DMSO for the Ear: Holistic Health Through Ear Health
NOTE: If you are working to stop recurrent ear infections in a child or an adult, be aware that scientific research has shown that recurrent ear infections may actually be caused by stomach acid or bile acid reflux. When the contents of the digestive system bubble up into the esophagus, tiny droplets can end up in the ear canal and in the ears via the esophagus and the eustachian tubes. When this happens, the ear can become inflamed which can mimic the appearance of an ear infection. Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctors are notoriously inattentive to patients unless you can find an exceptional one, so be aware that you or your child may be having ear infections due to high stomach acid, which is usually a temporary condition that can be treated by taking 1/4 to 1 teaspoon of baking soda in water. Further, for bile acid reflux, which can cause even inner ear problems like vertigo and unexplained dizziness, you can administer chitosan to bind with the bile and restore balance in the body. Chitosan is a natural substance that restores the gut flora and rebalances many functions in the body. WARNING: Dimethyl Sulfoxide / DMSO should always be used with great care and attention to dosing instructions and other administration guidelines for the treatment of ear issues. DMSO can destroy inner ear hairs if used at too high of a dose inside the ear.The structures of the ears are uniquely isolated and when they are afflicted with infection, they can be hard to treat using antibiotics. In conventional medicine, broad-spectrum antibiotics are often prescribed even though they fail to prevent long-term complications and hearing problems in those with ear infections. They also often fail to work to cure ear infection. Doctors also often prescribe ear drops that are administered directly into the ears, but these “medicines” can and often do harm the delicate structures of the ear when they’re applied directly through the ear canal. Patients may or may not be informed in advance of the possibility of harm due to ear drops. An alternative way to treat ear diseases involves using DMSO and administering it from outside the ear so that the DMSO travels directly into the ear through the bloodstream.

Dimethyl sulfoxide / DMSO has been studied in terms of its ability to treat external ear and internal ear problems, but the DMSO dose is extremely important if you use this medicine to treat the ear internally as an ear-drop. A too-high dose of DMSO can lead to damage to the hairs in the inner ear. Don’t let that discourage you from using DMSO though, especially if you’re struggling with a fungal ear infection or recurrent ear infections. In this discussion, we’ll talk about some of the most important alternative medicines for ear infection, at-home treatment for fungal ear infection, treatment for external ear inflammation, and more.

Dimethyl sulfoxide can be combined with other medications like antibiotics to treat an ear infection that won’t go away, but most doctors don’t know or won’t bother looking to find information about which antibiotics combine with DMSO to treat ear infection safely. Also, the dose of the DMSO must be carefully considered to prevent damage to the inner ear if the DMSO is being applied to the inside of the ear. Antibiotics that are combined with DMSO can be absorbed topically through the skin and applied to the ear just in front of the ear flap where the face meets with the ear. This is where the blood supply feeding the middle and the inner ear runs. It may also be valuable to apply DMSO in combination with other medications to the mastoid process just behind the ear lobe.Though DMSO can be valuable in the treatment of necrotizing fasciitis and malignant otitis externa, it is not the front-line treatment. In fact, citric acid or even vinegar are a better choice of treatment because DMSO scavenges for free radicals which can have a counterproductive effect as a treatment for flesh-eating bacteria. With the right type of nano-colloidal silver, DMSO can be used with success to treat malignant otitis externa, but if you’re looking for an alternative to the antibiotics for flesh-eating bacteria that don’t work, keep reading to learn more about the use of low-concentration acids like citric acid for flesh-eating bacteria.

Cure Malignant Otitis Externa / Alternative Treatment for Necrotizing Otitis Externa
Malignant Otitis Externa, also known as Necrotizing Otitis Externa, is a serious ear infection characterized by tiny abscesses, bone involvement, exudation, progressive inflammation, and the appearance of granulations in and around the ear. Fever and symptoms of intoxication are often involved in malignant otitis externa. This type of ear infection can quickly spread to the pinna and the external auditory canal if it is not properly treated.

Malignant otitis externa is usually caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterial infection that is most often seen in people with diabetes or those with a compromised immune system. If you have diabetes and malignant otitis externa, click here to buy our book Herbal Diabetes Cures and Treatments to better understand how to overcome diabetes naturally as a part of healing malignant otitis externa. It is good to work on both diabetes as well as malignant otitis externa at the same time because lack of nutrients in the infected cells is a big part of what causes this disease. Diabetes is a disease that involves insulin and the inability of cells to take in not only blood sugar for fuel, but also nutrients. Once cells begin to receive nutrients again, they begin to be able to protect themselves and heal in a more normal way.

