Can you combine DMSO with magnesium oil? YES!

Magnesium is an important mineral that’s required for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. Many people throughout the world are deficient in magnesium, and supplementation with this nutrient can not only reverse the symptoms of undiagnosed or misdiagnosed magnesium deficiency, but can also support health and healing even in cases where a formal magnesium deficiency isn’t present. For reference, popular sources acknowledge that magnesium deficiency may be present in up to 15% of the general population. This number increases to 20% in hospitalized patients, and up to 65% in critically ill patients.  Magnesium combines very well with DMSO and when you use these two things together, you increase the potency of magnesium as a medicinal nutrient in the body. Below we discuss how to use magnesium and DMSO together to overcome fibromyalgia and more naturally.

Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms

Common symptoms of a magnesium deficiency may include:

  • Fatigue and tiredness
  • Generalized weakness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Cardiovascular problems
    • Heart rhythm abnormalities (such as atrial fibrillation)
    • Ventricular arrhythmias (including torsades de pointes)
    • Cardiac ischemia
    • Atrial and ventricular premature systoles
    • Electrocardiogram abnormalities
  • Nervous system problems
    • Tremors
    • Paresthesias
    • Heart palpitations
    • Tetany
    • Vertical nystagmus
    • Choreoathetosis
    • Cerebellar ataxia (only in severe cases)
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Calcifications
    • Chondrocalcinosis (calcification of the bone cartilage)
    • Basal ganglia calcification
  • Spasticity
  • Migraine headaches
  • Epileptic seizures
  • Insulin resistance
  • Delirium
  • Apathy
  • Depression / Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Agitation
  • Coma
  • Electrolyte abnormalities
    • Hypocalcemia (low calcium levels)
    • Hypokalemia (low potassium levels)
  • And more…

NOTE: Magnesium deficiency can also increase the risk of digoxin toxicity through the depletion of intracellular potassium levels and the inhibition of the Na-K-ATPase enzyme.

Magnesium Deficiency Differential Diagnosis

Magnesium deficiency, especially when it exists with other nutrient deficiencies, is a primary cause of various health problems. Nutrient therapy can make a huge difference in treating a wide range of health problems. While nutrients may not always be a complete cure, they’re often an extremely important base treatment, without which other therapies may not be as effective.

Conventional medicine doctors have noted that the symptoms of hypomagnesemia (magnesium deficiency) resemble the following conditions closely enough for there to be the potential for misdiagnosis:

  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Pseudohypoparathyroidism
  • Acrodysostosis
  • Blomstrand chondrodysplasia
  • Hypocalcemia (low calcium levels)
  • Hypokalemia (low potassium levels)
What this means is that doctors may diagnose a patient with any of the above diseases when in fact, all the patient needs is magnesium supplementation. Patients who would like to enhance magnesium absorption in the body can combine magnesium with DMSO. Note however, that DMSO can enhance the effects of prescription medications. Do not take DMSO if you are also taking prescription medications.

Magnesium Deficiency Risk Factors

While magnesium deficiency is common in the general population due to mineral depletion in the soil (as well as due to a nutritionally deficient diet for many people), some people may also be at a particular risk of developing magnesium deficiency.

Alcoholics, people who take certain pharmaceutical drugs (such as loop and thiazide diuretics, antibiotics, proton-pump inhibitors, digitalis, ciclosporin, cisplatin, adrenergic drugs, or mycophenolate mofetil), or individuals with specific health problems, including gastrointestinal and kidney disorders or acute pancreatitis, are at a higher risk of developing a deficiency in this essential mineral. Fluoride poisoning and/or deficiencies in selenium, vitamin D, or vitamin B6 may also contribute to the development of magnesium deficiency.

Uses of DMSO + Magnesium

While magnesium can be administered on its own either as an oral supplement, IV treatment, or as magnesium oil applied to the skin, there are certain circumstances where it may be valuable to combine magnesium with DMSO in order to enhance the healing effects of this mineral. An oral magnesium supplement or a moderate amount of magnesium oil, administered without DMSO, can be used daily to maintain magnesium levels in times of health.

The use of DMSO with magnesium has been shown to specifically treat the following health problems:

Online reviews indicate that the use of the Heiltropfen DMSO and Magnesium product can successfully relieve leg cramps within minutes when applied topically to the affected area. Reviewers also mentioned that this particular product was highly effective and worked quickly to treat post-surgical pain, sore muscles, arthritis, neuropathy, injuries, and more.

