How to Prevent Measles at Home / How to Treat Measles at Home

Parents that opt not to get their child vaccinated against measles may be surprised to learn that there are some very compelling studies showing that measles can be prevented or treated at home using nutrients and herbs among other things. Below we discuss some of the most important natural remedies for measles that parents can use either prophylactically in some cases or to reduce the severity and duration of measles symptoms.   When the body is infected with a pathogen, the immune system drains resources out of the body to launch a suitable defense. The immune system can use up 30% of the body’s nutrients that are in circulation when an infection occurs. This is something that all parents need to keep in mind if their child develops a severe infection like measles. Indeed, parents who opt to not get their child vaccinated against measles know that they still need to know how to treat measles at home naturally. Diet and nutrient supplements are potent medicines against viral infections like measles.

Lugol’s iodine supplementation is essential in the prevention of measles. Immune system function depends a great deal on nutrient iodine as a way to protect the body from invading pathogens. When the immune system is under attack, it uses up about 30% of the body’s nutrients that are in circulation, which means that children must be properly nourished during infection to be able to overcome the disease. Children with measles can benefit from vitamin A supplementation as well as vitamin C supplementation. Parents should consider giving their child a cod liver oil supplement, which contains all of the fat soluble vitamins along with a vitamin A supplement for measles.

The Pancreas and the Liver in Measles Infection

In addition to the obvious need for nutrient supplements and a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables and organic meats (which are needed due to their essential amino acid content), a child (or an adult) with measles should also pay special attention to the liver and the pancreas as these two organs are often involved in the progression of measles.

How to Support the Pancreas to Prevent Measles Complications

Studies have shown that children who are critically ill with an infection like measles often have elevated pancreatic enzyme levels and high insulin levels as well. Both pancreatic enzymes and insulin are produced in the pancreas. Scientists believe that elevated levels of pancreatic enzymes and insulin are due to acute pancreatitis (pancreas inflammation) which is present in many people (both children and adults) who develop measles.

Lugol’s Iodine and Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation

While in some health-related situations that involve pancreatic disease such as pancreatic cancer, pancreatic enzymes can be beneficial and supportive. However, in diseases that involve acute pancreatitis / pancreatic inflammation due to infection, the use of pancreatic enzymes as supplements can actually be damaging. Supporting the pancreas during a measles infection, for example, would include supplementation with Lugol’s iodine and Coenzyme Q10. Both the molecular iodine in Lugol’s iodine formulations and Coenzyme Q10 have been scientifically proven to reduce the severity of acute pancreatitis by providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support to the pancreas. Lugol’s iodine is well-known as one of the most important nutrients that support immune system function as well and coenzyme Q10 is used in the body to generate energy to fight infection, among other things. Studies have shown the coenzyme Q10 reduces the death of pancreatic enzyme-producing cells as well as pancreatic inflammation. Scientists have noted that the use of coenzyme Q10 in situations involving acute pancreatitis can reduce damage to the pancreas while also reducing any associated lung problems by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory cell infiltration.

Coenzyme Q10 Dosage in Children It is nearly impossible to overdose on coenzyme 10. Most people, including children, particularly children with a severe infection can benefit a great deal from high doses of coenzyme 10. In children under 5 years of age, administer 75-300 mg of coenzyme Q10 daily. In children over 5 years of age, administer 200-400 mg of coenzyme Q10 daily. In children over 10 years of age, administer 400-600 mg of coenzyme Q10. Choose a powdered coenzyme Q10 product that is easy to administer to children.

Rebuilding Health after Measles Infection

During acute pancreatitis, the pancreas produces too many pancreatic enzymes. This can cause the lung tissues and mucus to dry out. The mucus in the lungs becomes less able to “flow”. Taking a pancreatic enzyme supplement at this time during the infection would be a bad idea. Indeed, some pancreatic enzymes like trypsin have been shown to make it easier for viruses like COVID to enter cells and cause infection. In order for the COVID spike protein to become infectious to a human cell, it must be cleaved by a proteolytic enzyme such as trypsin. While it might seem smart to supplement with pancreatic enzymes to support the pancreas during an active measles infection, in fact, it could be potentially much more damaging to the lungs and the patient’s general health.

