DMSO as a Cure for Schizophrenia, Depression, Anxiety, Dementia, and Other Mental Health Issues

DMSO can help with all of the factors involved in the development of schizophrenia and other severe forms of mental illness.
If you've never heard of DMSO and this is your first experience reading about this miraculous medicine, I need to say that, this is a medicine that changed my life and that has changed the way that I administer medicine in my own home.  But that being said, there's a bit of a learning curve with DMSO use. DMSO has certain properties that make it incredibly useful, but it can also be incredibly dangerous if you aren't willing to learn how to use it safely. This is one of the top 10 medicines that has been covered up expertly by pharmaceutical companies in order to prevent the general public from becoming aware of what it can do in terms of healing serious diseases including mental health issues. If you're looking for a cure for schizophrenia or just an at-home treatment for psychosis that actually works, keep an open mind about DMSO. This is a medicine that may seem like it's too good to be true, but I've been working with it for years and it definitely lives up to its promises if you're willing to learn how to use it properly. Click here for a quick summary of the medicinal effects of DMSO.  DMSO has a broad spectrum of medicinal action on different systems of the body, especially the central nervous system. This over-the-counter drug is used to heal traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. It can be used to prevent paralysis and cognitive or physical impairments due to severe injury to nervous system structures such as nerves, brain, and spinal cord . It is used to treat stroke victims and patients with dementia. DMSO has the ability to detoxify nerve cells that are encumbered by toxins that can cause diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. Recently, studies have also shown that DMSO impacts sleep architecture too. In this discussion, we’ll detail how DMSO changes behavior and mental health in human animal studies.

DMSO is often used as a vehicle for efficient drug delivery. It increases the permeability of tissues and it works well as a solvent for many medications. Combining DMSO with certain medications can make it possible to administer them via the skin (DMSO, for example is used in the transdermal application of nicotine in nicotine patches). DMSO strengthens medicines when it is combined with them, so this medication has the ability to revolutionize conventional medicine. Though DMSO is widely used in cryopreservation, stem cell therapies, and as a medium for storing transplant organs among other things, its effects on mental and emotional health and behavior is not widely known or acknowledged despite studies in the 1960s showing that DMSO was able to cure 18 out of 25 psychosis patients. The remaining schizophrenia patients had significantly reduced agitation such that they were finally able to engage in occupational therapy.

Sleep Architecture Changes Caused by DMSO

Many people administer DMSO daily or even several times per day to reduce pain or to treat severe injuries. When DMSO is administered daily at a high enough dose, it can positively change the way our bodies respond to light and darkness and alter our sleep cycles. The changes that DMSO makes in sleep architecture may explain to some extent how this medicine helps reduce dementia and psychosis symptoms naturally.

According to studies, DMSO does not always impact sleep / wake cycles, but at high enough doses, it does decrease periods of quiet wakefulness, and increase episodes of slow wave sleep. In order for sleep to be impacted, however, DMSO must be administered at a concentration of 15% or higher at a dose of 5 mL per kilogram of the patient’s body weight or higher.

Slow wave sleep, also known as “deep sleep”, consists of 20-50% delta wave activity. It is stage 3 of non-rapid eye movement sleep that typically lasts between 70-90 minutes during the early hours of the night. During slow wave sleep, there is moderate muscle tone and either slow eye movement or no eye movement and no genital activity. Slow wave sleep is necessary and beneficial for memory consolidation and in theory, through the promotion of slow wave sleep, DMSO may be able to reduce symptoms of trauma by helping the brain and body process difficult memories and experiences..

An increase in slow wave sleep caused by administration of DMSO would increase the amount of time spent processing memories during the night. Slow wave sleep has been shown to improve declarative memory which is a conscious type of memory that involves acquisition, retrieval, and consolidation of facts, experiences, and concepts.

