Salvia officinalis is not the most powerful antidiabetic herb that we discuss at this blog, but it's still worthy of mention as one of the natural diabetes foods that can be used in the diet.

Herbal Remedy for Diabetes: Salvia officinalis

Salvia officinalis is found throughout the Americas, Asia, and the Mediterranean. It is used in cooking, as an ornamental herb, and also as an herbal medicine for diabetes and other diseases.

Salvia officinalis: Herbal Remedy for Diabetes

When used properly, Salvia officinalis, also known as sage (a savory herb that is used to flavor food), works as an herb that reduces blood sugar levels. Scientific studies have specifically shown that this herb is able to reduce blood sugar within two hours after a meal. It also has cholesterol lowering effects. As one of several herbs in this list that can be used as a food treatment for diabetes, Salvia officinalis has special appeal. One could, for example, make a point of consuming sage on a regular basis along with Moringa oleifera, the fruit powder of the Baobab tree and other natural diabetes foods.  Though sage does not have the same range of medicinal effects against the symptoms of diabetes, it can still be integrated into a treatment protocol for diabetes by using it in the diet.  Salvia officinalis by itself does not have an effect on fasting blood sugar levels or on glycosylated hemoglobin levels, but it does lower blood pressure naturally. On the other hand though, studies have examined an effective herbal combination to treat diabetes that included Salvia officinalis along with the following:

  • Allium sativum / garlic
  • Cinnamomum zeylanicum / cinnamon
  • Nigella sativa / black cumin
  • Punica granatum / pomegranate
  • Salvia officinalis / sage
  • Teucrium polium / felty germander

This polyherbal formula is able to block the increase of blood glucose to prevent diabetes from progressing.
