How and Why Phototherapy for Autism and Autoimmunity Works
Melanosomes are tiny melanin-containing packets found in certain cells of the skin. In humans, melanosomes can move around inside the cells using “pseudopodia” or “pseudo-feet” that allow them to move from melanocytes into one of about 36 keratinocytes that are directly connected to it. The movement of melanosomes to the outer periphery of its target area makes cells appear darker. The movement of melanosomes to the inner core of a cell makes the cell appear lighter. In some animals the movement of melanosomes is spurred by the release of hormones while in others, it is activated through the nervous system. This gives the animal the ability to change color either to capture certain wavelengths of light or energy (visible or otherwise) for healing purposes, to signal other members of the species about some form of danger, or to protect the body from damaging wavelengths of light or energy.
In animals like the big brown bat, melanin pigmentation of the pineal gland increases when the bat is exposed to constant darkness suggesting that the theory that melanin is only present in the body to protect it from sunlight is utterly flawed. An animal that is exposed to constant darkness does not need more melanin to protect it from sun exposure. But an animal that is in constant darkness might benefit from having more melanin as a sensing molecule that directly connects to the sympathetic nervous system. Melanin may, in fact, behave like a “sixth sense” via the sympathetic nervous system and its ability to communicate via the sympathetic nervous system with hormone-releasing endocrine glands.

Is UV Light Dangerous or Is It Medicine?
Indeed, melanin does seem to behave like a form of armor against toxic forms of radiation, which is best exemplified by the fact that certain fungi are able to grow inside nuclear reactors as a result of their melanin content (because the melanin functions like armor against toxic forms of radiation). But while melanin can protect the body from toxic forms of radiation, ultraviolet wavelengths of sunlight are not always “toxic” to the human body. In fact, ultraviolet wavelengths of light are used to detoxify jaundiced babies whose skin is yellow demonstrating the general rule that complementary colors of light are the most useful in the treatment of disease. In other words, yellow skin would warrant the use of blue-violet light.
Ultraviolet light as a medicine is also used in combination with coal tar (a black pigment) and the plant-derived, synthetic form of psoralen to treat the autoimmune disease psoriasis in conventional medicine. So, because Big Pharma institutions use ultraviolet light to cure disease, it isn’t fair for Big Pharma to also recommend that people categorically avoid the sun and its ultraviolet wavelengths of light by applying toxic phthalate-containing sunscreens. When people buy into the idea that they need sunscreen to protect them from the sun, they are funding this kind of propaganda.

Sunlight as Full-Spectrum Light
Sunlight contains all spectrums of light including red and infrared light as well as ultraviolet wavelengths. So sunlight exposure is the most healing form of light. In autoimmune disease sufferers who aren’t sure what light color would best be used for treatment, sunlight is the best option because it contains all of the wavelengths of light.

Let’s return to the idea that melanin production actually increases in the pineal gland in response to darkness though and consider why this might be the case. Let’s assume, for the moment, that melanin production increases not just in bats, but also in the human pineal gland in response to exposure to darkness as well. If melanin is a molecule that functions not just as armor against toxic forms of energy, but also as a molecule that can capture and use beneficial forms of energy, we might assume that darkness contains energy and vibrations that our five sensory organ structures (sans their melanin content) aren’t able capture and translate into useful information or usable forms of energy. If that were true, then melanin would be functioning like a “sixth sensory organ” to pick up information and wavelengths of energy that the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin are not attuned to comprehend or convey by themselves. Indeed, both the ears and the eyes in addition to the skin contain melanin and certain areas of the brain contain neuromelanin. So perhaps melanin is the “sixth sense organ” that connects to the pineal gland or “third eye”.We’ve been taught to fear the sun by an industry, Big Pharma, that benefits profit-wise from our sun avoidance behaviors. But what if sunlight exposure is a key ingredient in healing from autoimmune disease or autism?
What if melanin is a molecule designed to absorb wavelengths of energy that our bodies need in order to be healthy?

Melanin
In this discussion, we’re going to start by talking about melanin, the pigment that’s found in human tissues and in animal skin, hair, fur, and eyes. We’ve already talked a bit about melanin and autism at this link but we’ll expand on the role of melanin in the body now. Melanin causes us to have different hair colors, skin colors, and eye colors. This pigment, melanin, is often discussed in terms of its ability to protect our body from light, rather than for its ability to absorb wavelengths of light. But melanin does both of these things. It can protect the body from damaging forms of energy including ultraviolet radiation as well as other toxic forms of radiation.
There are plenty of racially discriminating discussions out there that talk about melanin, but we’re not looking at melanin in terms of how it looks, but rather in terms of how it functions in our human bodies. Our view is that different configurations of melanin in the skin, eyes, hair, glands, and organs of the body allow people to see and feel things differently to give us a broader, more informed experience of energy and vibrational forms of information. Melanin, after all, captures energy in the form of heat , sound, smell, and light, but it likely captures other wavelengths of energy that are beyond our five sense organs and the normal sensory experience that we call “reality”. For example, melanin receptors in human skin are capable of picking up “smells” in the environment though these smells are not translated into the same experience of “smelling” that we’re familiar with when we use our noses to experience this sense.
