater. A clog in the duct or pathogens in one organ can lead to problems in the other organs too via the ductwork.
In reality, you may or may not need Enzyme Therapy. However, enzymes are some of the most difficult substances that the body must produce to stay alive. It takes a lot of energy to make them and clients that eat a lot of meats or animal products use a lot of enzymes which can be generally debilitating. People who eat a plant-based diet may suffer from enzyme deficiencies for other reasons.
Be aware though, that enzymes work on more than just the digestive system. As an example, oox bile supplements can cure for psoriasis. Using nothing but ox bile, about 80% of people with psoriasis can be cured. So ox bile supports the liver, but it works throughout the body to relieve psoriatic arthritis and skin eruptions as well as digestive upsets common in psoriasis patients. Pancreatic enzymes, in contrast, can be used to cure cystic fibrosis, a serious lung disease that (importantly in your case) involves fibrosis. Indeed, pancreatic enzymes and lung health are intimately connected, but pancreatic enzymes and fibrotic diseases that involve an overgrowth of tissue either malignant or benign are also related. In the early 1900’s (prior to the advent of the AMA) pancreatic enzymes were being used as a stand-alone cancer cure with a 13% cure rate that dwarfs the stand-alone “cure” rate for chemo (which is only 2-3%). Pancreatic enzymes dissolve fibrotic growths that can create pressure on neighboring organs.
Needless to say, enzyme therapies can help the body detox more efficiently but the enzymes also promote health through other mechanisms of action throughout the body.
Taking these enzymes will ensure that you get all of your vitamins and minerals. It’s important that the food that you eat digests properly and that you are able tp absorb the nutrients to ensure that your body will rebuild. It may also help with digestive problems that you have by facilitating digestion in a general way. Enzymes can promote good digestion while they ease detoxification, promote tissue rebuilding, and also support liver, stomach, intestine, and pancreatic health.
Below are the enzymes I recommend:
- Betaine / Pepsin - Take this before, during, or right after meals if you feel “full” after eating or if you suffer from indigestion. It works on the first stage of digestion in the stomach.
- Ox Bile - There are a number of so-called “autoimmune” diseases that respond very well to ox bile supplementation because if your liver and gallbladder ducts are infected/colonized they’re probably also clogged and bile is not being released in sufficient quantities. Sometimes the liver/gallbladder puke out bits and pieces of a pathogen in the form of peptidoglycans that are EXTREMELY irritating to human tissues. In the intestines, bile works like a detergent to clean the gut and it also digests pathogenic material down to harmless bits and pieces that can be removed from the body. If you have too little bile, a variety of diseases develop due to a deficiency of fat soluble vitamins.. Take 125 mg with every meal.
- Pancreatic Enzymes: Pancreatic enzymes, when there’s an excess of them, are absorbed into the blood where they function as antimicrobials in our blood by dissolving the outer membrane of pathogens and cancer cells:
- Trypsin and Chymotrypsin - take 2 per day
- Serrapeptase and Nattokinase - Take one per day
- Lipase, Amylase, Protease - Take two capsules twice daily.
How to Detoxify / Remove Pathogens and Gallstones from the Liver / Gallbladder
If you do in fact, still have a pathogen living in your liver, detoxification of the liver is important. First, gallstones that may be clogging the ducts need to be removed.