That being said, doctors have noted that after acute pancreatitis subsides following a severe infection like measles, patients often have a hard time producing enough pancreatic enzymes. This can pose problems for proper recovery because pancreatic enzymes digest food down to component nutrients that the body can absorb. Without pancreatic enzymes, the body can’t absorb the nutrients that it must absorb in order to heal. This creates a downward spiral effect that can often be alleviated, at least to some extent, through the administration of pancreatic enzymes and sometimes ox bile as well, but not until the acute pancreatitis has ended.

Click here to read more about Enzyme Therapy.

One study involving 56 patients demonstrated that supplementation with pancreatic enzymes positively affected the course of acute pancreatitis if the supplements were administered during the period when patients began eating normally again after a serious infection. During acute pancreatitis, which is common in measles infection as we’ve noted above, the pancreas may actually over-produce pancreatic enzymes. It wouldn’t be good to supplement with certain pancreatic enzymes during the peak of a measles infection for this reason. On the other hand though, pancreatic enzyme supplementation may be extremely beneficial as the measles infection starts to go away.

How to Support the Liver to Prevent Measles Complications

Hepatitis or liver inflammation, is also common in patients with measles along with inflammation of the ileum and appendix. While measles is often regarded colloquially as a disease of the skin (because the characteristic measles rash is the most obvious symptom of measles), in fact, many medical professionals regard measles as a respiratory disease because this infection is spread through the air. In reality, skin manifestations of measles as a disease is largely due to the effects of this disease on the liver. The risk of pneumonia as a measles complication is related to acute pancreatitis in measles. In acute pancreatitis, two of the major complications are pneumonia (a lung disease) and diarrhea. In measles, two of the major complications are pneumonia and diarrhea as well. One of the problems that can occur when a child develops diarrhea is the inability to absorb nutrients. Nutrient deficiency is a known and widely accepted issue in measles infection. The liver and the pancreas are directly connected to each other via the common bile duct. As such, these two organs have a large impact on each other particularly when one or the other is not functioning optimally.

How to Support the Liver and the Pancreas: NAC and L-Cysteine

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) or L-Cysteine are supplements that are nutrient precursors to the creation of glutathione, one of the most important and prolific detoxifying agents in the body. NAC and L-Cysteine thin mucus so that it flows more easily while simultaneously enhancing our body’s ability to detox in a general way (via glutathione).

Click here to read more about NAC and L-Cysteine as a cure for serious respiratory disease. Note that these nutrient supplements can also be useful in the treatment and prevention of measles and measles complications, especially pneumonia. These nutrient supplements support both the liver and the pancreas as well as other organs in the body during measles infection. Individuals who take NAC or L-Cysteine supplements at a dose of 2400 mg - 2700 mg per day (in divided doses of 600-1000 mg per dose) for adults and children ages 8 and up. In children between 4-8 years of age, administer 400-1000 mg of NAC per day in 3-4 divided doses. Start with the lowest dose and increase the dose slowly while observing how your child responds to it. In children younger than 4 years of age, administer 100-600 mg per day starting with the lowest dose and increasing the dose slowly over time to observe your child’s response to it. Babies who are being breastfed can receive this medicine through their mother’s breastmilk. NAC while breastfeeding can be administered to mothers at a dose of up to 3000 mg per day (3 divided doses of 1000 mg each).

The liver is the main source for glutathione. The liver is the only organ that is able to produce cysteine, a precursor to glutathione. NAC supplementation increases the body’s access to cysteine which, in turn, increases the rate at which the body can produce glutathione.

Methionine is an amino acid that must be present in order for the liver to produce cysteine and in turn, glutathione. A deficiency of methionine in the diet can thus lead to a deficiency of cysteine and glutathione which can then predispose a person to disease by making it difficult or impossible to remove pathogens from the body.

