Alpha Lipoic Acid to Prevent Miscarriage

Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a natural molecule that acts as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory agent. It is derived from caprylic acid. This supplement is used to treat and manage a number of chronic diseases such as diabetic neuropathy, but it is safe for use in pregnant women and, as it turns out, it can be used to prevent miscarriage or as an at-home treatment for threatened miscarriage.

How to Prevent Miscarriage or Preterm Birth Using Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid acid can be used as a dietary supplement by pregnant women with a history of miscarriage or preterm birth. Studies have shown that, even at higher than normal doses, alpha-lipoic acid is safe for use during pregnancy.

As an immune-modulating substance alpha lipoic acid / ALA and its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) are able to chelate heavy metals, regenerate important antioxidants, and repair molecules in the body that have been damaged by oxidation. Alpha lipoic acid is able to fine-tune certain physiological pathways that can become imbalanced under certain conditions.

Subchorionic Hematoma

Study #1: Synthetic Progesterone Treatment vs. Alpha Lipoic Acid Treatment for Threatened Miscarriage

Subchorionic Hematoma is a serious problem during pregnancy that involves the placenta.  Chorionic hematoma is the pooling of blood between the chorion surrounding the embryo and the uterine wall. It happens in about 3-10% of pregnancies and it is the most common cause of vaginal bleeding during the first trimester. This is a serious issue and it needs to be handled with care, but often, the subchorionic / chorionic hematoma can heal and be resorbed.

Women who develop a subchorionic hematoma have been studied in terms of their response to 400 mg of vaginal progesterone or 10 mg of vaginal alpha lipoic acid. Women who were given 10 mg of vaginal alpha lipoic acid daily had fewer miscarriages and the subchorionic hematoma was resorbed more quickly than in the progesterone group, so this is compelling in terms of an at-home prevention treatment for miscarriage

Study #2: Synthetic Progesterone Treatment vs. Alpha Lipoic Acid Treatment for Threatened Miscarriage

If you’re working with alpha-lipoic acid at home, you won’t administer this supplement vaginally, but it’s okay to take it orally too. In a different study, sixteen pregnant women were given either 200 mg of progesterone twice daily (400 mg total) via vaginal suppository or an oral dose of 300 mg of alpha lipoic acid twice daily (600 mg total). In this study, both groups of women improved with progesterone and alpha lipoic acid treatment, but the patients who received both progesterone and alpha lipoic acid improved the most. In these patients, subchorionic hematoma resorption was much faster and superior to the resorption process and speed of healing in women who didn’t receive both progesterone or alpha lipoic acid.

Why Alpha Lipoic Acid Works as a Natural Treatment for Threatened Miscarraige due to Subchorionic Hematoma

Alpha lipoic acid seems to speed up the resorption of subchorionic hematoma naturally by restoring balance in health situations involving cytokines, growth factors, and other molecules that can damage the placenta.

At-Home Natural Miscarriage Prevention and Self-Medication for Threatened Miscarriage

In pregnant women who have been diagnosed with subchorionic hematoma who wish to self-medicate at home using natural substances, alpha lipoic acid should be administered at 300 mg twice daily (600 mg total). Wild yam root lotion can be used as a natural and safer alternative to progesterone treatments at the doctor’s office. Shatavari / Asparagus racemosus can also be administered to raise a woman’s natural progesterone levels. Administer 1000 mg of Asparagus racemosus / Shatavari twice daily (2000 mg total) as an herbal remedy for threatened abortion along with Alpha Lipoic Acid at 300 mg twice daily). Continue taking the Shatavari / Asparagus racemosus for 5-7 days and then discontinue. Administer wild yam root as about 1/8 teaspoon of lotion to the skin.
