Castor Oil Packs for Threatened Miscarriage and Vaginal Bleeding
Castor oil packs are a time-tested, gentle treatment that can be used to prevent miscarriage as long as the fetus is healthy. Ideally, you should combine the topical application of hexane free castor oil with the administration of an herb like Shatavari / Asparagus racemosus that contains phytoestrogens and other substances that can help maintain pregnancy. A castor oil pack is administered externally to the skin overlying the uterus in the even of a threatened miscarriage. A castor oil pack consists of the following elements:- Hexane-free, organic castor oil
- Cotton flannel or a castor oil pack wrap
- Heating pad (set to the lowest setting)
If you are using the cotton flannel, be sure to place a plastic bag over the flannel to protect your heating pad from the castor oil. If you are using a castor oil pack wrap, you can apply the heating pad directly over the top of the pack wrap. Use the heating pad on the lowest possible setting for only 5 minutes. Turn off the heating pad after 5 minutes to avoid super-heating the abdomen during pregnancy. Wait for 15 minutes. Turn the heating pad back on for 5 minutes. Wait for another 15 minutes to allow the body to cool again, etc. If you have dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), you can skip the cotton flannel and the heating pad and instead add a 3 drops of pharmaceutical grade 99% DMSO to 1 tablespoon of hexane free castor oil. Spread this DMSO-castor oil mixture over the abdomen and allow it to soak in for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, you can apply another 1 tablespoon plus 3 drops of DMSO to abdomen again.
Heating the skin opens the pores to make it easier for the castor oil to pass through the skin into the underlying tissues, but during pregnancy, it is actually safer to use DMSO. But if you don’t have DMSO in your medicine cabinet, you can heat the skin to improve pore penetration as long as heating is limited to low heat for 5 minutes or less. Be aware that, even without heat, the castor oil will soak into the skin and go to work on underlying tissues.
How to Stop Vaginal Bleeding During Pregnancy
Obviously, if you are experiencing a lot of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, then you should visit an emergency room for emergency care. Vaginal bleeding in the first trimester is common and it is not always a sign of miscarriage. But during the second trimester, it’s vital that you seek care from a knowledgeable healthcare professional to ensure that vaginal bleeding does not become life threatening. If the fetus is alive and healthy, placental malfunction can cause vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Castor oil is nourishing and it can provide certain nutrients and medicinal substances directly through the skin to encourage the placenta to heal and the uterus to relax. You can administer your castor oil topically to the skin without a heating pad even as you wait in the emergency room for treatment. Castor oil will still soak into the skin even without heat treatment, it just takes a bit longer than if you add DMSO or heat.If you have access to the miscarriage prevention herb, False Unicorn Root / Chamaelirium luteum, you should combine a castor oil pack with the oral administration of this herb.