Intravenous Magnesium Therapy Alternative: DMSO + Magnesium as a Treatment for Magnesium Deficiency

DMSO can also be combined with magnesium oil and applied topically in cases where IV magnesium therapy isn’t available. Intravenous magnesium therapy is useful in cases of true magnesium deficiency, as well as in cases where high-dose magnesium is being used therapeutically to treat a particular health condition. Examples of the health problems caused or aggravated by magnesium deficiency (which may be treated with IV magnesium treatments in a boutique IV therapy clinic OR at home with the use of DMSO + magnesium oil) include:

  • ADHD
  • Anxiety and anxiety disorders
  • Depression and depressive disorders
  • Autism
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Infertility
  • COVID-19
  • Addiction
  • Insomnia and other sleep disturbances
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Osteoporosis
  • Migraine headaches
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Seizures
  • Tremors
  • Muscle spasms, muscle tightness, and/or muscle weakness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Loss of appetite

At-Home Magnesium Sulfate Alternative

Intravenous magnesium sulfate is also commonly used in healthcare scenarios to treat certain serious and/or life-threatening health problems. These health situations where intravenous magnesium sulfate may be used include (but aren’t limited to) the following:

  • Asthma
  • Preeclampsia and eclampsia
  • Organophosphate poisoning
  • Lyme Disease
  • Constipation
  • Acute nephritis
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Premature labor (IV magnesium sulfate is sometimes used as a “tocolytic”, or a substance intended to prevent preterm labor in pregnant women)
    • In cases of premature labor, though magnesium sulfate may not always truly stop the labor from occurring, there have been studies demonstrating that magnesium sulfate administration in cases of premature labor may lower the risk of cerebral palsy in the baby after birth.
  • Torsades de Pointes in Acute Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) patients
  • Barium chloride poisoning
  • Lead poisoning
    • (NOTE: This usage of magnesium sulfate became less common with the development of chelation therapy)
  • Irukandji Syndrome
    • (NOTE: The use of magnesium sulfate in this context is somewhat experimental, but studies show that it may be a promising option to reverse the symptoms of poisoning by the Irukandji jellyfish)
  • Atrial tachycardia
  • Cerebral edema
  • Uterine tetany
  • Toxemia of pregnancy

Of course, please be aware that some of the above health situations are medical emergencies that should be handled in a hospital setting.

DMSO + Magnesium: Medicinal Applications in Babies and Children

It can also be valuable to combine DMSO with magnesium when administering magnesium therapeutically to children, since IV therapy may not always be a viable or desirable option. This can be especially useful in infants or toddlers, but even older children may benefit from the topical application of DMSO with magnesium. Here are some specific situations when you may want to administer DMSO with magnesium to a child:

  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Acute nephritis (magnesium sulfate injections are FDA approved for the treatment of this condition in pediatric patients)

How to Combine DMSO with Magnesium

The popular DMSO brand Heiltropfen has a product that combines 40% magnesium chloride oil with 60% DMSO. If you can obtain this exact product, of course this is convenient, but if this isn’t possible, you can make your own DMSO+magnesium mixture at home. In an amber colored, glass dropper bottle of your choosing, combine 99.9% purity DMSO with pure magnesium oil (use the ratio of 60% DMSO to 40% magnesium oil). Shake well before each use, and store the bottle in a cool, dark place.

Note that another DMSO product available on the market from Herbal Mana combines 99.9% DMSO with magnesium oil at a ratio of 50% DMSO to 50% magnesium oil. This ratio may therefore also be acceptable. If you have dry skin, it may be wise to combine 40% DMSO with 50% magnesium oil and 10% water, since DMSO can be drying. Experiment with the ratios of these 2-3 ingredients based on the guidelines discussed here until you find something that works for you.

If you experience dry skin after applying the DMSO and magnesium mixture, you can apply clean, purified water to the skin immediately after applying this mixture in the future, or alternatively, dilute the mixture with more water in the future until it doesn’t cause your skin to become dry. If needed, apply 100% pure, hexane-free, cold-pressed apricot kernel oil or grapeseed oil to rehydrate the skin in between applications.
