How Iodine Affects Bone Health and Connective Tissue Health

Though vitamin K2 / MK-7 is perhaps the most important nutrient that can cure osteoporosis naturally, iodine deficiency that causes thyroid dysfunction also plays a role in this disease.
As we’ve discussed in other places, vitamin K2 / Menaquinone-7 / MK-7 is a nutrient that is often deficient but that has the power to cure osteoporosis, remove plaque from arteries naturally, and also remineralize the teeth if taken in proper doses. Vitamin K2 is an essential part of the Iodine Therapy Protocol as without vitamin K2 / MK-7, the body can’t move calcium from the blood supply into the bone tissues. Calcium that lingers in the blood supply inhibits the absorption of both iodine and iron. So, anyone who is hoping to benefit from Iodine Therapy should be taking vitamin K2 / MK-7 which will do wonders for bone health and dental health. But what about iodine itself as a nutrient that promotes bone health by itself?

Bone Density and Thyroid Health: What’s the Connection?

The bones and teeth are archetypal T3-target tissues. Bone tissues are exquisitely sensitive to thyroid hormone levels which is obvious during linear growth, child development, and in observing adult bone maintenance and turnover. When levels of the active thyroid hormone T3 is too high, adult bone tissues are broken down. The opposite is true in children with high T3 levels. Bone tissues in children are anabolized or built up in response to high T3 levels during periods of growth.

Essentially, if thyroid hormone levels are imbalanced, bone density is impacted which can increase the risk of fracture in patients. Both an excess of thyroid hormones and a deficiency of thyroid hormones can increase the risk that patients young or old may break their bones. And of course, when we’re talking about either underactive thyroid or overactive thyroid, we’re really talking about iodine deficiency because in the vast majority of patients who have either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, iodine deficiency (as well as bromine and fluorine toxicity) are at the core of this issue. The go-to cure for hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism is Lugol’s iodine.

Osteoarthritis and Thyroid Health Connection

Recently, thyrotoxicosis and abnormal thyroid hormone signaling has been identified as a risk factor in the development of osteoarthritis. Thyroid hormone levels go out of control when the body is deficient in iodine and/or toxic with halide exposures to bromide or fluoride.

One might wonder how it’s possible for there to be so many scientific studies to document the connection between osteoarthritis and thyroid gland function or bone tissue health in general and thyroid health and for doctors to be so completely unaware of the fact that iodine (and vitamin K2 supplementation) can cure these disease processes. Most of the funding for scientific studies goes toward figuring out how to properly dose the thyroid hormone pharmaceuticals. Scientists are not being paid to question whether iodine might cure osteoarthritis or osteoporosis. Rather, funding is only available to study a narrow scope that looks at the connection between thyroid hormone levels and bone health without ever considering that a simple nutrient deficiency might be at the core of the problem.

Nonetheless, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis has been strongly correlated with arthritis and other connective tissue diseases.

Fibromyalgia and Thyroid Disease

When one looks closely at the data regarding bone health, connective tissue health, and thyroid gland health, a pattern starts to emerge. People who are deficient in iodine have poor thyroid gland function. They may have either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Poor thyroid function may be symptomatic or it may be barely noticeable. In any case, patients who have poor thyroid function can feel pain in their joints or in their connective tissues. They experience profound fatigue and brain fog. Thus, fibromyalgia is another connective tissue disease that is often caused by a combination of iodine deficiency and bromide/fluoride toxicity.  Though a number of doctors and scientists have noted the connection between fibromyalgia and thyroid disease, few of those professionals know that Lugol's iodine is the cure for thyroid disease. So while there are plenty of studies documenting the connection between thyroid disease and fibromyalgia, there are practically no studies demonstrating that iodine can be used to cure fibromyalgia naturally.

Thyroid Hormones and Bone Health

As it turns out, thyroid hormone levels impact normal skeletal development and normal bone metabolism, so iodine deficiency that causes the thyroid gland to malfunction will also have an impact on bone health. Severe hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), for example, causes high bone turnover osteoporosis. Even subclinical hyperthyroidism (which is defined as low thyroid stimulating hormone / TSH levels) that produces no noticeable symptoms can impact normal bone turnover to cause decreased bone mineral density and an increased risk of fracture. This is particularly true in postmenopausal women.

So there’s a connection between thyroid hormones and bone health. And the vast majority of thyroid diseases are caused by iodine deficiency and bromide / fluoride toxicity. So, if you’ve been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, an autoimmune thyroid disease, Hashimoto’s, etc. then you need to work with Lugol’s iodine along with the supportive nutrients that ensure that the iodine will work properly in the body.

One of the main causes of subclinical hyperthyroidism that produces few or no symptoms is improper dosing of thyroxin and TSH suppressive L-thyroxine doses. Doctors will prescribe thyroxin and L-thyroxine to treat benign thyroid nodules or thyroid carcinoma (thyroid cancer) that can be treated and cured using Lugol’s iodine. In prescribing thyroxin and L-thyroxine at an improper dose, bone mineral density is lessened and patients become more susceptible to bone fractures. Patients who are prescribed thyroid medications not only must carry the extra expense of buying these drugs chronically, but they also have no hope of healing the thyroid gland, which is entirely possible using Iodine Therapy and natural nutrient supplements that contribute to normal bone health. Because thyroxin and L-thyroxine do not treat the underlying health condition, as the nutrient iodine can, the thyroid gland continues to malfunction and patients are at an increased risk of developing osteoporosis.

Hypothyroidism, in contrast to hyperthyroidism and subclinical hyperthyroidism, causes lower bone turnover and a reduction in osteoclastic bone resorption as well as a reduction in osteoblastic activity. This can lead to an abnormal increase in bone mineralization.

In summary, thyroid hormone levels have a powerful impact on bone health. In terms of bone density, hypothyroidism is more favorable than hyperthyroidism, but who wants to be hypothyroid? That’s hardly “good news” for someone suffering from hypothyroidism. A number of studies have been done trying to establish clear dosing recommendations to prevent bone density reduction, but proper dosing of thyroid hormones varies from person to person. Rather than giving patients thyroid hormones, a better approach would be to administer Lugol’s iodine 2% along with supportive nutrients to heal the thyroid gland so that it can produce thyroid hormones naturally. This will not only cure thyroid disease, but also ensure that bones have the proper density and form.
