Herbal Remedy for Gestational Diabetes: Silybum marianum / Milk Thistle
"The Natural Women's Health Guide... to Pregnancy - BUY HERE!"
Silybum marianum is most famous for its ability to detoxify and heal the liver, but it has also been studied for its ability to improve milk production during breastfeeding. During pregnancy, detoxification of the liver is extremely important as the body has additional toxins to process while building another human being. The liver is the primary organ of detoxification in the body and keeping this organ working smoothly can help the bowels moving as well which can get rid of constipation during pregnancy or at least significantly lessen it.Often, women develop gallstones (which can be released naturally using the Hulda Clark Gallbladder Cleanse during pregnancy) which is related closely to liver congestion so having an herbal remedy for liver detoxification can be extremely useful in the treatment of a number of pregnancy-related conditions.

Silybum marianum: Herbal Remedy for Gestational Diabetes
Many people don’t realize that the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are all connected via the common hepatic duct. If the liver or gallbladder becomes congested with bile sludge or gallstones, these stones may get lodged in the common hepatic duct during pregnancy (or at any time in a person’s lifespan, actually). If a stone gets lodged, even if bile is still able to pass around it, it can cause liver or gallbladder congestion as well as pancreatic enzyme congestion. Gestational diabetes is often caused by liver or gallbladder congestion or gallstones.Let me explain:
The pancreas is responsible for producing both insulin as well as pancreatic enzymes that are used to digest food in the digestive system. There are cells in the pancreas that produce insulin and different cells that produce pancreatic enzymes. The cells that produce insulin are surrounded by the cells that produce enzymes. If the pancreatic cells produce enzymes and release these enzymes into the common hepatic duct when the hepatic duct is clogged by a gallstone or bile sludge, the pancreatic enzymes can get backed up into the pancreas. This can then cause the cells that produce insulin to be damaged which in turn, causes gestational diabetes.
Though conventional medicine says that the cells that produce insulin cannot be healed or regrown, this is patently false. A number of herbs can regrow the pancreatic cells that produce insulin including Melissa officinalis. Click here to read more about the use of Melissa officinalis as a cure for gestational diabetes. If you’ve been diagnosed with gestational diabetes though, you may want to take both Silybum marianum along with an herbal remedy to cure diabetes like Melissa officinalis. While the Silybum marianum will relieve some of the liver congestion and gallstone obstruction of the common hepatic duct, Melissa officinalis will regrow the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas.
Silybum marianum Safety During Pregnancy
Silymarin is a substance that’s derived from Silybum marianum, also known as milk thistle. In animal studies, Silybum marianum has no major toxicity that’s been observed. At therapeutic doses, it is safe in humans and well-tolerated, even at high doses (700 mg three time daily for 24 weeks in non-pregnant patients).
Studies in pregnant humans and during breastfeeding have shown that Silybum marianum doesn’t cause any type of functional or physical changes in a developing fetus or baby. As such, it has been reasonably demonstrated that Silybum marianum can be used safely during pregnancy and breastfeeding at a lower dose than what’s normally prescribed for non-pregnant adults.
Silymarin marianum Dosage During Pregnancy
Animal studies have shown that doses between 100-300 mg/kg body weight do not have a negative effect on fetal development or on breastfeeding offspring. Other research indicates that milk thistle can be taken at a dose of 1-3 grams per daily in dry herb form, or at a dose of 1.5-10mL per day as a tincture. It should ideally be taken before eating warm food. Note that this herb combines well with peppermint in terms of both flavor and medicinal application.Click here to subscribe to the Living Database!