Nebulizing hypertonic saline has been shown to be able to get rid of Pseudomona aeruginosa lung infection in patients with cystic fibrosis and patients with malignant otitis externa can benefit from nebulizing with hypertonic saline as well. Drinking salt water 3-4 times per day prepared by putting 1 teaspoon Himalayan sea salt in 8 ounces of water can help the cells in the body, including those that are infected in the ear, take in micronutrients. Antidiabetic herbs like Momordica charantia should be administered to encourage proper nutrient uptake by cells as part of the treatment for malignant otitis externa. The Insulin plant / Costus igneus, interestingly, is used for both as a natural cure for diabetes as well as to cure Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection (the bacteria that is most often responsible for malignant otitis externa). Insulin plant is also known as Spiral Flag and as an antidiabetic herb, it has the following medicinal actions:
- Hypolipidemic
- Diuretic
- Antioxidant
- Antimicrobial
- Anticancer
This herb contains a number of medicinal agents that make it ideal as an herbal remedy for diabetes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and also an herbal remedy for malignant otitis externa. It contains an appreciable amount of trace minerals. Himalayan sea salt and water also contain trace minerals that help cells function properly and absorb other nutrients. DMSO for Malignant Otitis Externa
DMSO can be used in combination with Chlorine Dioxide Solution / CDS to treat ear infections, but malignant otitis externa is different. Necrotizing bacteria don’t tend to respond to treatment with activated CDS. And DMSO scavenges for reactive oxygen species and free radicals that kill bacteria that cause necrotizing fasciitis. Rather, gangrene and necrotizing infection is most responsive to acids such as the citric acid activator in the CDS combination solution. Administer the Citric Acid directly to the wound(s) at 3% concentration using a sterile gauze pad. Change the pad often.DMSO can be counterproductive in the treatment of necrotizing bacteria except in combination with specific nano-colloidal silver preparations. For necrotizing bacteria infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, DMSO has been shown in scientific studies to inhibit pyocyanin production. Pyocyanin is a pathogenic factor. DMSO also has the ability to limit biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. That being said, studies are ongoing, and DMSO can sometimes be harmful when used against certain necrotizing bacterial infections.
One of the key ways to use DMSO properly for necrotizing bacterial infection is to combine the DMSO with nutrients, especially amino acids. Patients with compromised immunity or diabetes and malignant otitis externa are often susceptible to infection because their cells are not able to utilize or absorb nutrients for some reason. DMSO can carry nutrients like amino acids into cells to bypass some of the insulin needs in the body. To learn more about nutrients that can be carried directly into cells using DMSO, click here. Note that most of the studies into the use of DMSO for better nutrient absorption were done on Down’s syndrome and the use of DMSO for nutrient delivery in this disease. However, DMSO can be used to deliver nutrients in patients who have other diseases as well. Administer the DMSO via the mouth if you are using it for nutrient delivery and avoid administering it directly to the necrotizing wound.

Is there a cure for otitis media in children?
Otitis media is extremely common. Over 60% of children develop an ear infection within the first year of their lives. In about 17% of children, otitis media recurs at least 3 times. By the age of 7 years, about 93% of children have had a middle ear infection. Severe middle ear infections happen in 16-18% of children. Chronic inflammation of the middle ear during childhood is one of the most common causes of hearing loss.Click here to learn more about how to treat an ear infection at home.
Though many parents today are familiar with DMSO, ear infection in children should be treated with great care using dimethyl sulfoxide. DMSO should be administered to the outside of the ear in front of the ear flap and on the mastoid process behind the ear. Though DMSO can be applied to the external canal of the ear using a Q-tip, you should not administer DMSO inside the ear as a drop in children.
Scientists believe that one of the reasons why hearing loss occurs after middle ear infection is because of persistent microcirculation changes that cause the middle and inner ear to receive less blood following infection. The body is designed to close off blood supply from infected areas of the body so as to prevent the spread of infection. Blood supply is governed by the sympathetic nervous system and it can be reopened using tools like Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequencies (PEMF), red light therapy, and craniosacral therapy. In children though, PEMF cannot be used because PEMF speeds bone ossification. Children need for their bones to remain in a semi-un-ossified state during the rapid growth of childhood. Red light therapy, on the other hand, and craniosacral therapy are alternative options to re-establish blood supply to the inner and middle ear. Yet another option is to get biomagnets and place them with opposite polarities facing each other on opposite ears for 15 minutes daily to improve blood supply to the ears in children. Better yet, seek out the assistance of a trained biomagnetism therapist to help re-establish blood flow to the ear while simultaneously treating the underlying infection.
Most ear infections are caused by one of the following bacteria:
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Moraxella catarrhalis
- Streptococcus pyogenes
Viral infection often supports the development of the bacterial infection. Biomagnetism treats both the viral infection as well as the bacterial infection at the same time.
Castor Oil and DMSO for Ear Infection
Castor oil can be administered as an ear-drop to treat both bacterial and fungal ear infections. Note however, that it is best to avoid ear drops if the eardrum has a hole in it. It can be excruciatingly painful to apply castor oil to the ear as eardrops if the eardrum is perforated.Click here to read John’s perforated eardrum story to learn more about how to heal a perforated eardrum. Depending on how long your eardrum has been perforated, you may be able to use irritant drops to spur the eardrum to heal naturally.
It can also be painful to apply castor oil to the ear as an eardrop if the eardrum is not perforated. Nonetheless, if you apply castor oil to the ear even if the eardrum is perforated, it probably won’t do any damage and the pain will eventually subside. If you are applying castor oil to a child’s ears as an eardrop, be aware that it may be painful.