When the liver produces glutathione, this substance is used to maintain an inter-organ balance by dumping the glutathione into the blood supply and into the bile. Glutathione acts as a powerful antioxidant in the body to keep reactive oxygen species at balanced levels in the blood supply and in the digestive system. Many of our readers are probably familiar with Reactive Oxygen Species medicines such as ozone therapy, food grade hydrogen peroxide therapy, methylene blue, and chlorine dioxide. These Reactive Oxygen Species medicines work and are powerful tools that can be used as at-home treatments for measles and other infectious diseases because they release reactive oxygen species that are similar or identical to the reactive oxygen species produced by white blood cells as a front line defense against infectious pathogens.

At the same time though, while Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) medicines like Chlorine Dioxide Solution are perhaps the simplest and most powerful natural treatments for measles because of the power of reactive oxygen species as antibiotics that easily kill pathogens, the balance between antioxidants and reactive oxygen species (which are oxidants that can be canceled out by anti-oxidants) must be kept in check. Chlorine Dioxide Solution, for example, would be an excellent choice as a medicine during the early stages of measles, when the natural levels of oxidants in the body is still relatively low. However, as an infection progresses, antioxidants become more important than oxidant / ROS medicines to prevent damage to organs that are already struggling under the stress of infection. Damaging, non-medicinal reactive oxygen species known as free radicals can cause damage to the liver and to the pancreas which in turn, causes a patient to become overloaded with toxins and prone to severe respiratory disease such as pneumonia due to thickened mucus in the liver and in the lungs. So while ROS medicines can be very useful in helping a child or an adult cure measles quickly at the onset of the disease, prior to the manifestation of the measles rash, it would be better to use antioxidants like high-dose vitamin C as a treatment for measles if the infection has progressed to the point of a cytokine storm and a skin rash.

Note that Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate (NADPH) is believed to be a substance that makes it possible for the body to recycle glutathione.

How Measles Infection Impacts the Spleen and Lymphatic System

In 1922, there was a measles epidemic in St. Louis, MO that made it possible for Dr. Bleyer to observe 264 measles patients under the age of 12 (most were under age 7). This doctor made the unexpected discovery that at the onset of the measles rash, the spleen suddenly become inflamed. As soon as the rash disappeared in each child, the spleen receded back to its normal side. On the day just before the measles skin rash appeared, only 2 percent of the children in Dr. Bleyer’s care had an enlarged spleen. On the day the rash first appeared, Dr. Bleyer could feel the inflammation of the spleen in the abdomen of 24% of his patients. By the second day after the rash appeared, the spleen could be felt easily (due to its inflammation) in 43% of the children. Peak enlargement of the spleen occurred on the 3rd and 4th day after the measles rash appeared.

As we talk about above, the liver, pancreas, and intestines are involved in many of the complications caused by measles, but the spleen and the lymphatic system is a focal point in terms of the measles rash. To support the spleen, nutrients like vitamin B12, vitamin K1, and vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7 form) can be useful. Foods that are high in iron can also support spleen health and the production of healthy red blood cells. Further, patients with measles may benefit from taking desiccated spleen supplements to support the spleen.

Note that there is a spleen-liver connection that has been scientifically studied wherein enlargement of the spleen and non-alcoholic liver disease are strongly correlated. Further, hypersplenism (overactivity of the spleen) causes low cholesterol thus demonstrating that, though the liver plays the most famous role in the regulation of lipid and cholesterol levels, the spleen also plays a role in cholesterol regulation. This liver-spleen connection is important because hepatitis (liver inflammation) is one of the complications of measles. On the other hand, the measles rash is considered normal in the progression of this infection. The rash is likely caused by spleen inflammation.

Also worth noting is the fact that acute pancreatitis is something that often occurs in patients with measles. But the spleen has stem cells called splenocytes that can differentiate into pancreatic islets and ductal epithelial cells to rescue the pancreas and regrow insulin-producing cells naturally after infection with measles.

Herbs like Arctium lappa (and others) that function as “blood-purifying herbs” likely work their magic mostly through the spleen. This is a theory because the spleen is not a well-studied organ in the body, but our research seems to indicate that this is the case.