Behavioral Changes Caused by DMSO

Studies have shown that DMSO significantly reduces locomotor activity at concentrations of 32%-64% in animal models. In humans, DMSO has had remarkable results in the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. It significantly reduces agitation and can also act as a cure for psychosis in some patients. In research exploring the mechanism of action of DMSO as a cure for dementia, scientists have demonstrated that DMSO modulates glutamate and acetylcholine neurotransmission which delays Aβ-induced paralysis in Alzheimer’s patients. DMSO may work through a similar mechanism of action in patients with psychosis and severe mental illness.

Glutamate

Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter that plays a role in a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders including depression. Some scientists believe that glutamate imbalances and dysregulation in the gastrointestinal tract as well as in the brain likely plays a role in depression.

Acetylcholine

Acetylcholine also impacts neuronal excitability as well as synaptic plasticity, transmission, and the coordinated firing of neurons. Acetylcholine tends to strengthen behaviors that help people adapt to their environment and it decreases responses to stimuli in the environment that doesn’t require an immediate action. This neurotransmitter works centrally as a neuromodulator in the brain, but on the periphery of the body, it acts as an excitatory neurotransmitter.

DMSO: Alternative Treatment for Psychosis, Autism, Depression, and Anxiety

DMSO has been used in humans to treat schizophrenia, bipolar psychosis, autism, and anxiety with excellent effects. It may work, in part by promoting better sleep, more clarity in conscious thought, a moderate sedative action that does not cause drowsiness, and mild stimulation without euphoria. DMSO may also help the body process trauma to reduce symptoms of psychosis naturally. DMSO generally improves mood too, according to studies.

The antipsychotic effect of DMSO can be observed between the 1st and 7th days of treatment according to the dosing instructions that we provide below. The methyl-group in dimethyl sulfoxide may also play a role in altering the expression of certain genes. Some people have had noteworthy success using DMSO to treat autism, perhaps due to its ability to alter gene expression through methylation.

DMSO: Alternative Treatment for Schizophrenia

In one study involving 25 schizophrenia patients, DMSO administration caused 14 acute schizophrenia patients and 4 chronic schizophrenia patients to go into complete remission from the disease. These patients were discharged from the hospital after treatment. The remaining 7 schizophrenia patients were significantly less agitated and more cooperative following treatment with DMSO. These 7 patients were not able to do occupational therapy prior to DMSO treatment. After DMSO treatment, occupational therapy was possible.

DMSO and vitamin B3 for Schizophrenia

Niacin or vitamin B3 has been given in high doses to cure schizophrenia. Though we have not found studies into the combination of DMSO and niacin / niacinamide, we do know that DMSO is often used on nicotine patches to make it possible for nicotine to be administered transdermally. Nicotine is a synthetic and toxic form of the nutrient niacin. In theory, one could combine DMSO and niacinamide as a natural cure for schizophrenia as DMSO combines well with other B vitamins like vitamin B12.

DMSO: Alternative Treatment for Bipolar Disorder

One study described the use of DMSO to treat 4 bipolar patients with psychosis. The DMSO significantly reduced their agitation.

DMSO: Alternative Treatment for Anxiety

DMSO has also been used to treat anxiety. Scientific studies have shown that this substance reduces anxiety due to a variety of causes. DMSO has a moderate sedative action, but it does not cause drowsiness, clumsiness, or hypnotic effects.

DMSO Dosage for Mental Health

Administer pharmaceutical grade DMSO 99.9% at a dose of 5 to 60 mL given two to three times topically each day or dilute the DMSO 99.9% down to a 50% to 80% concentration with filtered water and administer orally at the same dose. In clinical settings, DMSO can be administered at a 50% to 80% concentration diluted in saline at a dose of 5 mL intramuscularly two to three times daily.

Studies have shown that DMSO is perhaps less potent when given orally even when given at the same dose as topical application. Topical administration may be more powerful and effective when DMSO is being given as an alternative treatment for mental health issues.
