Manuka Honey and Propolis for Chickenpox

The varicella-zoster virus causes chicken pox (also spelled “chickenpox”). This virus belongs to the herpesvirus family. Other herpes viruses, including varicella-zoster, have been studied in terms of their susceptibility to apitherapy and bee products such as manuka honey and propolis. Below we discuss how to use manuka honey for chickenpox treatment along with propolis.

Propolis for Chickenpox

Propolis is a biological substance produced by bees. It has been used for thousands of years as a medicine. Scientists have recently begun studying propolis in the lab to determine its ability to kill the chickenpox virus among other things. It has been studied extensively for its ability to kill herpes virus infections, but propolis also has antiviral activity against varicella-zoster.

Studies have shown that propolis extract has the ability to reduce infectivity of the varicella-zoster virus by 93.9% when used at the proper dose and at the proper time during the cycle of infection. According to research, propolis is most effective as a home treatment for chicken pox when it is administered early in the infection process. For example, if the patient was exposed to chickenpox, the administration of propolis before symptoms begin could reduce the magnitude of the infection. Taking propolis within 24 hours after the first signs of the rash from the chickenpox infection could also reduce symptoms.

Propolis has an anti-viral capability that rivals that of acyclovir except without the side effects that acyclovir can cause.

Administer propolis extract according to the dosing instructions on the product that you’re using.

Manuka Honey for Chickenpox

Both honey and propolis are medicinal agents derived from bees. Honey contains antimicrobial agents and it can be used as a gentle antiseptic for skin wounds. Manuka honey is more powerfully antimicrobial than regular clover honey and can be taken internally as a natural antiviral medicine for chickenpox treatment at home.

Choose a Manuka product with a high Methylgloxal (MGO) number. This will ensure that the product has powerful antiviral activity against the chickenpox virus. Ideally, you should choose a product with an MGO rating above 850.

Though Manuka honey may be slightly more powerful against the varicella-zoster virus, regular clover honey can also be used to treat chickenpox naturally at home too. Both Manuka honey and clover honey can be administered in doses of 0.5 to 2 teaspoons 4 times per day by mouth to children over 1 year of age, but honey may also be used topically on the chicken pox rash itself to prevent secondary infection.