Vitamin A to Prevent Measles without Vaccine

Vitamin A deficiency is a known risk factor that can lead to measles infection in children and adults. The World Health Organization recommends that patients with measles are given an oral dose of 200,000 IU (or 100,000 IU in infants) of vitamin A daily for two days if vitamin A deficiency is suspected. When children with measles who also have a vitamin A deficiency are given high doses of vitamin A for two days, there was a 47% reduction in croup, but no significant reduction in the incidence of pneumonia or diarrhea. However, when diarrhea developed in measles, the vitamin A reduced its duration. One study showed that the incidence of ear infection due to measles was reduced by 74% with the administration of vitamin A.

Water-based formulations of vitamin A reduced the risk of mortality by 81% in comparison with a reduction in mortality of 48% in patients given two doses of oil-based vitamin A. Two doses of water and oil-based vitamin A, on the other hand, as associated with an 82% reduction in the risk of mortality in children under 2 years of age. The use of water and oil-based formulations was also associated with a 67% reduced risk of pneumonia-specific deaths.

Severe vitamin A deficiency during a measles infection can lead to permanent blindness in children.

While 1 dose of vitamin A after measles symptoms begin was not associated with a reduced mortality, 2 doses of vitamin A significantly reduced mortality in measles patients. The effect of reducing the mortality due to measles through vitamin A supplementation was greatest in children under 2 years of age.

Vitamin C: Treat Measles at Home

Vitamin C is a nutrient that’s essential for proper immune system function. When a child gets low on vitamin C, they become vulnerable to infection. Vitamin C promotes all of the following immune system activities:

  • Production of Neutrophils
  • Phagocytic ability of Neutrophils
  • Production of Phagocytes
  • Phagocytic ability of Phagocytes
  • Production of Lymphocytes
  • Leukocyte generation of hydrogen peroxide that destroys pathogens
  • Increased antibody production (IgG and IgM)
  • Increased C1 esterase (a component of the immune complement system)

When a child is under stress or if a child is exposed to a disease-causing microorganisms such as the measles virus, their vitamin C levels drop as the body uses this nutrient to fight the infection. Vitamin C is a precursor to the production of collagen, a substance that is necessary in organ and tissue repair and growth. During a measles infection, a child without adequate vitamin C is at a higher risk of developing complications.

Studies have shown that supplementing with 5000 mg per day of vitamin C (in adults) doubles the lymphocyte production in the body. Administering 10,000 mg tripled the production of lymphocytes. Administering 18,000 mg quadrupled the production of lymphocytes.

Vitamin C protects the body from sepsis by improving the structure of blood vessels and by regulating the release of histamine. Supplementing with high doses of this nutrient during a viral illness such as measles helps to prevent secondary infection. A number of famous scientists including Linus Pauling and Thomas Levy noted that the vitamin may inactivate viruses by promoting the production of reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide. In other words, at high doses (not at low doses), vitamin C works through a similar mechanism of action as Chlorine Dioxide Solution (see below).

Thomas Levy produced reports on the use of vitamin C to treat and cure serious diseases such as:

  • Measles
  • Polio
  • Hepatitis
  • Tetanus
  • Mumps
  • Viral Encephalitis
  • Influenza
  • Herpes
  • Streptococcus
  • Staphylococcus

It's Just! - Vitamin C Powder, 100% Pure Ascorbic Acid, Food Grade, Immune Support, Homemade Cosmetics (11oz)

Vitamin C has also been able to improve diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV / AIDs.

Vitamin C not only acts in the body to improve the immune system response, increase reactive oxygen species production (to kill viruses and other pathogens), but it also has the ability to neutralize and get rid of many toxins including toxins produced by the pathogen itself.

Vitamin C can be administered intravenously at a dose ranging from 350-1200 mg per kilogram of body weight to treat measles naturally at home.