An alternative to applying castor oil inside the ear is to combine the castor oil with DMSO and administer it topically. Rub it all over the ear, but especially in front of the ear and behind the ear over the bump known as the mastoid process (located behind the ear lobe). Combine DMSO with castor oil in equal parts in a glass bowl. The bowl should be made of glass because DMSO can dissolve and then combine with a variety of plastics. The exact proportion of castor oil and DMSO is not extremely important, but mix the castor oil and DMSO thoroughly using a wooden spoon, a toothpick, a chopstick, or some other wooden utensil. Administering castor oil and DMSO to the ear is much less painful using this method, but it might be necessary to administer it more frequently than one might administer eardrops.

DMSO and Azithromycin / Zithromax
DMSO can be combined with an antibiotic like azithromycin / zithromax / a Z-pak to increase the potency of the antibiotic to treat an drug-resistant ear infection. I need to emphasize though, that DMSO increases the potency of medications like azithromycin. As such, it must be used with caution at a much lower-than-usual dose of azithromycin. To combine azithromycin with DMSO, use a glass bowl and crush a pill. Then put several drops of DMSO with the powder. Stir and allow the azithromycin to dissolve in the DMSO. Apply the DMSO-azithromycin combination to the outside of the ear. You can also use a Q-tip to apply the DMSO-zithromax combination to the ear canal.
Zithromax / Azithromycin has been shown to interfere with the virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in part by preventing biofilm production. DMSO has related anti-virulence factors against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Combining DMSO and zithromax / azithromycin at home entails some risk and experimentation, but this author has worked with this combination to treat a severe cat bite topically. By using the DMSO with zithromax, this author was able to avoid taking zithromax orally and avoid harming the intestinal gut flora. Use about 1/10th to 1/5th of the usual dose of zithromax with DMSO to treat an ear infection through external application of the DMSO-zithromax drug combination.

DMSO for Ear Infection: Dosing and Administration
Click here to read the basic guidelines for how to use DMSO safely. There are alternatives to administering DMSO and other medications to the inside of the ear. Patients can take DMSO preparations orally instead. The ear and the eustachian tubes are connected directly to the mouth, after all and DMSO has the ability to easily pass through cell membranes to go where it is most needed in the body. Another option is to administer DMSO just in front of the ear flap on the outer perimeter of the face where it meets the ear. This is where the blood supply that feeds the middle ear is located. If you apply DMSO preparations to this area of the face, just in front of the ear flap, it will go into the bloodstream and arrive at the middle and inner ear. Unlike administering DMSO directly inside the ear, administering DMSO through the blood vessels that feed the middle and inner ear structures allows this medicine to enter the ear without the risk of causing harm to the hairs in the inner ear.
If the ear canal is inflamed, as is often the case in otitis media and other ear conditions including fungal ear infection, DMSO can be applied directly to these tissues using a Q-tip. The DMSO should be diluted to 25% with water to prevent severe drying of the skin.
DMSO can be administered in extremely high doses because, by itself, it has a toxicity level similar to that of water. But DMSO absorbs moisture from whatever it contacts, so you have to be mindful or rehydrating tissues where you are regularly applying DMSO. If redness or inflammation of the skin occurs, apply water to the skin. Castor oil acts to help keep the skin hydrating when applying DMSO.
There is no specific number of drops of DMSO that a person needs in order to heal an ear infection at home. Rather, use DMSO to help make it possible to reach the middle and inner ear without having to apply drops directly inside the ear. DMSO makes medicines that normally can’t penetrate the skin into medicines that can be applied topically. The number of drops that you use, for example, to create a combination solution of castor oil and DMSO would depend on how big the patient’s ear is and how much DMSO and castor oil you need to thoroughly cover the ear flap and the area in front of and behind the ear. If you are using DMSO with zithromax / azithromycin, be sure to lessen the dosage significantly to 1/10th or less of the usual dose.
