Can castor oil be combined with DMSO?
Both DMSO and castor oil are well-known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, and indeed, combining the two can have powerful results in the treatment of chronic pain and inflammatory conditions. Both of these medicinal substances are also known for their ability to dissolve scar tissue, which is important when it comes to treating chronic pain, as we’ll discuss in greater detail below.Though castor oil has the ability to pass through the skin when it is properly warmed after topical application, DMSO can be mixed with castor oil to enhance its tissue-penetrating abilities considerably. The combination of DMSO and castor oil used together make a powerful medicine.

Scars, Adhesions, and Strictures as a Cause of Chronic Pain and Other Health Problems
Many people aren’t aware of the fact that scars, even old ones or ones that you can’t see that exist inside the body, can be a cause of chronic pain. Scars and adhesions (which are areas of scar tissue that have developed and that now connect 2 areas of the body that are usually not connected) have been found to inhibit neurotransmission and normal blood flow through the body, both of which can lead to pain through mis-fired nerve signals and a lack of oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood in different organs and tissues. There are a few different ways to relieve chronic pain caused by scars and adhesions, including neural therapy (which utilizes DMSO in combination with procaine as injections – a skilled doctor performs this type of therapy) and castor oil. Castor oil is well-known for its ability to dissolve adhesions and scars, both inside and outside the body. DMSO also has scar-healing abilities, and can enhance the absorption of castor oil into the skin and tissues, thus speeding up the healing process.
Any scars that you can see on your body, especially major ones (such as episiotomy/perineal tear scars and C-section scars in women, serious wounds from previous injuries, or scars from any kind of surgery), can be potential candidates for treatment with castor oil and DMSO for pain relief and general healing. Chronic inflammation in different areas of the body, such as in the intestines, can sometimes lead to a stricture caused by the development of scar tissue in the organs (strictures can be caused by different factors, but in this context we’re referring to strictures caused by chronic inflammation that leads to the development of scar tissue). Scar-tissue based strictures can also be treated with castor oil and DMSO.

Castor oil is extremely beneficial in the treatment of women’s health issues. For example, castor oil has been used to prevent miscarriage naturally. It is also used as part of a protocol to naturally flush fallopian tubes that have scar tissue that is causing fertility issues. In reality, both men and women can benefit from working with castor oil as a gentle, yet effective at home treatment for reproductive problems, digestive issues, and even thyroid disease.
Dissolving scars and adhesions can not only relieve chronic pain, but may also directly help treat conditions like:
- Infertility (in both men and women)
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic pain
- Menstrual problems
- Bilateral hip pain
- Bowel obstructions
- Urinary bladder dysfunction
- Emotional problems (including depression/anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or feelings of hopelessness)
- Diarrhea, constipation, and other chronic and/or idiopathic digestive problems

How to Combine DMSO with Castor Oil
When working with castor oil in any form, it’s important to note that castor oil is very hard to get out of fabrics. As such, we generally recommend that you prepare by putting an old towel or sheet underneath the area of the body where you’re planning to apply the castor oil, and wear clothes that you don’t care about getting stained. It’s also wise to keep a 100% cotton cloth dipped in a warm baking soda and water mixture nearby so that you can easily and safely wipe your hands clean after application (castor oil doesn’t soak into the skin quite like other oils do, so it can be difficult to do anything during your castor oil treatment unless you have a plan to rinse your hands off). When using DMSO, it’s important that you use a pure cotton cloth for this part, with clean water, since DMSO will absorb dyes from other fabrics. The Alive-N-Healthy DMSO Guidebook - Buy Here!
You can apply castor oil with or without DMSO to any area of the body where you feel pain. Alternatively, you can choose to target areas where you have scars or adhesions to try and heal these. Some people choose to both apply the castor oil and DMSO directly to pain points, as well as to areas with scars and adhesions.
DMSO and castor oil can be combined using the following techniques (note that we’ve not included castor oil packs as an option here, since doing a full oil pack isn’t necessary when using DMSO; the DMSO enhances the absorption of the castor oil in a similar way that heat does when using a castor oil pack):
- Premade DMSO + Castor Oil Mixture - Prepare a clean glass container (the mixture should not come in physical contact with any metal lid or plastics; dropper bottles are a good choice). Fill ¾ of the container with castor oil, and the remaining ¼ with 99.9% DMSO. Place in a cool, dark place, and remove to use only when needed.
- Direct Application - Prepare your space, and start by applying the castor oil to the treatment area. Apply liberally. Then, put a few drops of DMSO on the treatment area where you’ve just applied the castor oil. Rub the DMSO in; you can do a gentle massage if you’d like, but it’s not necessary. Then, sit back and let the DMSO and castor oil absorb into your skin.
Apply the castor oil and DMSO mixture at least once daily, and aim to do this for 4-6 weeks. After 4-6 weeks, you may continue to use castor oil with DMSO daily if you feel that it’s beneficial, or reduce the applications to only 3-5 times per week for another 4-6 weeks. Again, as mentioned above, longer-term cases of chronic pain and/or scars and adhesions that are older than a couple years may take longer to heal, so keep this in mind when deciding how long to continue with these castor oil + DMSO treatments.
DMSO can sometimes cause the skin to become dry when used on its own, but generally, dry skin isn’t a problem when you combine DMSO with castor oil, even if a person applies this combination multiple times per day. In any case, if you do experience dryness while using DMSO with castor oil, either dilute your DMSO with some clean, fresh water before applying OR eliminate the DMSO and use only castor oil for a few days until the dryness clears up.
Note that castor oil should only be applied topically, and should not be taken internally for adhesions. The castor oil that you choose should be hexane-free, organic, and cold-pressed in order to offer any medicinal benefit. In age-appropriate quantities, castor oil can be safely used topically, with or without DMSO, in children, babies, the elderly, and during pregnancy and lactation.