2X DMSO 99.9% Pharma Grade Ingredients | Low Odor - Dimethyl sulfoxide Liquid | 2X 3.4 Oz - 2X 100 ml | High Purity | Set of Two | Heiltropfen®

Dr. Frederick R Klenner used vitamin C to treat and cure polio using frequent injections of vitamin C and a measure of fever to guide his dosing.  He was able to cure all 60 of his patients of polio by administering a dose of 6-12 grams of vitamin C per day, usually over the course of 3 days (72 hours). After the first dose of vitamin C, he administered the same dose every 2 hours until the patient’s temperature dropped. Then he slowly increased the intervals between doses over the following days of treatment. If a patient relapsed, he began to administer vitamin C treatments again at longer intervals until their symptoms went away. Dr. Klenner used variations on this strategy to cure other viral diseases such as measles. He found that patients typically responded favorably to vitamin C treatment within just a couple of hours when it was given at doses between 10-18 grams per day. Dr. Klenner emphasized the importance of keeping tissue saturation levels of vitamin C high throughout the administration process in order to cure measles naturally (and other viral illnesses).

Of course, not everyone is in a position to be able to safely do injections of vitamin C when their child becomes ill with measles. On the other hand though, some people may be able to obtain dimethyl sulfoxide and mix vitamin C with this medicinal agent to apply vitamin C to the skin for absorption. The dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) makes the vitamin C absorbable through the skin. Vitamin C cannot usually be administered in high doses as an oral medicine. Most people can only absorb up to about 6000 mg of vitamin C per day via the digestive system. The use of vitamin C mixed with DMSO makes it possible for a person to apply this nutrient to the skin for absorption without having to inject it to achieve high doses and sustain them as a natural treatment for measles.

Chlorine Dioxide Solution for Measles

Note that the use of vitamin C therapy for measles can cancel out chlorine dioxide solution treatment for measles. Do not use these two types of therapy together. Choose one or the other. Chlorine Dioxide Solution is more fragile as a treatment, but it may be easier for some parents to obtain chlorine dioxide solution than DMSO to do vitamin C therapy for measles.

Studies have shown that chlorine dioxide solution is an effective natural antiviral for measles. Chlorine dioxide can be safely administered in babies and young children. Herbal Remedy for Measles: Arctium lappa

Arctium lappa is an herbal remedy for measles that can be safely used in children at a dose of up to 250 mg/kg of body weight. Higher doses may also sometimes be appropriate, but this is the dose that has been scientifically established as safe and unlikely to produce any side effects.

Arctium lappa contains vitamin A which may explain, at least some of its medicinal action as a natural treatment for measles at home. This herb is also a powerful blood purifier that decongests the lymphatic system and that acts to protect the liver and kidneys as well. As such, we known that Arctium lappa provides nutrients that treat measles, but this is also an herb that detoxifies the body. By removing toxins more quickly from the body, there is less mucus congestion.

Herbal Remedy for Measles: Woad / Isatis indigotica

Woad has been used as a primary food source during famine which means that it is likely safe in children who are old enough to eat adult food. It may also be safe to use it in younger children. Like Arctium lappa, this herb is high in nutrients, which lends credibility to the idea that certain nutrient deficiencies contribute to  viral infection. Note that Isatis indigotica can potentiate the effects of other medicines and herbs.

Quassia Amara: Topical Herbal Treatment for Measles

All parts of the Quassia amara plant contain the bitter known as quassimarin. This particular medicinal substance has the following effects:

  • Antileukemic
  • Anti-tumor (it functions to cure cancer)
  • Astringent
  • Digestive
  • Febrifuge (can be used to lower fever naturally)
  • Laxative
  • Tonic
  • Vermifuge (antiparasitic)

This herb stimulates the secretion of gastric juices to improve digestion. A tea made from Quassia amara leaves are used to bathe the skin of children with measles. A decoction of the inner bark of the Quassia amara plant though, can be used to treat respiratory infection and fever. The stem and the bark have medicinal healing action in the spleen, liver, and kidneys.

Some practitioners have administered 20 mg Quassine (one of the medicinal substances found in Quassia amara) to children as young as 8 years of age.

In children younger than 8 years of age, administer Quassia amara as a homeopathic remedy.

Red Raspberry Leaf: Herbal Remedy for Measles

A cold infusion of red raspberry leaf has an antidiarrheal effect. Red raspberry, when prepared as an herbal tea for measles, has astringent qualities that not only help prevent diarrhea, but that can also help alleviate the measles rash to some extent. Red raspberry leaf tea can reduce a fever in children and it can also be used as an eyewash to naturally treat conjunctivitis due to measles.

As an herbal eyewash for measles conjunctivitis, the eyes can be bathed as often as possible with an herbal tea that is sufficiently cooled.

Red raspberry leaf cleanses the mucus membranes, which can help prevent the development of pneumonia in children with measles. Red raspberry leaf is a nutritional tea that contains nutrients that likely help prevent and treat this infection. Red raspberry leaf thins mucus secretions to allow the body to more easily remove viruses and decongest the lungs. It is for this reason that this herb is valuable as an herbal remedy for influenza in children as well as a treatment for the common cold and other respiratory infections.

This herb is powerfully antiviral and should be administered as ⅛ to ¼ cup in babies and young children and ½ cup in children aged 5-10 years old. In children over 10 years, administer ½-1 cup per day. Divide the total dose and administer it in 3-4 divided doses throughout the day.

Pueraria thomsonii and Pueraria lobata: Herbal Remedy for Measles

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the dried slices of Pueraria thomsonii, also known as Gan Ge Teng is boiled in hot water to make a decoction as an Asian remedy for measles. Pueraria lobata is a related plant that is also known as Kudzu. Kudzu can also be used as an herbal treatment for measles. The decoction is made using 10-15 grams of dried Pueraria thomsonii. This is the dose administered to adults who are being treated by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners.

Pueraria lobata, a plant that is related to Pueraria thomsonii, has been studied for its antiviral ability against a number of diseases including human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This is a viral disease that affects people of all ages causing health complications that are similar to measles. RSV, like measles is a disease that’s transmitted through the air as a respiratory infection. While the medication ribariin is often prescribed to treat RSV, it has only a modest effect against this infection. Results from studies into the use of Pueraria lobata as an herbal remedy for RSV have shown that this herb can be used as a water extract (such as a tea) to prevent RSV-induced plaque formation. Pueraria lobata was able to prevent RSV infection after exposure by inhibiting virus attachment and penetration of cells.

In addition to acting as an herbal antiviral against RSV and measles, Pueraria lobata has also demonstrated significant antiviral effects against Enterovirus, a pathogen that causes brain swelling (encephalitis) and a high mortality rate. Once again, a water extract of Pueraria lobata was used to inhibit the cytopathology caused by infection with Enterovirus. As with RSV infection, the Pueraria lobata water extract inhibited viral attachment and penetration into the cell. Studies have shown that Pueraria lobata can be given as a prophylaxis to prevent Enterovirus infection after exposure, but it can also be given after infection to reduce viral infectivity.

Given the studies into other viral infections that are treatable using Pueraria lobata and Pueraria thomsonii, it is likely that these plants work as an herbal antiviral for measles by inhibiting viral attachment and penetration of healthy human cells.

Both Pueraria thomsonii and Pueraria lobata have an excellent safety profile. The lethal dose (the lowest dose that can cause death) is above a dose of 5000 mg / kilogram of body weight in both male and female rats. The oral dose that produced no adverse effects was also greater than 5000 mg / kilogram of body weight, which is a massive dose.

Note that the Pueraria plants should not be administered to patients who are taking methotrexate.

Thymus Extract: Cure for Meningitis and Encephalitis due to Measles

A case study of four children with measles meningoencephalitis demonstrated the value of calf thymus extract. All four of the children in the study were in a coma when the study began. Three out of the four children had a good and rapid clinical improvement with the use of thymus extract. In the three children who recovered, there were no neurological problems noted even after 1-4 years follow-up. Depression of the cell-mediated immunity was normalized by the end of therapy in the patients.

Dessicated calf thymus extract, of course, could be administered to children to prevent measles naturally. It can also be administered to treat measles naturally at home. Children do not have to have complications from measles to warrant the use of calf thymus extract to strengthen the immune system against this viral infection.
